The Angels have announced a trade to acquire corner infielder Jefry Marte from the Tigers in exchange for second baseman Kody Eaves. Marte had been designated for assignment to clear roster space for the signing of Justin Upton.
To create a 40-man spot, Los Angeles designated infielder Ronald Torreyes for assignment, MLB.com’s Alden Gonzalez tweets. The 23-year-old had only just been claimed off waivers. He’s bounced around quite a bit of late and could be destined for another team unless he clears this time.
Marte, 24, debuted last year for Detroit, slashing .213/.284/.413 with four home runs in 90 plate appearances. Marte cracked the Baseball Prospectus top 100 prospects list before the 2009 season, but his development took some time. After a middling 2014 campaign at Double-A, he put up strong results in 2015 at the Triple-A level. In 399 plate appearances there, he carried a .275/.341/.487 batting line and swatted 25 long balls.
Meanwhile, the 22-year-old Eaves reached the High-A level last year, putting up a .248/.308/.387 slash in his 575 plate appearances. He also stole 21 bases on the year. Eaves was a 16th round pick in the 2012 draft.

Ronald Torreyes might be chasing some sort of record soon for most teams in one offseason

I’m mildly interested in Marte’s bat… definitely more excited about it than Torreyes haha.

There needs be a stop put to the type of thing that Torreyes is going through. Every off season it seems that there is a couple of players that change hands 5-6 times and it really isn’t fair to continually jerk around a player like that, even if it is just on paper. There needs to be some kind of required time period for a player to remain on a 40 man roster before he can be DFA’d again, perhaps 60 days in the off season and 30 days during the season.

I’m a Torreyes guy from back when, but he’s okay. He’s not flying city to city. He’ll be in someone’s spring camp, though possibly off the roster. Which is the goal. Teams want to be the team that keeps Torreyes, or Edgar Olmos, off the 40 Man.
I guess if you have a CBA-style improvement the players ans 23 of the owners would like, I’d like to hear it.
wilymo
yeah, this is probably a bit of a whirlwind for him psychologically, but, he doesn’t have to actually *do* anything. he’s just sitting at his house

And it shows that teams think he has talent and they want him in their organization. That he is too low on the depth chart to stay on the 40-man is just the way things go for a guy on the edge. I would be motivated by all the interest. Just gotta keep working Ronald

And, no, I don’t think the owners have any reason to tie the hands of their execs like that. Nor does the union want to surrender something over Ronald Torreyes.
The goal is to add talent. Every single day.

“Nor does the union want to surrender something over Ronald Torreyes.” Then why should he have to remain in the union? If it doesn’t care about guys like him, then why bother with a union at all?
The goal is not to add talent, the goal is to build the best team possible for the 2016 season and beyond. If Ronald Torreyes was part of that plan two days ago, then how is he not today? This is all about circumventing the existing process and trying to steal a player. I am all for players having opportunities at major league jobs and if you can’t get a 40 man spot with your original team, then you deserve a chance at a 40 man spot with another team. That is not what this is. This is a cheap tactic to build minor league depth at the expense of the player and the original team. The Blue Jays use to do it all the time and the Dodgers did it last year with relievers. Execs need to have their hands tied with the 40 man roster. This is not fantasy baseball, these are real lives that are being messed with.

So you would have preferred Torreyes never made a 2nd 40 man roster at all? Because that’s what will happen to marginal players if you set up your desired regulatory regime. Law of unintended consequences.
And how does that benefit the player? No other team would be willing to pick him up, so he goes to the minors probably never to get another chance at the bigs. Then he’s bagging groceries in Topeka 5 years from now.
Is that really having the best interests of the player in mind?
Ray Ray
Not what I was saying at all. I am saying that if you claim him off waivers, then you should have to keep him on the 40 man for a set period of time. How does keeping him on the 40 man for 2 days and sending to a different minor league system benefit the player? As of right now, if no one claims him, then he is still going to the minors except this time it is through the Angels minor league system. So it appears he still on his way to Topeka to bag groceries.
To answer your final question, it is not just about the best interests of the player. You have to find a medium between the best interests of the player, the best interests of the original team, the best interest of the claiming team, and the best interests of the game. The problem is that most people only look at these problems from the point of view of the player, because that is usually the more relatable side.

Geez poor Torreyes.

Looks like Ronald is pulling a Will Ferrell. I hope he gets acquired by every team this year, even in the KBO.

Can’t help but feel bad for torreyes.

Torreyes will latch on with someone…….he’s still a youngster.
