DECEMBER 18: It does not sound as if there has been much movement on Gallardo’s market over the last few days. The Astros and Orioles are still the “most aggressive” pursuers, per Jon Morosi of FOX Sports (Twitter links), but Baltimore, at least, doesn’t even have an offer out to the righty at present.
DECEMBER 14: The Royals have joined the Astros and Orioles with interest in free agent righty Yovani Gallardo, SB Nation’s Chris Cotillo reports on Twitter. The report suggests that Gallardo could choose from among that trio of clubs before long.
Entering his age-30 campaign, Gallardo no longer looks like a top-of-the-rotation hurler but has been solid and durable. His arm has been injury-free in the majors and he has not dropped below 184 innings in any of the last seven seasons. Gallardo has also averaged a sub-3.50 ERA over the past two seasons, with strong groundball tendencies making up somewhat for declining strikeouts, though ERA estimators have not supported those results.
The veteran right-hander seems to fit the mold of starter that Kansas City has pursued in recent offseasons. Though he’ll probably be more expensive (and is arguably a better pitcher) than recent signees like Edinson Volquez, Jason Vargas, and Jeremy Guthrie, all of those players had also delivered fairly consistent innings heading into their open-market year.
Kansas City has already re-signed Chris Young and is said to be bringing in Dillon Gee as another option, so there isn’t quite as much urgency to add to the staff as there was when the winter started. But some of the current rotation options, such as Kris Medlen and Danny Duffy, spent time in the pen last year and probably haven’t locked down jobs for 2016. And building out depth never hurts, as was made evident last year when Young filled in admirably as Yordano Ventura struggled and Vargas went down to Tommy John surgery.

Why not just resign Chen and save a draft pick?
mehs
It doesn’t matter one way or the other. If they sign Gallardo and Chen signs elsewhere they will have the same number of picks as with signing Chen.
brandonmarin
It changes the draft order though. If they sign Chen then they will have the 15th pick next year. If they sign gallardo they will lose their 15th pick and instead gain a 32-40 pick when Chen signs elsewhere.
Lance
if the draft in ANY sport were an exact science, I would agree you don’t want to lose 17-25 spots. but it’s not. it’s just a guessing game. 24 teams passed on Mike Trout. If they think Galladro is better than Chen….go after Galladro.
Lefty_Orioles_Fan
SMH, what are the Orioles doing?
The fans certainly are not clamoring for Gallardo.
Plus, to give Texas a draft pick….Absolutely not!!
Duquette is once again wandering around looking for what exactly? I just don’t know.
beauvandertulip
Give me the draft pick plz.
aprogie
will you please stop with these long trade ideas…. ITS NEVER GONNA HAPPEN. EVER. its a waste of time.

I think getting Gallardo on a 2-3 deal would t be a bad idea for KC, he showed last year he is capable of pitching in the AL and the KC coaches have a way with pitchers, and I think they would be okay sacrificing the draft pick because of how young they are already and if they wanna win now adding him could definitely help them
gorav114
I think the Os are a great fit. His strong groundball numbers with the best infield defense in the league especially if Davis returns. He instantly fills the void left by Chen as a strong 3 with 2 potential. I get he is a righty and they need a lefty but he fits the bill as a good pitcher and they need good pitchers. I don’t like giving up the pick but they will still have four in the top 100. I’d rather have a quality player than a scratch off.
Lefty_Orioles_Fan
Yes, but Gallardo is not our biggest need.
If the Orioles do not get their act together in the outfield, it’s going to be a long summer of 2016. If our Outfield smells like low tide in the Chesapeake, what good would signing Gallarado be?
gorav114
I agree with that. Trumbo at least helps a lot. If they can resign Davis they are a better team than last year with Gallardo.
Voice of Reason
Wow, maybe suggest they trade teams?

