Jeter won’t be unanimous because he played in the steroid era and some voter will use that against him.
Mark 21
You gonna say the same thing for every player who is HOF eligible for the next 15 years tho. At what point do you just stop talking about PEDS?
chri
That’s true because there are some voters who assume everyone who played in the steroid era is guilty.
Tbh, I think Bonds and Clemens should be in because their talent is second to none and the fact is, that most of their competition cheated also.

Jeter won’t be unanimous because he’s not better than a majority of players already in the HOF that weren’t. The voting process is not ideal to say the least. And oh yeah, Jeter is still shockingly overrated.
RunDMC
If I could upvote this, I would. I love Jeter (and live in the cocoon of NYC), but Jeter is incredibly overrated. I would like to think there’s a few voters that pay attention to his career numbers against many others. If Griffey Jr. has 3 dissenters, Jeter will have at least a few more.
chri
Agreed. Never won an MVP, only a career .817 OPS, terrible defense at shortstop.
He benefits from playing in NY when they were in the midst of q dynasty. Still a hall of famer, but Jeter isn’t even the best player of his era

The argument is and has never been Jeter vs EVERY other HOF player in existence, You can say the same for Ozzie Smith. The argument is Jeter vs every other SS in the HOF.
Jeter is obviously an offense first SS.(he did have 8 seasons w/ a positive ratings tho).
I went to fangraphs and filtered out all SS since 1900 w/ at least 2,500 plate appearances (roughly 5 full seasons). Jeter ranked top 7 in HRS, RUNS, RBI, AVG, HITS (#1), Dbls, and BB. He was 11th in OBP and 13th in SB.
Scale that search down to the last 50 years (since 1965) instead of the last 115 and Jeter ranks top 5 with Ripken and Arod in about ever offensive category.
Also, the fact that he did it with class and w/o the shadow of PEDs it wouldn’t shock me if he was unanimous.

That was worded awkwardly. Meant it’s NOT Jeter vs all other HOF’s but Jeter vs every other SS in the game. My bad.
bravesfan88
I’ve always wondered what his career would have been like on a different team…Jeter’s that is
vmmercan 2
Would have moved off of SS much earlier and probably been a better defender. Would still have over 3K hits. Probably more SBs, less HR.

Read the Gattis article. Do yourself a favor
RunDMC
Yeah interesting article. I would never have thought Gattis would have 11 triples. Interesting that 7 of his 11 are at home, where he benefits from hitting rockets off the wall that get away from fielders and/or the now-defunct CF hill. I can only imagine how many triples he’d have if he played 80 games at Fenway.

Rivera will be first unanimous!
redking
Disagree
hanks1hammer
Ken Griffey Jr wasn’t, Gregg Maddux wasn’t.. neither will Rivera
nyy42
Neither of those guys are close to Rivera

Yankee fan maybe?
lukeski4
What makes you think that? Defintley a Boston fan.

I’m a Yankees fan. I love Derek Jeter. To say he could be unanimous is insane. I know this is an old argument, but if he was playing for the Oakland A’s he would of been Mike Bordick.
vmmercan 2
You credit him being on the Yankees to playing in another 1,000 games and having another 1900 hits, 170 HR, a .50 higher OBP and 250 more SBs? I get the lower average and OBP to a degree if he played the majority of his career in Oakland but Bordick was signed as an amateur FA and made his MLB debut at 24. Jeter was a sixth overall pick and played his first full season at 22 and hit .314/.370/.800. They both played about what their expectations were, which was nowhere similar in ability and production.

I think Chipper Jones has a shot at a unanimous HOF vote. It’s not that he’s the greatest player ever, but he is like Griffey in the sense that nobody questions he’s worthy of the HOF and that he’s almost universally liked. I think they need to stop using the percentages as measuring stick of greatness and voting in Jones unanimously would help abolish this silly practice.

I had Gattis in my Home Run and RBI fantasy league. I lost the RBI title by 1, if a couple of
those triples would have been HR’s I would have won it. I blame circumstances not him though, he served me well, as he qualified as my catcher.
mike156
Jeter won’t be unanimous. I’d be surprised if he gets over 90%. He is overrated, but he also clearly belongs in the Hall of Fame. He’s right in the middle of JAWS ratings for shortstops in the HOF, and JAWS doesn’t spend time overrating players because they play in New York or are good looking or date supermodels. Jeter’s biggest handicap may very well be that he was never “feared”. But, for a guy that was really overrated and not feared, here’s his post season line in 158 games: 734 PA, 111R, 200 H, 32 2B, 5 3B, 20 HRs, 61 RBI, 302 TB, 18 steals in 23 attempts, and .308/.374/.465. What a dog.
