1:12pm: The Mariners and Red Sox are making progress on a trade that would send Miley to Seattle, Rosenthal now tweets.
11:41am: The Mariners and Red Sox are in trade talks centering around one of Boston’s starters, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (Twitter link). It’s not clear precisely which player is being targeted, according to Rosenthal, but it’s believed to be either Clay Buchholz or Wade Miley, he adds.
Dipoto is familiar with both pitchers to varying degrees after his recent stint as a senior adviser in the Red Sox front office. However, his ties with Miley date back to his days with the Diamondbacks; Dipoto was Arizona’s interim GM in 2010 and was the club’s director of scouting when Miley was drafted in 2008, so it stands to reason that he sees a good deal of things to like in Miley’s arm.
The Mariners are known to be eyeing rotation upgrades — Dipoto has said as much — but recently lost out on their top target, right-hander Hisashi Iwakuma, who agreed to a three-year deal worth a reported $45MM in guaranteed money. Dipoto has been far and away the most active GM on the trade market this winter, so it’s hardly a surprise to see him further linked to upgrading his roster in that fashion.
Miley, 29, is guaranteed a total of $15.25MM over the next two seasons and has a $12MM club option for the 2018 season on his contract, making him a highly affordable option. Buchholz, too, is reasonably affordable, as he’s owed $13MM for the 2016 campaign. He’s controllable through 2017 via a club option.

Buchholz could have a career resurgence in Seattle, that would be a good pickup
marinersblue96
I would be ok with Buchholtz as long as we don’t have to give up anything significant. Miley would not be a upgrade over anyone currently on the staff.
jr428
Miley would be a good back-end of the rotation starter though. I’d be fine with Buchholtz, but he has a bit of an injury history, but if healthy, he and Felix could be a better tandem than even Felix and Iwakuma were.
jrwhite21
What would be too significant for you to give up? I’m not as familiar with the Mariners farm system as I am with the Red Sox. What would you suggest giving up?
onlyringsmatter
knowing Red Sox you won’t get Clay for nothing. You would have him for 2 years at 13 mil plus when healthy his numbers are ace like or number 2 at worst
marinersblue96
Too much would be Paxton or Elias as pitching goes position players I would hate to give up on Taylor or DJ Petersen.
Clay has the team option for 2017, but his recent history doesn’t suggest he will be healthy enough for that to be warranted.
jrwhite21
Miley plus one of Owens/Johnson for Carson Smith?
John Murray
Owens was the top lefty starting prospect in baseball as late as two years ago. To get him AND Miley – you’re talking either Paxton or Elias.
jrwhite21
I was never high on Owens so that was probably largely based on personal bias. But he still only projects as a 4/5 starter, maybe a 3 is his ceiling. There’s also a lot of lefties in the Sox upper minors and ERod by far has the highest potential.
marinersblue96
Carson while spotty(lefties rough him up) has the stuff of a future closer. That would seem to be fair value though, Miley just doesn’t seem much of an upgrade over what is already on staff.
jrwhite21
I can’t think of much else Boston would want. I feel Carson would make a good fit in the setup roll to Koji and Taz some rest.
mattyice13
That doesn’t make sense. Sox just traded for Kimbrel. And Owens/Johnson would be part of a much bigger trade to get an arm like Sale or Gray. Wouldn’t be too get a closer in 3 years
mattyice13
Doesn’t make sense. Sox just added Kimbrel. Wouldn’t move Owens/Johnson, unless they got a starter like Sale or Gray. Not to add a closer for 3 years down the road
mattyice13
Wouldn’t happen. Owens and Johnson would only be moved in deals regarding a pitcher like Sonnie Gray or Chris Sale, not a future closer in maybe 3 years
SaladFingers69
Miley not being “much of an upgrade over what is already on staff” does not mean the Mariners are going to get him for nothing. He’s super affordable, a solid SP, and consistent. He’s a far more valuable piece than he’s getting credit for.
Andyman516
iwakuma would have been a gem to keep, so thus it begins, dipotos undoing for failing to ‘re-sign Iwakuma….not impressed with his moves so far
nixon07
Please be clay. Both sides need a change, he’s worn out his welcome in Boston.
greatd
Buchholtz is a brittle guy who could fall apart at any minute.
He’s not worth trading for.
I’d take chances on Miley or Kelly because they’d at least eat up innings for us.
highfivecity
Kelly pitched 140 innings last year….
aggee10
He was sent down to AAA. He also injured his shoulder.
bosox83
I wouldn’t be sad to see Miley and his 4 1/2 ERA and temper tantrums leave.
harmony55
For Wade Miley the Mariners could afford to give up a reliever because of the lefthander’s ability to eat innings lessens the workload on the bullpen.
Eric D.
Trading a starter for a reliever straight up is one of the dumbest things a team can do.
bklyn66
Except the time Bill Bavasi traded Rafael Soriano for Horacio *bleeping* Ramirez.
dirtywater433
Kelly can’t stay healthy either. I don’t think he’s even logged 150 innings once yet in the majors.
crosstownkid 3
That’s was more because Boston moved him down and up, and to the bullpen..