The best way to win this competition is to let someone else sign him. I love Gallardo, I truly do. Unfortunately he’s not much more than an innings eater. That has value, but even that is in rapid decline.
knolln
ya he’s a starts eater, not an innings eater. 6.0 innings was the most he pitched after June, and he managed that 3 times. he’s got to be perfect with diminished stuff, and it is not fun to watch. i was scared he’d accept a QO.
Lance
agreed knoll. Yovani had that great run with something like 32 scoreless innings in June. but overall he was very frustrating and there’s a reason why Texas has decided not to re-sign a home town boy. Frankly, I felt the Rangers should have gone after two ex-Ranger pitchers last year who signed with KC and did well: Chris Young (another DFW boy) and Edison Volquez. But, JD did pretty darn good last year.
drewm
True. He stays healthy and makes a lot of starts, but he doesn’t pitch a lot of innings. He nibbles the edges and misses a lot and it drives up his pitch count.
jlivers77
That’s like Clayton Kershaw for Eli Whiteside.

I like Gallardo to the Royals or Orioles, as both need cheaper (meaning not top level) innings eaters, but here’s something to consider: Gallardo to St. Louis. While I think Mike Leake may be a better fit, Gallardo works for a lot of the same reasons. Both are basically shoe ins for 200 innings, both are very durable, and both have spent the bulk of their careers in the NL Central. Both guys know the ballparks and the teams. While Gallardo won’t be as expensive as Leake (probably), he will cost you a draft pick. In my opinion, Cardinals need at least one of these guys, and it comes down to whether they value the draft pick more or the money more. I think they value the draft pick more and will end up with Leake or another pitcher that is not attached to a draft pick.
jimmyjack
I’m not challenging you, but Gallardo is far from a lock for 200 innings these days. As a Ranger fan who watches too many games, it was annoying to watch him now that the K rate is so low. Maybe now that he KNOWS he’s no longer a K pitcher he can learn to pitch to contact better, and therefore keep his pitch count down. But last season he just couldn’t put anybody away. He started 33 games and went past 6.0 innings only 5 times. Only one of those times was in the second half.
Maybe moving back to NL and facing the pitcher a couple times a game will help him, but I’d hate to count on that. He seems like a good dude and I’m glad that he got to pitch in his home area, but it was frustrating to watch.
jimmyjack
And it’s not like I’m spoiled by watching good pitchers every night. Our starting pitchers in 2015 were your every day household names: Chi Chi Gonzalez, Wandy Rodriguez, Nick Martinez, Colby “The Cobra” Lewis, Martin Perez, Derek Holland, Gallardo, and finally Hamels. There may have been another one sprinkled in there, but the only one more annoying than Gallardo to watch was Holland, and that’s because we’ve always had high hopes for Holland.
Lance
Yeah…..the dutch oven is very frustrating because he has shown the ability to be dominating. but his inconsistency drives fans crazy. he’s such a nice guy and EZ to like….you WANT him to succeed! amazing how JD and Banister didn’t give up on the team and how they won the west!
beauvandertulip
This is literally the stupidest trade idea I’ve ever heard. The braves are trying to get better, not worse. The Indians are about 2 years away from a complete overhaul of management and rebuild.
skip 2
Really you have to much time on your hands. How do you even remotely come up with trades like this….
vtadave
Good one. I would however add Bradley Zimmer from the Indians side and then the Braves would include Sean Newcomb and Dansby Swanson.
RyanR
He may do good for the Orioles. Gallardos typically good against the Blue Jays.
Lance
fwiw…..Gallardo pitched well in his only start at Camden…..6 innings, 2 hits, 0 runs…3 walks.
bradthebluefish
4.00 FIP, 1.400 WHIP, decrease in velocity, and less than 200 innings each season in the past three years? I’d pass.
doctorstrangeglove
Ever heard the phrase “less is more?” Lol
Seriously though. It’s not that you don’t think of teams that might be a match in your monster proposals; some of these teams match up ok. It’s not that these monster sized trades never happen; they sometimes do.
But these sizes of trades are already very rare, and you somehow find a way to propose a whole bunch of them.
We all like to rosterbate. Maybe just dial these packages down a bit.
