The Padres, Angels and Dodgers are showing the most interest in second baseman Chase Utley, reports ESPN’s Jayson Stark. Utley has told friends that his preference is to play in his native California, Stark hears, adding that the Los Angeles area native now resides in northern California but still has family in the southern portion of the state.
Some believe that the Padres’ interest could be a precursor to a trade of some kind, Stark writes, as the team has internal second base options in the form of Jedd Gyorko and Jose Pirela. (Additionally, I’d list Cory Spangenberg, Yangervis Solarte and recently acquired Carlos Asuaje in that mix.) Given the depth of options the Padres have at second, the Utley connection is perhaps a bit surprising, but Stark nonetheless characterizes the team’s interest as “strong.”
The Angels, he notes, could look to use Utley both at second base and designated hitter next season depending on matchups. Johnny Giavotella manned second for most of the 2015 season in Anaheim while batting .272/.318/.375 and delivering suspect defense. Of course, Utley himself is coming off a mere .212/.286/.343 batting line between the Phillies and Dodgers. And, at 37 (later this month), it might not be wise to count on plus defense from the veteran, though metrics like Ultimate Zone Rating and Defensive Runs Saved pegged him as only slightly below average and much preferred his work to that of the younger Giavotella.
Stark writes that the Dodgers could use Utley as a short-term stopgap to prospect Jose Peraza — a former Top 100 prospect with the Braves that debuted with the Dodgers in 2015 but received just 25 plate appearances in the Majors. Peraza has considerable speed, but his combined .293/.316/.378 line between the Triple-A affiliates for L.A. and Atlanta wasn’t as impressive as his work at the lower levels in the minors. Then again, he’s also still just 21 years of age, making him significantly younger than the bulk of his competition in Triple-A.
Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports tweets that the Dodgers have more interest in Utley than they do in Ben Zobrist, which would seem to mesh with the notion that a short-term bridge to Peraza is the preferred route for the team. An outside addition isn’t necessarily needed at all, thanks to the presence of Enrique Hernandez, although adding Utley in a stopgap capacity would allow the Dodgers to continue leveraging Hernandez’s versatility in somewhat of a super-utility capacity.
mcdusty31
They need to give Peraza a chance with Kike as insurance…if they are able to trade an outfielder, signing Utley would make some sense but they need to see if Peraza is a long term option at 2B or not…sure would be nice to still have Dee at they keystone and setting the table as the lead off hitter
socalbum
Utley to the Angels makes the most sense as he can DH as well as play 2b, 3b, and 1b.
raysfaninboston
I don’t know why teams are even that interested in Utley. He’s been on a pretty obvious decline since 2010, and I doubt he’s going to turn that around at 37. I’d rather sign a cheap young player that could put up the same production, but with some actual potential to either improve or at least contribute for more than 1 year.
gopads
being healthy all offseason going into spring perhaps he plays better – regardless a guy like that can help mold a team, player(s)
BlueSkyLA
Teams in need of a short-term solution at the position don’t have a lot of free agent options. The Dodgers would probably not be interested in Utley had they not traded for Peraza.
Baseballfan83 2
The Dodgers are interested in him and why would they not block Peraza the same way the did Seager?
bigkempin
Seager was “blocked” by a 1 year stopgap in Jimmy Rollins….
BlueSkyLA
IOW, exactly the same deal.
gopads
Rollins, another guy who could end up in SD… Dodgers have so much talent
bigkempin
Teams won’t be signing Utley and expecting 600 AB’s with a .280 avg. He’ll come cheap on a 1 year deal or 1+a team option for a team looking for a stop gap. He’ll provide leadership for the young guys and he still runs the bases adequately. And as far as the obvious decline since 2010….2011/2012 he batted right around .260 with 11 HR’s each season. he hit .284/.348/.475 with 18 HR’s in 2013, and .270/.339/.407 with 11 HR’s in 2014. All of those seasons put him above league average for 2B. They all also ended with an OPS+ above league average.

exactly & for cheap money this guy is nothing but upside

I would rather the Angels bring back Kendrick than sign Utley
socalbum
I agree, but Kendrick will be very expensive in comparison
dx4life
The Angels have no one near ready to play 2nd in the minors. Dipoto traded him to the Padres for Gott and Street. Utley has not played 80 games in a single season in 5 years. He hit 212 last season. He is below average defensively. Other than not giving up a draft pick. Kendrick hands down is the better player.

