The domestic violence allegations against closer Aroldis Chapman will likely make it very difficult for the Reds to trade him, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale writes. Police records indicate that, in late October, Chapman allegedly choked his girlfriend, shoved her against a wall and fired eight gunshots in his garage. The allegations appear to have derailed the Reds’ trade of Chapman to the Dodgers. “I know we can’t touch him. Our owner would never go for that. And I’m getting the sense from other teams that they feel the same way,” one NL executive says. “Yeah, we know talent can cover up some character flaws, but domestic violence is such a hot topic now.” Spurred by cases involving Ray Rice and others in the NFL, domestic violence has become a high-profile issue in sports, and a team trading for Chapman would likely now be opening itself to a barrage of criticism. It doesn’t look like MLB’s investigation into Chapman’s situation will be resolved quickly, either. Nightengale notes that Chapman’s situation could lead to changes in the way MLB teams announce player acquisitions, potentially including language about completing background checks as well as physicals. Here are more notes from the NL Central.
- The Cubs have maintained steady contact with Jason Heyward’s representation, FOX Sports’ Jon Morosi tweets. It’s uncertain, however, whether they’ll continue to have interest after agreeing to terms with Ben Zobrist. Heyward has lately been connected to the Giants, Angels and Cardinals.
- One possibility for the Cardinals if they can’t re-sign Heyward is to sign Alex Gordon for less, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports suggests (Twitter links). With the savings, they could then pursue NPB starter Kenta Maeda. Gordon could play right field in 2016, then move to left if the Cardinals decline Matt Holliday’s option for the following season.
- The Pirates are interested in re-signing Sean Rodriguez, Travis Sawchik of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review tweets. Rodriguez batted a modest .246/.281/.362 with the Bucs in 2015 but helped with his versatility, playing competent defense while splitting his time between first and the corner outfield positions (and also occasionally helping elsewhere in the infield).
- The Bucs are exploring a variety of possibilities at first base, writes MLB.com’s Adam Berry. Specifically, Berry writes that the Pirates have expressed interest in Mike Napoli, although the right-handed Napoli seems like a slightly awkward fit given the presence of the right-handed Michael Morse on the Bucs’ roster. After non-tendering Pedro Alvarez, the Pirates are looking for a new first baseman to form a bridge to top prospect Josh Bell.

If the Cubs could still get heyward that would be perfect on so many levels. My guess is we will probably have to move hammel’s contract in a similar move we made with starlin Castro, but I would be up for that if the result is heyward patrolling center until almora is ready and then moving to right, making soler expendable for young pitching
megaj
I know this might sound insane, but who is more expendable Soler or Schwarber? I know Schwarber can absolutely destroy the baseball, but he is a defensive liability just about everywhere you would put him in the OF, Soler seems to be the type of guy that can provide adequate defense while putting up a decent average of .280 and 20+ HR a year.. I really hope that Schwarber has a strong year for the Cubs so that they can trade him for an ace pitcher or premium catcher after next season. I love his thunderous bat, but defense and pitching is what wins championships.
amishthunderak
No. Schwarber isn’t going anywhere.
Larry D.
True fact. Please stop with the Schwarber trade rumors.
Desertbull
Soler is the better all around player with more upside. Schwarber should be a DH / back up catcher.
bmcc5411
I agree completely with that statement but soler has shown injury problems, inconsistency with the bat, and most importantly in my mind, he has shown he doesn’t even care about fielding. At least schwarber shows that he wants to improve in the field and I think that’s the most important part for any player defensively
thebare54
Come July Scwhaber will be the Cubs catcher with Wilson Contrevas from Iowa

It is absolutely ridiculous to compare the Chapman case to the Ray Rice case. Rice punched his fiance in the face, knocked her out cold, and dragged her out of an elevator on tape. Thus far we believe that Chapman put his hands on his girlfriend’s neck without obstructing her breathing and fired a gun against a wall without hurting anyone. That’s like saying a speeding ticket is the same as a hit and run because they both occur in a car. Yes they are both against the law and you shouldn’t do either, but one is MUCH worse than the other.
megaj
If he fired a gun at his wall while in a fit of anger, then he needs help mentally and should never touch a firearm again.
charliewilmoth
Neither I nor Nightengale were directly comparing the two situations, only explaining why domestic violence among professional athletes is such a sensitive issue right now.
Ray Ray
Fair enough, but mentioning the Rice case in the same story just informs the reader that the two cases are similar. Perhaps I am reading too much into it, but it just didn’t pass the smell test to me.
amishthunderak
He didn’t obstruct her breathing? Oh, thats ok then.
Ray Ray
It’s a lot better than the opposite, is it not?
Dave 32
Sorry, there are no degrees of better with domestic violence.
At all.
This is not a debatable thing, This just means that he got caught doing a thing that didn’t end up with someone in the hospital or dead, not that it’s okay that nobody died or got seriously hurt.
At minimum he should be in jail, and out of baseball. There’s no way this sort of thing stops as long as people stop treating it as if it’s not serious just as long as someone else has done worse.

