The Diamondbacks are attempting to trade veteran infielder Aaron Hill, Jon Heyman tweets. Earlier this week, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported that the Diamondbacks were looking to trade a second baseman, potentially clearing space for the team to sign free agent Howie Kendrick. The D-backs have other second basemen who might be more attractive in a trade, like Chris Owings and Brandon Drury, but it appears Hill is the one they’re looking to deal.
Of course, as Heyman points out, trading Hill won’t be easy. For one thing, the middle infield market is still relatively robust, with Kendrick, Ian Desmond, Jimmy Rollins and others still available. Also, Hill is owed $12MM in 2016 and is coming off two straight poor seasons at the plate. He batted .230/.295/.345 in 2015, a line that was bad but not markedly worse than his 2014 performance. And while defensive metrics once marked him as a plus second baseman, they’ve downgraded him to average or slightly below average in recent seasons.
Hill would appear, then, to have no trade value due to his age (33), performance and salary. The Diamondbacks and Reds previously discussed a trade involving Hill and Brandon Phillips. That deal didn’t work out, but it fits the basic form a Hill trade would likely take — the D-backs would likely have to take on another expensive player in return, or at least pay much of Hill’s remaining salary. Of course, if their ultimate goal were to sign Kendrick (which is unclear, since Kendrick declined a qualifying offer and Arizona has previously expressed a strong desire to keep their top remaining draft pick), the Diamondbacks might instead seek a high-salaried veteran who played a position outside the middle infield.
Of course, the Diamondbacks could clear roster space and avoid the headache of trying to trade Hill’s contract by dealing Owings, but Owings plays a decent defensive shortstop and would therefore be more useful in a utility role if the Diamondbacks were to sign Kendrick or another infielder. Hill has not played shortstop since 2006 and spent last season at second base and third, so his tactical value to the Diamondbacks is limited, particularly given that they already have a variety of infield options.

All other GMs should get on the horn immediately. Stewart might include Pollack or Goldy to move Hill… maybe both. Lol.
Binnster
Your an idiot
Brixton
The only way hes getting moved is if he does another Arroyo deal.
Hill and Cody Reed for Hector Neris? I don’t exactly know the D’Backs needs, but the Phillies certainly can give out money in exchange for talent.
Matt Galvin
Bullpen and maybe 3B/C.
Brixton
Don’t they have Lamb (1.9 WAR in 107 games) and Castillo (.813 OPS in 80 games)?
prestigeworldwide
Backup Catcher is what they could use. Tuffy is coming off a acl tear and Herrmann is well Herrmann. O’brien has an outside chance if he can learn how to throw the ball back to the pitcher.
Maybe they move Hill with Delgado or Anderson plus the Comp A pick they will lose if they add Desmond or Kendrick. Dbacks can just say the hell with the first day of the 2016 draft..
Philliesfan4life
what would it take for the angels to make a trade for hill?
rmullig2
Tony Reagins being rehired as GM.
Halo27
LOL!!!….Oh God nooooooo! Vernon Wells. 🙁
shiftyeyedgoat
Honestly, I think the Angels could look to see if they want to take on CJ Wilson; as another virtually untradeable contract, they could essentially swap and be done with it.
CJ offers more WAR upside as a SP than Hill who’s regressed defensively and is almost nonexistent offensively, but CJ is paid 8mil/year more. Seems like it would fill the hole at 2B for the Angels, and allow for the Dbacks to slot their youngsters with impunity.
Get on it FOs.
SoCalShu
Why the f would you want Hill??? Forget cost….He is a downgrade from Johnny G…

Would be a good add for the Pirates to use while Kang recovers. Especially if Pirates can get a prospect out of Arizona or get most of that salary paid!
lemieuxkarl66
I agree. Heck yeah.
Throw them Holdzkom and Max Moroff.
Pirates take on 4-5Mil of Hill’s final year.
4-5Mil might seem like an overpay, but as bad as Hill is as a starter,
he’d be a pretty safe backup as far as defense goes.
Hopefully Kang is fine after only 2-3 weeks into the season.
lemieuxkarl66
Hill’s experience at 2B & 3B is perfect for what the Pirates need to bridge the gap until Kang returns,
Harrison at 3B, Hill at 2B
Kang at 3B, Harrison at 2B, with Hill on the bench.