I believe it was Taylor Lindsey who went to the Padres and was the closest the Angels had to a replacement at 2B until Giavotella surprised them. They don’t have anyone left in the minors to take over 2B; however, Giavotella can still man the position for them. They can sign a number of stop gaps and just create a platoon situation there with a deeper bench. I think Utley would just be plugged into that, and not necessarily be counted on as the solution.
MikeTroutForMayor
Is Taylor still with the Padres? I remember that he was designated for assignment last summer.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
Yes. Lindsey is not eligible for minor league free agency for another year. He’s not going to get added back to the 40 unless he starts hitting again.
dx4life
Giavotella is a nice player. But his offense doesn’t make up for his defense. The Angels already signed a utility infielder. Utly would be riding the bench. If they want to add a left handed bat to play the infield, sign Murphy. Let him play third.
ryanw-2
Also, Utley has played way more than 80 games a season over the last 5 years. He played in 155 in 2014 and only one season of less than 100 since about 2005.
gopads
Pads could use another left handed bat at first base but Wallace could be a guy like that, so Utley at 2nd or 3rd is possible but with Solarte, Spangy, Gyorko, Amarista plus 2 or 3 guys in the minors it’s hard to imagine he comes to SD without Preller making a trade or 2 – i am all for Utley’s clubhouse presence, know how, experience and the fact he could help mold some young guys, this team…not to mention Utley could come back hitting lasers in April
petcopadre
I’m not really for the Pads signing Utley. What does he bring? The Pads are not going to contend this year, so it makes no sense to take away playing time from a younger player. Clubhouse presence is over rated, IMO.
Baseballfan83 2
And what good is the clubhouse presence of a guy that has been voted most dirty player by other players multiple times. Just want the Tejada slide that is his entire career.
gopads
the guy is a leader, young guys especially learn from him
zippytms
Couldn’t agree more. Where would Utley fit? He’s a 2B who’s filled in at 1B on occasion. He’s been on a steady decline for five years with injuries and age. Last year his bat was not useful, and his age is showing with the glove.
2B: Jedd Gyorko is the incumbent unless they want to play him at SS again, which is unlikely Spangenberg, Solarte, and Amarista are returning depth, and now the 40-man also has Jose Pirela. Two or three of them need to leave the roster before thinking about adding another 2B, and I don’t think Utley is an upgrade here at this point in his career.
1B: Wil Myers has stated that his preferred position is 1B. Brett Wallace may be a useful platoon option and plays steady defense there. Derek Norris might share time there as well.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
Wallace is a questionable defender at all positions and Norris struggled with playing 1st base in 2015. It seems likely that Wil Myers gets the everyday 1st base job in 2016. At least until he gets injured again.
gopads
gotta be some trades in the mix for some of the Padres middle infielder depth if Utley is signed, Wallace is their ph left handed bat with power, cant xpect last years production but his confidence should be on the uptick
bbatardo
Not sure why the Padres are interested.. at this point I’d rather have Spangenburg or Gyorko play 2B.
SixFlagsMagicPadres
Indeed, it is strange considering they have depth there. It’s like Preller is The Riddler of baseball.
Bringbacktheblue
I give up. I don’t know what the hell AJ Preller is doing.
Baseballfan83 2
Don’t worry neither does he. Enjoy watching more Gyrko at SS
SixFlagsMagicPadres
And Amarista still playing at the major league level.
tac3
Do the Mets not have any interest in Utley? 🙂
aztecmike
I might lose it if Utley comes to San Diego. Sure, we already have a progressing, left handed hitting second baseman in Spangenberg, in addition to Gyorko on the infield. But no, lets divert attention away from the glaring holes at SS, SP and LF, and chase (no pun intended) after a regressing 36-37 year old 2B who had a less than stellar 2015 campaign. Why block Spangy’s growth? Why invest in a position where there’s ACTUALLY some depth?
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
Tis the Padre way. Just like two offseasons ago when Josh Byrnes spent the entire offseason looking to upgrade what was arguably already the best bullpen in baseball instead of upgrading a weak offense that went on to be the worst offense in like 75 years.
gopads
here’s to hoping Rockstars decisions work to a playoff birth
aztecmike
I don’t foresee playoffs for some time now. DBacks have Pollock and Goldy in the field, and just fortified their rotation with arguably the best pitcher in baseball last season. The Giants retooled with Shark, who will, IMO, be very good at AT&T. The Dodgers, though they lost their number one target and in house pitcher, will probably overpay to land Cueto, cutting their losses and still being a big playoff contender.
Our current field looks like this:
C Norris/Hedges
1B Myers/Wallace
2B Spangenberg/Gyorko
3B Solarte/Wallace
SS Amarista/Gyorko
LF Dickerson/Liriano
CF Upton Jr/Jankowski
RF Kemp/Liriano
And our rotation/pen:
Shields, Ross, Cashner, Rea and either OD or Erlin, with a pen of Edwards, Pomeranz, Vincent, Mateo, Vargas, Quack and Maurer.
It’s not pitiful, but it’s certainly not going to help us contend in 2016, unfortunately.
