We’ve heard persistent rumors that the Marlins could still be willing to listen to trade offers for star righty Jose Fernandez, even if the asking price is incredibly steep. Though president of baseball operations Michael Hill said yesterday that Fernandez is “not available,” the rumors have carried over into the second day of the Winter Meetings.
Here’s the latest:
- The Dodgers have discussed trying to involve a third team in trade talks for Fernandez, according to Rosenthal (Twitter link).
Earlier Updates
- Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria says there’s “nothing I am thinking about doing at the moment” with Fernandez, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports tweets.
- Yankees sources tell Joel Sherman of the New York Post (Twitter links) that the team never offered Severino and isn’t interested in doing so. The club has not held “substantive talks” on Fernandez, per the report.
- About a dozen clubs have inquired on Fernandez, MLB.com’s Joe Frisaro reports (Twitter links). The Dodgers appear to be the best match, he says, if they’d part with Seager, Urias, and more. Needless to say, that’s a big “if.” The Yankees were willing to give up their best young arm, Luis Severino, per the report, but Frisaro adds that it doesn’t seem New York has enough to give for Fernandez even if it included first baseman Greg Bird.
- The Giants have also had conversations with Miami about Fernandez, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports. Meanwhile, the Dodgers appear unwilling to involve Corey Seager in any deal but could consider including top pitching prospect Julio Urias in a package.
- Miami appears to be engaging in discussions on Fernandez more to gauge his future value than to structure a deal right now, Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald writes.
- A rival executive tells Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (Twitter link) that Miami still does not seem terribly willing to part with Fernandez. “They haven’t proposed anything reasonable enough to make people think they want to deal,” said the anonymous source.
- A source tells Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle (via Twitter) that the Astros aren’t the “mystery team” pursuing Fernandez.
- There’s a mystery team entering the picture on Fernandez with a “very strong” bid, ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark reports. Sources with “other clubs” tell Stark that the Astros are believed to be the shadowy pursuer. Stark also adds that a deal increasingly seems plausible, with Miami possibly holding off on pursing a Marcell Ozuna deal while the team explores the addition of an outfielder through a trade of Fernandez.
- As Stark notes in the story, he previously reported that the Dodgers, Diamondbacks, and Yankees have at least contacted the Marlins regarding Fernandez, though Arizona is said to have dropped out of the picture.
If it is Houston, it’s gotta be a massive prospect haul. I wouldn’t think the Stros would trade any of their current major league regulars.
This is gonna be fun to watch.
I could see a McCullers or a Velasquez being traded. My first thought was McCullers, Bregman, and Appel.
appel looks like a bust at this point. Don’t understand why the Dodgers wont unload some talent/ don’t get why their fans are so oppose to trading seager/urias for a cheap, young legitimate stud ace. Fernandez isn’t a “Tanaka” type ace…
You would have to trade both Urias and Seager for Fernandez. That’s a blow
i mean, you kind of have to give something up to get something…I think keeping the young talent makes sense for the Dodgers if they concede the season to be somewhat of a retooling where they are competitive, but not exactly championship caliber, think more Dallas Mavericks than Philadelphia 76ers.
Not for a team that prints money. It would devastate a team like the Twins to trade away Buxton and Sano. But the Dodgers would barely notice that loss. They can just spend another $18 billion dollars on the international market in a couple of years to make up for the loss.
Yeah he looks like he might become a bust, but he still has some value. Not as much as you would hope the overall #1 pick would have after 3 years, but he is still a top 100 prospect.
Dodger fans are against it cause we are not stupid enough to trade away their immediate future. We barely recovered from trading Pedro Martinez to the expose
lol but how is a Fernandez-seager/urias swap the same as a deshields-pedro swap. Fernandez is more Pedro in this scenario anyway.
7 division titles and 2 wild cards, (including 2 straight divisions right after he was traded) since that trade happened. Yeah the Dodgers barely recovered.
Probably because Seager and Urias are the 2 and 4 prospects in all of MLB and Fernandez has already had TJS.
good point on the TJS. i mean i dont care about either team. I just feel like dodgers-marlins trade would be fair or not as preposterous as some dodgers fans are making it.
