2:54pm: Industry expectation is that O’Day will secure a four-year deal that comes in a bit shy of Andrew Miller’s $36MM pact, Crasnick now tweets, suggesting something in the range of $32-34MM.
DEC. 3, 1:59pm: Baltimore has been making contact with alternative free agent relievers, reports Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com (Twitter links), who suggests that could be an indication that the team “might not be optimistic” about its chances of re-signing O’Day. Meanwhile, the Nats, Dodgers, and Braves remain in the hunt, per the report, which notes that the veteran would like to continue pitching on the east coast.
DEC. 1: The Orioles have made a “competitive” bid for free agent reliever Darren O’Day, Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun reports. Baltimore appears to be one of the final teams under consideration for the veteran, though numerous others — the Nationals, Braves, Dodgers, and perhaps more — could still be involved, per the report.
While a signing timeline remains uncertain, O’Day has seen plenty of action over the early weeks of the offseason. He could reach an agreement before the Winter Meetings open on Monday, Connolly suggests.
The O’s have been in touch with O’Day’s representatives for some time, so the interest itself isn’t new. But Connolly writes that this is the team’s first formal offer to the late-inning ace. And its apparent competitiveness also seemingly suggests that the team is more serious about retaining O’Day than had perhaps been expected.
O’Day is the top-ranked reliever on the free agent market, per MLBTR’s Tim Dierkes. While he’s entering his age-33 campaign, O’Day’s sub-2.00 ERA over the last four seasons makes him an obvious target for many teams looking at pen upgrades.

Some days, I loved O’Day.
Other days, I wanted to run him out of town.
Either way, I am fine with it.
vtadave
You’d know better than I would as an O’s fan, but his worst month was August – 2.53 ERA. Speaking of wanting guys run out of town, I had to watch the Dodgers bullpen all year.
Lefty_Orioles_Fan
He had a couple of blown saves.
He also got into a few bases loaded situations which drove me up the wall.
One he got out of the other he didn’t.
Look some people love him, I am just not in that category.
TD272
He’s been one of our most consistent relievers for some time – definitely not conventional but very effective. We can’t afford to lose him.
eggy
I’m an o’s fan also and it didn’t really annoy me because after he loaded the bases he struck out the side
lookouts
Oh, Lefty, really?
Lefty_Orioles_Fan
Yes really, lookouts.
Also, unlike some O’s types, I won’t be shedding any tears if he leaves and goes somewhere else.
dlevin11
I had to watch Red Sox bullpen all year what a mess that was.
nickblubaugh
and I had to watch the Braves bullpen all year
gorav114
I am fine with it if the cost becomes excessive but not if the Nats get him for 4/24 or something. It seemed like a few times this year he loaded the bases then struck out side or strikeout double play. He also had a few inopportune dingers. Seems like a great clubhouse guy but relievers to me are very over rated. There are failed starters everywhere looking to give it everything for an inning or two 60 times a year for 800k a year. Rather have 8-9 million towards Leake or Cueto
Lefty_Orioles_Fan
Well, it sounds like you will get over it too
If we got Cueto that would ease the pain of losing O’Day for sure.
rstang4
O’Day has been a great late inning guy and would love to keep him around.
Eric D.
Why arent the Red Sox in the bidding for this guy? They need more guys than just Kimbrel!
dmazcomp
Welcome to Dave Dombrowski’s world. As a Tigers fan, it got to be predictable to see Dave pay for a closer, but shop in the budget aisle for the rest. With the exception of signing Joaquin Benoit, middle relievers were largely ignored and the bullpen was filled with fodder. I like Dombrowski and hated to see him leave, but he has not proven to be good at building a bullpen.
R.D.
You think he’d learn seeing as that was the tigers downfall every competitive year
onlyringsmatter
Red Sox are not Tigers buddy
redsfanman
Yes please, Orioles. Take Darren O’Day off the free agent market. You (the Orioles) never matched up well for an Aroldis Chapman trade, so like the previous move by the Tigers to acquire KRod, removing another closer from the market would be extremely welcome.
Out of several realistic initial Chapman suitors only the Red Sox are out of the market. Darren O’Day could remove another suitor, but instead he might go to Baltimore. Huzzah!
gorav114
But he’s not a closer. The Orioles wouldn’t pursue a trade for Chapman because while he is a top 3 closer they already have a top 5 closer. I don’t think either would agree to be a set up guy. Chapman is not worth what all Cincy fans seem to think. He’s a me first guy that will be a free agent after season. If Cincy thinks they are getting a package close to what SD got they better expect to hold onto him for the year. His highest value will be at trade deadline but even then it will be less quantity then what Kimbrel brought.
aff10
I agree that Chapman is being overvalued, but I think he was hoping for Baltimore to sign O’Day because they have Britton. It would mean that any team looking at O’Day as a potential closer (maybe Washington?)would still need a closer and could look at Chapman
gorav114
Yea good point, had read it different. I would love the Os to sign Oday and trade for Chapman, haha. Oday, Chapman, Britton sounds real nice.
lookouts
Keep in mind that there is talk of Britton moving back to the rotation. Chapman would be a nice replacement.
bucknerforhall
this is all posturing – Balt will lose Oday, Chen, & Davis
and they know it -they just want fan base to think they are trying.