The only real difference between this and Ray Rice is Rice was caught on camera. The difference between one man beating his wife and another slapping around his wife is semantics. Both men are abusive jerks who deserve punishment.
Philliesfan4life
same as greg hardy
Ray Ray
Where did you read anything about Chapman “slapping around his wife?” It was his girlfriend and there was no slapping at all according to everything I have read about it. You are just wanting to string up another celebrity because the media is telling you. This lynch mob mentality that infects the net is really getting old.
Toksoon
He fired his gun 8 times, don’t understand why he’s not in jail, they have
A10-20-life law here that goes with using or brandishing a gun in the commission of a crime gets you an automatic 10 years you get an automatic 20 if you fire it and life if you shoot someone, another case of a pro athlete being above the law
nick 20
That is going to be the question. Assuming the report is true and he did choke his gf where did he do it? If he choked her say in the upstairs of his house and then fired the gun in the garage that the domestic dispute was over when he walked away to the garage is what his lawyers would probably say.. If he didn’t pull the gun out in her presence and threaten her with it,, and if she wasn’t around when he fired it in the garage then I am not sure the 10-20-life law applies. It could be argued the domestic violence had already ended at that point. We will find out though.
Ray Ray
Well since they decided there was no reason to arrest him, I’m betting he doesn’t get jail time. Could he get a suspension from MLB? Yes. Does he deserve it? Arguable in both directions. Yes he did something wrong, but he apparently didn’t break any laws. And before any of you quote laws, I’m pretty sure the policemen that handled the case know the laws better than you and they decided he didn’t break them. This is just a overreaction to the Rice case and rolling over for mob rule. Innocent until proven guilty is just a myth.
megaj
If the Cubs sign Heyward, they will have one of the best lineups in the history of baseball. The only problem is who would be the leadoff hitter in this lineup: I wouldn’t doubt if Kris Bryant would wind up with 140 RBI if this were the case.
CF J. Heyward -15+ HR, .360+OBP
2B B. Zobrist -15+ HR .350+OBP
1B A. Rizzo -30+ HR .380 OBP
3B K. Bryant -30+ HR .360+ OBP
LF K Schwarber -25+HR
RF J. Soler – 25+ HR
SS A Russell -15+ HR
C M Montero -15+HR
What to do with Baez? He is too talented to leave on the bench. If the Cubs don’t get Heyward and don’t trade Baez,, then the lineup is still great if Baez can learn CF.
amishthunderak
Best lineup ever? I’m a Cubs fan, but that is ridiculous.
And by the way, watch out for the sophomore slump from some of the youngsters.
megaj
Well, maybe an exaggeration but given their age and capability who knows.. Even Russell can turn into a beast offensively with the next couple of years, he is only like 21 years old. I guess an upgrade at catcher and then I would reiterate my statement…I will make a bet that this team hits over 200 home runs next year and lead the majors in runs scored even if they don’t get Heyward.
Connorsoxfan
Maybe lineup with the most potential ever. Love what Theo has done there. Wish the Sox suffered one more year of Cherington and begged Theo to come back on whatever terms he could possibly dream of. I know it’s unrealistic, but I’m a wistfully thinking BoSox fan… It’s my job!
mattsmattedin
LOL.
Rick 18
Megaj – that lineup is close but under Madden it be more like:
Heyward
Rizzo
Bryant
Schwarber
Soler
Zobrist
Montero
SP
Russell
And Baez would come off the bench. Which is fine right now. Madden would be able to rest guys like Bryant, Schwarber, Soler at times moving Zobrist from 2B and putting in Baez to play 2B. Heyward is the missing link. Question is can they pull it off. Gordon is nice but not CF.
amishthunderak
Get over the Heyward thing. He’s a good player, but I feel like there are more strategic ways to spend $200 million.
megaj
Which sophomore slump do you think is going to happen? I think Bryant is way better than he played last season, Baez is going to be better, Soler showed sign of dramatic improvement towards the end of the season, and Schwarber hasn’t really played a full season yet. So who is having the slump? The only player on the Cubs staff that I see falling off the shelf a bit is Arietta who probably will never have another year like that, I actually think Lester will pitch better this year as well.
mattsmattedin
Arrieta (substantially), Soler, Bryant.
PLAYTOWIN
Heyward is over rated. Good defense. Modest power. Not worth $159 million .
Cachhubguy
Ray, Ray,
The article I read said he choked her and threw her against the wall. He also fired 8 shots. Do you think this could escalate next time? If it was your sister would you be so quick to defend the abuser?
joew
I’m still really confused all the push for “first base”. If the Pirates feel Bell is the answer in ’17 at the latest then just stick with Morse and if they resign S-Rod great there is your backup.
Morse doesn’t need a platoon bat. Lefties/Righties do not matter to him. If he returns to form like she showed signs of at the end of last season then there is no need to sign Napoli for 5+million. (probably closer to 10)
What the Pirates really need is pitching.