We are mainly only opposed to trading seager because we have no other decent option at ss. We have no issue with them including urias tho
I hope it’s the Sox but Dodgers might need him more
Jays should trade Encarnacion, Revere, Hutchison and a minor leaguer for Fernandez. Good deal
As a Jays fan, that sounds great! But no chance Miami accepts that offer.
Yeah, that’s a genuinely terrible offer haha
pillar, aaron.sanchez, 2 of the top prospects.
pillar is a stud in center field
sanchez produced in the pen, now ready for starting rotation
both are cheap and long term possession
Blue Jays have any prospects left?
think they trade springer?
If it’s the Astros, the headliner would probably be Lance McCullers or Vincent Velazquez. Both two young starters with high ceilings who broke onto the scene last year and would probably greatly appeal to Miami.
*Both young starters
Appel, Bregman, McCullers or Velasquez, Kemp, one of the Tuckers, As an Astros fan I wouldn’t have a problem with this… Question is would they have to give up Reed? Probably so…
Way too much.
Okay, maybe 1 or 2 are going to hit. Meanwhile, Astro’s are contenders RIGHT NOW and add 3 years of true #1.
Isn’t that worth it to have a real chance at world series if you don’t have enough money for the greinke’s and price’s of the world ??
Cubs? They could send Soler, Torres, + … . Then have the money to sign Heyward, and A. Jackson as 4th outfielder. Keep Baez to be your utility infielder. Team complete!
lol
Soler and Torres would be a strong start, but I’m guessing it would have to include a few more of the Cubs top prospects – perhaps Almora AND Edwards. As highly regarded as Soler and Torres both are, that duo really doesn’t hold a candle to the Seager/Urias asking price.
Let’s offer them Velasquez, Bregman, Appel and Marisnick and see if they bite.
I don’t think that would do it, or even be close. If you are ok with, or like giving up a package for a guy like Fernandez, it isn’t enough. Think what it would take to land Felix in his prime, before all the money. Honestly he is arguably as good or better than Dallas Keuchel.. He will cost more than Cole, Archer, and Kluber.
yeah, i don’t understand all the lowballing people are pushing forward. This isn’t for a two month rental, this is a young ace who is controllable. Marlines aren’t looking to move a player who is not about to test free agency for a couple top 100 prospects.
Feel as though Springer has got to be involved
Miami’s wierd. “Let’s make the most expensive deal ever, then try to trade our center fielder and one of the ten best pitchers in the league”
Don’t they beat to their own drum
Heyman proposed a trade for the Sox:E-rod,Espinoza,Moncada,Devers for Fernandez. That’s too much in my book
It is probably about right but that doesn’t mean I would do it. I just don’t want to lose Moncada, ERod and Espinoza in the same trade for anything. More palpable without ERod bust still a haul.
I’m really torn because I would love to have Fernandez.
Fernandez is great but he is definitely a risk given how early in his career he blew out his arm. For that reason I wouldn’t make that trade as the Red Sox. Maybe if they left Espinoza out of it, so he could develop and replace Fernandez in rotation should injury arise down the line.
That is an absolutely ridiculous trade offer. Four of their best young prospects from a top 3 farm in the entire game??
Hopefully Yankees hop in something like Miller, Gardner, judge, Bryan Mitchell (mia supposedly interested in Mitchell) might get it done
not even close mate.Yankees don’t have the prospects to outbid teams with elite farm systems
Yes they do. Judge and Severino are two of the best prospects in the game and could match prospect offers by any team except the Dodgers and maybe one or two others.
That being said, I do agree that that package is light. Other than Judge, there’s not a whole lot compelling there. The Yankees would need to offer Judge, Severino and propbably a third good young piece like Sanchez or Bird. Which they won’t.
Yanks – Aaron Judge / Jorge Mateo / Carlos Beltran (Yanks pay 7.5 of his final year’s salary of 15 mil) Adam Warren / Bryan Mitchell for Marlins – Jose Fernandez and Marin Prado.
Severino + Judge + another solid option is the only way a conversation gets started for Fernandez. I wouldn’t do it if I were the Yankees. Severino looks solid and he is under control for longer.