Seems like Pirates MGMT has some confidence in Alen Hanson,
Either that or they weirdly like Sean Rodriguez for some reason.
I say Hill’s a way better option than S-Rod.
Backatitagain
Braves could trade Nick Swisher or Michael Bourn for Aaron Hill.
Brixton
How does that benefit either team?
Backatitagain
Snakes get rid of Hill as they desire to do and get a backup OF/1B Switch hitter they can use. Braves take on bad contract band save $3Million, but…
OnlyRaysFan
I think they wish to clear up money too….trading for Swisher or Bourn would not be a smart idea.
hanks1hammer
It would free up 2b so they can pick up Kendrick..that’s it. I can’t imagine Stewart would agree to THAT though. Taking on both Swisher and Bourne is way to much. Maybe take one either Swisher or Bourne and balance the money out so that the Braves get a small salary dump out of it seems more reasonable
Phillies2017
I agree with the Arroyo type deal. That’s what’s going to happen but I think Marcus Wilson is the piece moved.
SupremeZeus
Throw in Isan Diaz and we have a deal.
Backatitagain
Check That, Braves could trade Nick Swisher and $9 million for Aaron Hill and either Alex Young, LHP or $9 Million to be paid back in 2017.
dano 2
Braves fan and not thrilled by dreams of Hill. Would love to dump swisher and bourn but you know John Hart would want a prospect. Preferably a one time high draft pick pitcher coming off Tommy John. If Alex Young fits that bill, you may be spot on.
hanks1hammer
Hmm..is that what the Braves got when they acquired Sean Newcombe? Or did they get a highly skilled, top 20 MLB prospect? What about when Copi/Hart picked up Touki Tousant, Aaron Blaire or Danby Swanson?
The TJ refrain is an old, tired one that demonstrates you have simply not paid much attention to the rebuilding effort.
restinpeacebraves
Dear “hanks1hammer”:
Oh, I’ve been paying plenty of attention to the rebuilding effort. Outside of the Miller trade, which was an embarrassment for the D-Backs, the Braves dump of affordable, young players who were locked up through 2017 was downright disgraceful and an insult to any Braves fan.
So if you want to sit their with your little pom-poms and cheer on a cheap ownership group while crossing your fingers the Braves become good in two-three years, go for it. But don’t accuse anyone of not paying attention. That just makes you sound smug, and you probably are.
baseballfan2
Comparing stats Aaron Hill is still better than Rollins & Desmond over the past three years. Hill was also told he to play 3rd base, somewhere he had not played in over 10 years so having to re-learn that position & being told he would be a bench player when he prepared in the off season to be a full time second baseman. The Dbacks need a veteran player who will work with the young guys and Hill fits that role.Yes I know $12million for a bench player is a lot but worth it to have a quality team player who understands his role better this year. I think Aaron Hill can rebound to have a good if not great year since he has had time to adjust to the new role the Dbacks made him take. Besides is Kendrick or Owings going to sit on the bench or another young guy & be productive?
A'sfaninUK
Hill has -1.5 fWAR over his last 249 games, can’t see AZ moving him without adding a top prospect to balance out the deal.
bigkempin
Bad contract for bad contract never requires a top prospect
brandonmarin
Phillies, Padres, Royals, braves are really the only 3 teams that could use hill. I don’t see it happening
brandonmarin
Braves, Phillies, Padres, Royals are the teams that i see that can use hill on their roster.
A'sfaninUK
I don’t understand why the Angels haven’t re-signed Kendrick yet. Such an obvious fit.
bigkempin
Arte Moreno. That’s why
seamaholic 2
If they wouldn’t go over the lux tax for Gordon, Heyward, Cespedes, or Upton, why on Earth would they do it for Howie Kendrick?
2B isn’t their problem anyway. Giovatella is fine, league average last year. They need a corner outfielder and that’s pretty much it.
SoCalShu
Zactly….seems like a lot of times some of these fans just want to make trades regardless if it helps the team…I think Johnny G will show a lot of improvement over last year. All Star/GG no way but will be better on both sides after a full-ish season of consistent playing time last season.