O’day is at 4 years $8.5 mil per year – Balt is not going there with all the holes they have
TD272
Agreed – if he goes that high they will (and should) let him walk. Is that around what Miler got from the Yankees last year? Hoping they might be able to keep him for less.
gorav114
Yup, if they were willing to pay that they would have paid it for Miller and kept him.
Matty The Jays Fan
I hope he stays with the Orioles so Bautista can continue to light him up.
Rollie's Mustache
I just hope O’Day stays in the AL East to see more of Jose Bautista. The feud must live on.
slider32
I think the Nats make the best offer to O’Day. This would give them the option to get rid of Papelbon.
smelliott00
I think it is kind of interesting to see the Braves in there, but the more I think about it the more I like it. Aiming to be competitive by 2017 -the opening of their new ballpark- and needing back end help, O’Day and Atlanta could be a fit. If Coppolella and Hart can pitch the idea of staying close to home and pitching in a brand new park, maybe he will suffer through the semi-rough 2016, which I don’t even think will be that bad a year for them
Chrish815
First off no one take papelbon . The only team that would take papelbon last season was nats. Second storen will get traded and when it come O’Day I get why team are going ape for this guy he is guy who has been up and down his hole career and way relieves in general aren’t coincident every year and guy is in his 30’s chance are in 2 to three years team will be trying to get out of the contract . I could see guy who maybe was in mid 20’s that had some good years and showing up side but chance are O’Day won’t be getting any better and you will see decline in value . All you stat geeks need stop being prisoners of the moment. National have more problems with there team just bull pin they just lost best pitcher in Zimmerman . Worth is getting old and has season his best seasons and still getting payed hole lot for few more years Zimmerman is on decline also and with history of his injuries . Rendon has only shown 1 good year no center field (taylor does empress me ) there banking on 2 year( rookie) to play short that not even talking about the cancer that is pap. I like dusty but he can’t make every go away . ( I’m not nats fan but if I was them I make trade with Padres trade strausburg Escobar Ramos storen and see if take werth for Ross upton Gyoko Rzepczyinski , Vincent and Norris this would help both teams . When I see O’Day I still see Red Sox coming in sign him or going back to O’s
vamosbravos
When I just read just the headline, I thought to myself, why the hell wouldn’t the O’s be interested in resigning him? Because while this be be a newsflash to some on here, this cat O’Day is a really good pitcher. So teaming up with Britton for yet another season would only help the O’s move on up in the AL East. However, upon reading the article (if even remotely true) I really would love the Braves to take a serious shot at him & I hope they do, as well.
bird knows
C’mon Mr Angelos. Put up the money and resign O’Day. He is an important part of the Orioles bullpen
bucknerforhall
they likely just spent $9 mil on Trumbo & $15+ on Weiters – My guess would be they have like $15 mil left to spend ? Would be hard to give 1/2 of that to O’Day. I think he goes to the Nats then they trade Storen to fill holes.
gorav114
Darren, u have been a great reliever for the Os and don’t u wanna see winning a championship with this team through? Accept the 3 years and stay where u are already in a great position. Thanks.
Joe McMahon
The O’s are the 5th best team in that division with the worst farm system as well. O’Day would not see a championship with that team if he resigned with them. He’d see a lot of 3rd-5th place finishes but no championships.
iamhector24
Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha
bravesred 2
If Braves are gonna spend that much on a RP, they should have kept Kimbrel.
mike156
that’s an amazing amount of money. If that’s what the market will bear, why not, but we are talking about a set-up man–a very good one–but a setup man.
Joe McMahon
It’s really not that much money. In the current market, $8M a year is very reasonable. Even for a reliever.
start_wearing_purple
Well, the last couple of years in the postseason has emphasized what all of us already knew, a solid bullpen in a major key to postseason success. A good enough bullpen means you’re more likely to win in close games. So it’s not surprising we’re starting to see high quality 8th inning pitchers getting more money.
donteatgoats
i cant tell you how many times Darren came into a tie game with no outs and the bases loaded and gave up NOTHING. he will be a HUGE loss if we dont resign him
mj-2
Lol at the braves being in this. No chance.
Gardner_012
This guy has been up and down? He’s had one poor season and that was 2011, two of you count his rookie year, with a career era of 2.31 this guy is a lights out reliever, absolutely shuts down the other team, when your posting a sub 1.50 era your dominant I don’t care what anyone says this guys unreal, I think he needs to stay in Baltimore but who knows if they can even afford him, the braves could use him but would probably want him to be a closer and I think he’s a better set up man, the Dodgers could really use him because of the dumpster fire that has been there bullpen in the past, the fact that Boston isn’t looking at him doesn’t shock me because donbrowski, and Washington needs him as well as bullpen is a big hole, not the only hole they need to fill but Oday sure would ease the pain that is watching the Nationals bullpen pitch, this guy is the best option for any teams bullpen needs right now and the only teams that make sense would be kid Angeles or Boston and I don’t see either team getting him
andrewc62
When Arizona loses out on Chapman when the Reds drag their feet in trading him, he’ll become a D-Back