Judge and Severino are not even close to Urias,Moncada,Devers,Seager ect…
There’s Zero chance the yankees trade Severino. He’s 21 and pitched to a sub 3.00 era in the American League. No sense trading one young stud for a better one 2 years closer to huge money.
Mattingly knows the value of a closer. If he wants miller and they love mateo (a sure thing SS prospect) or judge, it could get done. I don’t want to trade miller. Miller pitches every other day; Fernandez only piches every fifth day. Stud closers are worth more to me.
Maybe not, but most teams aren’t giving up their farm system for Fernandez.
But they should. How many prospects work out? How many times do you add 3 years of true #1 pitcher ?
I’ll trade 3 or 4 prospects all day long for that…
Jose Fernandez’s Home/Away splits are bad Like really, really bad. Bad enough that I wouldn’t want to trade for him.
Home: 17-0, 1.40 ERA, 0.901 WHIP
Away: 5-9, 3.78 ERA, 1.170 WHIP
These stats are certainly not the most telling, but what do you see that’s “really, really bad”?
I like the idea of Jose in our rotation but please don’t give up all our top arms.
But Dallas and Jose as our 1 and 2!?!?!?!?!? That would be sick.
Worked so well for the Dodgers…
To the mariners for James Paxton and OF Alex Jackson and 1b/3b DJ Peterson and SP Edwin Diaz The number 1 and 3 and 4 prospect for the mariners and James Paxton who has potential to be number 2 starter easily.
No way the marlins take that. Switch Paxton with Walker and throw in Luiz Gohora to start a conversation
Even then it might take Zunino as well. Alex Jackson hit .200 in single A last year. DJ hit .220 between AA and AAA with only 13 homers. James Paxton is always injured and even at safeco has an era over 3.50. The Mariners simply don’t have the farm. Realistically a conversation should start with Kyle Seager, Taijuan Walker, James Paxton and Alex Jackson.
As much as I’d love Jose Fernandez to come to Seattle it would take all of our top 30 prospects or all our your major leaguers.
So most unfortunately we will not acquire Jose Fernandez
Red Sox would love him….Jackie Bradley..Moncada…Joe Kelly…Devers and Owens for Fernandez
How about Shelby Miller and Julio Teheran for that group?
I can see the Dodgers not wanting to part with Seager, but Urias would be acceptable getting back a pitcher like Fernandez. I wonder if something like Pedersen, Peraza, Alvarez, and let Miami pick between Urias and DeLeon, would be enough for Miami?
I think that a package of Urias, Pederson, Peraza, and Alvarez is a very strong offer. If that wouldn’t get it done, then Miami isn’t really looking to deal Fernandez.
I just see that being a terrible idea. I would rather sign someone like Cueto then trade for Fernandez and give up all of that for a pitcher with a lot of injury problems. I know he’s young but he already had tommy John and has a history of attitude problems
lets say the Cardinals are the mystery team what would it take for them to get him?
If it’s the Stros: Reed, Velazquez, Appel and Kemp .
Urias, Seager, deLeon, take them all!! Then add Fernandez and win titles baby!! Other than Trout, Fernandez has highest ceiling in all of MLB.
Harper, Correa, Bryant, Machado to just name a few who would take issue with that statement.
Braves could deal one of Lucas Sims or Mike Foltynewicz, plus Tookie Tousaint and Ricardo Sanchez for Jose Fernandez.
Braves are shopping miller there not going to get fernandez
You broke the news here the GM said he was not shopping Miller.
That wouldn’t be close to enough,
The red sox could give them henry owens, brian johnson, blake swihart, and garrin checcini
Could send Shelby Miller and Christian Bethancourt for that package.
lol. The deal starts w. Betts/Boegarta and then add on 2-3 of those names.
If the Fish want to do a package, the Braves could send Hector Olivera and Shelby Miller for Jose Fernandez and Marcel Ozuna.
That’s a joke, yes? Please say yes.
why should the Marlins add a prospect to the deal or Dee Gordon?
Ok, yeah, you’re joking. Cool. I was worried for a second.
