The Mets are “pretty optimistic” of landing free agent infielder/outfielder Ben Zobrist, Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com tweets. New York expects a decision today or tomorrow, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports (Twitter links). While the team has yet to formally offer a fourth year, says Sherman, it would work out a fourth year if Zobrist indicates he’d like to join the club.
Here are some more updates on the market for infielders:
- The Orioles are meeting today with agent Scott Boras regarding free agent first baseman Chris Davis, Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com reports on Twitter. As Kubatko notes, Boras also represents Pedro Alvarez, who could theoretically also represent an option for Baltimore — at least if the team misses on Davis.
- Brewers first baseman Adam Lind appears to have a broad potential market, with Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel tweeting that at least 12 clubs have “checked in” on him.
- One such team is the Orioles, per Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (via Twitter), who says that Baltimore has inquired on both Lind and Mitch Moreland of the Rangers. But the O’s don’t appear to “match up” with Milwaukee on Lind, Haudricourt adds via Twitter.
- There’s no realistic possibility of an extension between Neil Walker and the Pirates, Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports. GM Neal Huntington says that he feels the team has sufficient internal options — and acquisition possibilities — to “back-fill if Walker is dealt.
- The Pirates’ talks with the Rangers on Moreland have “cooled” but are still alive, Biertempfel further reports.
- Though there’s continuing interest, the Angels don’t appear likely to land Howie Kendrick in free agency, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports. The veteran second baseman is probably going to be too expensive given the team’s other needs, per Fletcher.
- The Angels could look to the Diamondbacks’ stockpile of young infielders to fill one of the club’s potential openings, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times suggests. Los Angeles could offer starting pitching in return.
- Free agent backstop Tyler Flowers is reportedly deciding between the Yankees, Braves, and Rays, per MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch (Twitter links). He’d potentially serve as Brian McCann’s backup in New York, says Hoch. That could, in theory at least, make fellow backstops Gary Sanchez and Austin Romine available to utilize in a trade. MLB.com’s Mark Bowman reported on the Braves interest this morning via Twitter, saying that the club is considering Flowers in an effort to avoid over-exposing free agent addition A.J. Pierzynski. If Flowers goes to Atlanta, it would immediately raise yet more questions about the future of young receiver Christian Bethancourt.
- Free agent slugger Mark Reynolds is drawing interest from the Rockies, Cardinals, Giants, and Pirates, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com tweets.
- Among the teams with interest in Japanese third baseman Nobuhiro Matsuda are the White Sox and Padres, Heyman adds on Twitter.

I would like to see the Brewers trade Lind for Bundy!
mstrchef13
Al Bundy? The O’s just got Trumbo. They aren’t going to give up anything of significance for a LH Trumbo with injury problems, let alone someone with Bundy’s potential.
joew
Mark Reynolds.. pass. He still has some power but has averaged less than 20HR the past four seasons in ~1900 PA with a 29.6% strike out rate… but with a pretty decent 11.3% walk rate.
If he is cheaper than what Hart was last year then… okay but not much more

I would like to see Lind with the “birds on the bat”. Now that we have Gyorko make a trade w/ the Brew Crew that centers around Wong, then add M. Adams and a few prospects. Just a thought “Mo”
JT19
Lol what? You want to give up Wong, Adams and prospects for a platoon LH bat? This is why you wouldn’t be a GM.

There is no need for Ben Zobrist to rush into a free agent deal this week. With so many teams showing interest in the versatile veteran his value will remain high throughout the offseason and may actually improve when some teams finalize decisions regarding players that might currently be hindering their attempts to acquire him.
The Cubs are one such team that would figure to be high on Zobrist’s wish list. Once they determine possible destinations for either Starlin Castro or Javier Baez, the opportunity for Zobrist to play 2B regularly (his offseason preference) may open up for him.
Zobrist would undoubtedly relish a chance to reunite with former manager Joe Maddon and finish his career with a serious World Series contender. The Eureka, Illinois native would also remain closer to his Franklin, Tennessee residence than some other locations, including N.Y or any out West.
The Cubs would benefit from having a switch-hitting, high OBP and low strike-out top of the order veteran presence in their young lineup. Maddon would love his versatility afield, even should the 2B position open up for Zobrist to play regularly. Maddon has never been bashfull about moving his players around in the course of a ball game with his micro-managing, especially now that he is in the National League. How many times did starting 3B Kris Bryant wound up in the outfield last season, or vice versa? LF Chris Coghlan often played 2 or 3 different positions during the course of a ball game, Ditto for Javier Baez, Starlin Castro, Kyle Schwarber and even Addison Russell. Zobrist is more than capable of doing the same for the Cubs with his ability to play as many as 7 different field positions proficiently.
I see Zobrist as a great match for the Cubs…and the Cubs as an excellent destination for Zobrist. He has an opportunity to finish his fine MLB career with the manager he started with, one who was instrumental in recognizing and trusting his versatility in the batting order and afield, who helped Zobrist become the valuable and winning player he is today.

The longer he waits hoping the Cubs come calling, the lower his price drops as other teams fill the hole. Nice nostalgia story but in terms of money, there’s no reason for him to do that.

I’m guessing the Cardinals were interested in Reynolds before they traded for Gyorko. I can’t see a fit now.

Huntington is an idiot. He has been anti-Walker from his first day, and his continued demeaning of Walker has certainly (filled in the blank) me off.
JT19
For what? Not trying to resign Walker? Resign Walker and then they don’t have the money to at least try to resign McCutchen and/or Cole.
joew
I agree.. Huntington is not anti-Walker. everyone in the organization loves Walker and the sides talked extensions repeatedly. He is a decent player with good club house appeal, home town connections and his family connection to Clemente.. EVERYONE wants him back..
I, probably one of the biggest people advocating Walker’s trade; want him back.
But the reality is.. dollar signs. Walker is worth more than he is being paid right now so to extend him 3 or 4 years will cost 60-75 million and he is probably on the down side of his prime and the pirates have a drop in replacement for him now (only with less power) but the new 3rd basemen can make up for that (once healthy)
If they don’t trade him they can extend him a qualifying offer (probably about 16million) and he will probably take it or work out a 2 or 3 year deal. If he does leave then the pirates get an extra draft pick.
oh and almost no way Cole extends. I hope he does but probably not. If Cole was a free agent now he’d be looking at 25M/year easy and he is a Boras client 🙁

Don’t see the Giants interest in signing Reynolds unless they were trading Belt. Seems like they’d find better and cheaper options for 1B in that scenario. Reynolds would bring power off the bench but the Giants usually like more versatile players as backups.

Has there been any confirmed sightings of Mo at the winter meetings? I’m convinced that he is on vacation and not doing anything to improve the Cardinals.

I see Lind going to the M’s or O’s as he would be a significant upgrade over anything they have.