Diablo 2
Halos need to trade but not for aging players, they need minor league depth+quality, Wilson and Santiago should be traded for that, because when Angels get hurt man does the team suffer since theirs no one of quality to take over the position. As for Johnny we will see. Offensively Johnny doesn’t really concern me, its his defense. His defense was atrocious, up until the last two weeks of the season. He couldn’t turn double plays, make routine plays, no range, no arm. It cost the Angels so many runs and a games. I hope he has been working really hard on defense and improved all of that to be major league average.
hanks1hammer
I don’t think you will get a lot for Wilson. This is his last year of control and he is going to make $20 million this year. Maybe if he has a really strong first half and the Angels are not contending. Santiago might actually fetch some pretty nice pieces but again, only if the Angels aren’t contending.
It has to be tough. The Angels don’t have the farm to bring any kind of hope for the Angels future. The pitching is especially concerning which is why it might be a bad idea to trade Santiago and presently as the team is constructed, its difficult to believe they will win the division. It might be in the Angels best interest to rebuild while they still have some talent on the roster and punt on the year.
Diablo 2
Because Howie is worth a pick. I’m hoping Howie goes unsigned until June, Cj has a great April, Angels trade Cj for a LF and sign Howie in June since the compensation pick will be gone.
restinpeacebraves
I’m sure the Braves would love to take Hill (along with two of the D-Backs best prospects). Arizona is Atlanta’s favorite trade partner.
TJECK109
If the D-backs were picking up a large portion of the salary I could see the Pirates possibly taking a chance on him. Never know how Kang will be when he returns. Rather them make a deal if the other team is desperate than when everyone knows they may be desperate
scottaz
First, D’backs don’t need or want Kendrick, and won’t give up another draft pick. The 3 areas of real need are: 1) a fourth outfielder; 2) a backup catcher; and 3) a closer/back of the bullpen pitcher. They have a bad (not terrible, just bad) contract for a second baseman in Hill. They would like to reallocate his $12M salary to another position in a trade. I can’t think of an ideal bad/not terrible contract in any of those categories (I regard Swisher and Bourn’s contracts as terrible). The only two examples I can think of are both starting pitchers–C.J. Wilson and Matt Garza. Both would require cash back to the D’backs to make them palatable.
disgruntledreader 2
Both Wilson and Garza, if healthy, can be league average in 2016. Hill could put up the lowest value in the league. That’s not a recipe for money going back to the DBacks.
darenh
I see a potential trade partner in the Brewers.
Hill could platoon with Scooter at 2B and be a utility IF off the bench.
In return, the Brewers have several bullpen and cheap 4OF options who might interest the D’Backs.
The Brewers are projected to have a payroll around $59 million after shedding all those vets, so they could easily take back the salary. What’s the price for saving $10-$11m in payroll? Jose Herrera? Brad Keller?
daveinmp
Brewers traded to get Jonathon Villar to compete at 3B and do some platooning at 2B. Villar is out of options and almost assured of a roster spot on opening day. They also took 2B Colin Walsh in rule 5 draft, and have several other backup infield options who’ll be in Arizona. I doubt they have any interest in Hill unless Arizona would take Garza off their hands.
Baseball on Earth
Honestly, I’m shocked that Kendrick is not drawing much attention from other teams. He was the most consistent hitter for the Dodgers last year, and his defense is not as bad as numbers indicate. Not to mention his solid presence as a veteran in the clubhouse. Many Dodger fans would agree with what I said.
dbacksfan2001
The reason nobody has signed Kendrick yet is because he’s tied to a draft pick. No one especially the Diamondbacks don’t wanna give up anymore draft picks. They have lost their last 3 years first round picks.
hojostache
The QO is holding back Kendrick. Decent player, but that’s a lot to give up for 1-2yr. do ppl think he’ll get 3 or more yrs?
gtownfan
Rangers need to jump on this.
Andrus, Tolleson, Scheppers, Jurado and Rua for Bradley, O’Brien, Alcantara and Hill.
texasbug
The Astros could use Aaron Hill as their third baseman in 2016.
OnlyRaysFan
Hill is worse than Valbuena. Why would they want Hill.