You must be a braves fan. Fernandez is better than Shelby Miller, Ozuna is only 23 and has 30 hr power he displayed in 2014. He had a horrific 2015 for himself, yet compared to his peers he was average-ish. Olivera doesn’t have a great contract and is 29 already. Besides that, the Marlins wouldn’t be upgrading anywhere by trading Fernandez for Miller. They would want something that they view will be equal to Fernandez in the future. So that most likely means they would want a pitching prospect like Severino, E-Rod, Urias, Berrios, Glasnow, Matz, etc, as well as another top prospect most likely offensively like Judge, Seager, Devers, Buxton, etc.
I’m a Braves fan and realize this can’t really be close. I would like to think Miller, Sims, Touki, and maybe Ellis/ManBan/Folty would do for Fernandez and Prado but even that might not be enough.
The Cubs are the mystery team.
That would be nuts. As a Mets fan…I sure as hell hope not.
And maybe the sox could throw in devin marrerue too
Trout for Fernandez and Ozuna
So the Marlins would have the two best OFs in the league probably surrounded by 23 minimum salary players. Not exactly a great way to build a fan base for the Marlins or MLB.
Yankees — Aaron Judge (of) / Jorge Mateo (ss) / Carlos Beltran (Yanks pay half of salary 7.5 mil) / Adam Warren (sp) / Bryan Mitchell (sp)
Marlins – Jose Fernandez Martin Prado
I’m gonna be really happy if it’s the Mariners and they get him
If the D-Backs, Dodgers, or Giants get Fernandez I’m not watching baseball next year.
– Rockies fan
Possible “Mystery Team Offers”:
Twins give Byron Buxton, Nick Gordon, Jose Berrios and Tyler Jay for Marcell Ozuna and Jose Fernandez
Rangers give Nomar Mazara, Chi Chi Gonzalez, Joey Gallo, and Jurickson Profar for Jose Fernandez
Diamondbacks give AJ Pollock, Patrick Corbin, Braden Shipley, Jake Lamb, and Chris Owings for Adeiny Hechavarria and Jose Fernandez
I dont think the Diamondbacks would give up that much
No chance DBacks give up such a package. Pollock himself has tremendous value.
Henry Owens, JBJ, Kopech and Sean Coyle for Fernandez?
Not even close?
they might have to throw in Stanton to even it out
While picking up two thirds of his salary, don’t forget.
Diamondbacks offer
Patrick Corbin, Archie Bradley, Ender Inciarte, Braden Shipley, Yoan Lopez
Cubs offer
Javier Baez, Jorge Soler, Kyle Hendricks, Jeimer Candalaerio
Astros offer
Lance McCuller, Alex Bregman, Kyle Tucker, Mark Appel
Dodgers offer
Joc Pederson, Julio Urias, Grant Holmes, Peraza, another B prospect
These are the 4 teams I can see making a deal and my idea of fair trades from all teams
Let me guess. You are a Marlins fan.
I think that the Cubs would accept that pretty quickly. I can’t imagine a trade where Fernandez comes to the north side without us giving up at least one of Russell/Bryant/Schwarber/Torres.
Definitely a Marlins fan.
The Dodgers aren’t giving up their young starting CF, three top 100 prospects including arguably the most valuable arm in the minors, and a solid B prospect.
Jose Quintana and Avi Garcia for Fernandez ?
This is exactly the type of deal that Cashman will push all=in on…
Yanks — Aaron Judge OF / Jorge Mateo SS/ Carlos Beltran OF (yanks pay 7.5 mill of 2016 salary) / Adam Warren SP / Bryan Mitchell SP
Marlins — Jose Fernandez SP and Martin Prado 2B
Not even close
Could the royals be that mystery team, it would make sense, they need a starter and they have the prospects to trade, the rotation could be Fernandez, Volquez, Ventura, Medlin, Duffy, if they trade Duffy then Chris Young would be the 5th starter, That’s just an idea and it may not happen but it would be fun just to see
Possible Trade: Bubba Starling,Wade Davis, Danny Duffy, Chestlor Cuthbert going to Miami for Jose Fernandez, Marcell Ozuna and a minor league pitcher
That wouldn’t get it done. It would probably take the royals top 5 prospects considering their weak farm and the Marlins asking price along with Ventura.