SaladFingers69
He’s also pitched 150+ innings twice in the past four years (albeit some of those innings came in MiLB, but it seems his ability to put up innings was what was in question). He was also regularly pulled pretty early in ballgames due to his inability to get batters out as the game progressed. Obviously this is a knock on him, but his last handful of starts don’t count for nothing either. I mean, Rich Hill just got $6MM for four starts. Kelly has more of a track record of success than that and is under control for longer and should remain cheap.
Tko11
Who would replace either of these guys? Even with Price the rotation is sub par.
Eric D.
Owens, Kelly, or Brian Johnson.
Burback
They would probably go after another FA SP to go with price.. Maybe maeda from Japan? There are pitchers out there but he crop is pretty low… I have no idea who the Sox would get in return for either of these guys.. The mariners don’t have much to offer do they?
tff17
Could be a rookie (Henry Owens or Brian Johnson). Could be another signing. They have reasonable depth in the rotation, just a lot of mediocrity.
tff17
True, at least until Buchholz gets injured.
B-Strong
Theyve got Price, Buch, Miley, E-Rod, Kelly, and Porcello now, with Owens in the wings. They could afford to lose a guy and still have enough for a 5 man rotation.
Tko11
You can never have enough pitching. I also don’t think that is a good rotation. Other than Price all those guys are question marks. Lots of potential but even more question marks.
B-Strong
They have price, buch, miley, porcello, kelly, e-rod, and owens waiting in the wings. They can lose a guy and still field a competitive 5 man.
smallm
There is a mistake in the article. Buchholz would be more than a one-year-rental, as the Sox — and consequently any team that would acquire him — are holding an option for 2017.
Bob Smiley
What type of player would the Redsox even want from the Mariners?
tff17
There is a team option on Buchholz for 2017…
joshacks
Bucholz has a team option for next year (2017) for 13.25 or 13.5 million – he could be a rental by declining the option or have another year of control. The article is incorrect,
kherz23
Does anyone think that Owens and a low level prospect would work for a guy like Paxton?
Eric D.
I would rather just keep Owens.
jrwhite21
You want want to trade Miley PLUS a prospect for another, younger Miley?
emac22
I wouldn’t be surprised if the deal was for Porcello. A deal for Porcello and either Sandoval or Ramirez would allow Mariners to get two potentially very helpful players for less than the free agent they probably couldn’t get to go to Seattle anyway.
They could also take on cash instead of gutting their system and I’m sure the Sox would include money and prospects to make that happen.
Porcello would do better in Seattle, obviously, and Sandoval is used to having a big home park.
marinersblue96
Where would Sandoval play? 3rd base is locked down with Seager. Ramirez would be very intriguing at 1B, but has a hefty contract and injury issues.
Eric D.
So What horrible contract would Boston be forced to take on? Cano? That’s not happening. Not unless Porcello and Ramirez are essentially free. I for one actually really like Porcello, he’s much better than his ERA indicates. He is more valuable to Boston than he is on the trade market.
adshadbolt
Bucholz, koji and marrero for Jackson and a prospect.
jrwhite21
Austin Jackson isn’t with Seattle anymore and even if he was that’s not a good trade for Boston. Marrero is a Gold Glove caliber defender and Koji, at 41, is still one of the better relievers in baseball.
Eric D.
he means Alex Jackson
dshires4
Which is all the more reason that the proposed Buch/Koji/Marrero deal is laughable. The Mariners not only would hang up laughing, but they’d secretly text all the other 28 front offices in a group chat for a good laugh.
redsox239
I’m sorry but your insane or ignorant if you don’t think Buchholz alone should get Jackson not to mention much more. Then Uehara is old but its only one year and he is still an elite reliever, and Marrero is what he is but has Gold Glove Caliber defense.
jrwhite21
The same Alex Jackson who’s hit .207 is his albeit short minor league career? I would still rather a potential back-end bullpen piece for that package. If Jackson were to be supplementary to Carson Smith, that’s a solid trade to me.
dshires4
The same Alex Jackson that is playing in a league where he’s years younger than the average age? The same Alex Jackson that lost developmental time because he took a ball to the face? The same Alex Jackson that was rated as one of the best players in his draft? Yes. That very same buy has exponentially more value than a guy who is only a year removed from a 5+ ERA season, and an old reliever. Only in MLB The Show, or Boston, would that deal make sense.
kingfelix34
Add jbj and then Seattle could throw in Elias
pullhitter445
Miley is a number 5 starter at best. Bad call not ponying up and resigning iwakuma
aprogie
miley and sandoval(or ramirez) for cano lol
half serious/half joking
Niekro
Cano was still a 3.5 war player in down year, Sandoval and Ramirez were both below replacement level. replace them with Pedroia and the half serious part may be taken.
mike244
Cano is signed for 8 more season. He has more negative value than Sandoval
Niekro
No, Cano is still a productive MLB player Sandoval is not.
Niekro
4 years of nothing is not better than 8 years of Cano as you can not predict the future as to when Cano will stop being productive no matter how much you think you can, his contract is also on the fast track to looking cheap in terms of AAV. By the time Cano is in full decline people will probably be making 40 million a year.