One player that they wouldn’t trade would be Raul Mondesi, their #1 prospect, they may trade Ventura but it would be unlikely
That would be way too little for Jose alone, with Ozuna and the pitcher it’s just laughable. Starling and Cuthbert both have very little trade value.
I disagree with that one, Starling and Cuthbert both have trade value, Starling is a power hitting outfielder and Cuthbert is an athletic 2b/3b that can hit for a high average if they don’t have trade value I don’t know who has good trade value
I think a package of Urias, Holmes and Verdugo would be a fair package for Fernandez.
Miami would be getting the Dodgers top prospect in Urias and 3 of the Dodgers top 7 prospects overall (per MLB.com).
This is why young aces with 3-4 years of control left don’t get traded. Their incumbent teams know they can get a great trade offer a year or two later, so they absolutely refuse to settle. Meanwhile, the inquiring team has to basically empty the farm to get the proven commodity.
Yankees don’t offer Severino and bird. He’s not worth it
To the Jays for Saunders, Smaok Dicky and Thole. Make it happen Shipiro.
Fantastic deal for both teams!
The Yankees don’t have enough ? So even if they offer severino , judge , bird , Sanchez or mateo it wouldn’t be close ?
Not the best of matches, Severino would be held in high esteem but the Marlins already have young middle infielders and corner outfielders and a young 1B and C.. I think it would have to have more arms going the marlins way or a clear cut upgrade like Seager.
The RedSox will get Jose if they want to make an offer. No other team comes close to the players they have. these guys get it done. Moncada, Espinoza, Devers, JBJ, Kelly, and Owens .
boston could end up with Jose and Ozuna.
lol
I love how Red Sox fans act like their prospects are the greatest ever and future hall of famers already.
not really. but they have the names in the minors and depth in the MLB lineup to make a deal. Dodgers can, but will have to offer up Seager and Urias. Astros can, but will have to put together a huge package, and we all know Correa is not going to be in the mix.
Sigh. I love how fans from fan base A who dislike team B try to claim there’s some universal negative trait of the fanbase of team B when the same trait is not present in every fan team B and is in fact present in some part of every fanbase base, team A included.
Alright here’s my ridiculous trade proposal
Astros get Jose, Adeiny Hechavarria, Ozuna, and Mike Dunn
Marlins get Carlos Correa, lance McCuller, Preston tucker, and JD Davis
Rockies get Jose, Ozuna
Marlins get Blackmon, Brendan Rogers (ptbnl), Jon Gray,Ryan McMahon, and Antonio Senzatela
Carlos Correa to the Marlins? Go home chopy, you’re drunk
I did say “ridiculous trade proposal” btw
Here is my Red Sox offer. Not sure if the Marlins would have a ton of appeal for Swihart, but here it goes.
Swihart, Devers, Owens, JBJ, and a lottery ticket for Jose Fernandez.
There is three MLB ready pieces there for Miami, as well as one of the best prospects in the game. Not sure if it is enough, but I don’t think it is too far off if Swihart appeals to them.
Could the Braves be the third team? Would make some sense, Braves could get Ozuna in a three team swap.
Plus they can deal from their wealth of pitching prospects (which is the plan) to gain an MLB ready, or established MLB, hitter.
It’s gettin crazy.
Talk is cheap … but also pointless if the Dodgers won’t part with Seager. He’s the principal piece for any Fernandez trade with LA.
It would be just dumb for them to trade their ss away. That would be another big spot for them to fill for the up coming season.
If the Yankees were a team in play I could see a package including Gardner bird and a sp maybe nova since they don’t want to trade severino or Pineda
Not sure how the Giants make a deal without A) trading out the farm system (Arroyo, Beede, Bickford for starters) or B) sending Duffy or Belt as part of the deal. I’m sure they’d want Susac in any case.
If its true the dodgers are the team heavily involved trying to get him I seriously doubt they would ask sf to be he 3rd team
Wasn’t trying to speculate about a three-way trade (especially with the Dodgers). Just talking about how much it would take for the Giants to get Fernandez.
Cubs should sign heyward. Trade soler and Baez plus one of Duane underwood/pierce Johnson and Christian Villanueva/jeimer candeliero for Fernandez and ozuna
