Even after agreeing to terms with free agent ace Zack Greinke on a gigantic, gutsy contract, the Diamondbacks aren’t through looking for pitching help. There is still mutual interest between the Diamondbacks and free agent starter Mike Leake, Diamondbacks beat writer Jack Magruder tweets. The Giants are also still contenders for Leake’s services, Magruder notes — even though they, too, have committed a big chunk of change to a top free agent starter in Jeff Samardzija. Here’s more from out of Arizona.
- While the Diamondbacks are interested in acquiring another pitcher, the amount of money they’ve committed to Greinke might mean they’re more likely to turn to the trade market, MLB.com’s Steve Gilbert writes. It’s very unlikely that they would trade A.J. Pollock, Gilbert writes, but they could deal from their collection of infielders.
- Diamondbacks baseball isn’t usually a burning topic in December, even in Phoenix, but the Greinke deal changes that, Dan Bickley of the Arizona Republic writes. It makes them a contender and it makes them relevant, and it also helps weaken their NL West foes in Los Angeles. It also reflects a change in approach for the Snakes, who lately have avoided the risk associated with expensive long-term deals.

I’m still wondering if they will try for Chapman again too.

It would be quite confusing if the Diamondbacks trade Pollock after signing Greinke. They should be all-in the next 2-3 years.
kman5000
Any moves from their big league roster will more than likely involve Lamb, Drury, Owings, Hill or Ahmed. Hill is almost a lock to be moved if we can get at least half of his salary back. Tomas is the only OF that I think is likely to be moved. I agree with you. Time to go all in but they have to be smart.

??
They should be all in now.

Just because Atlanta keeps calling Arizona asking for Pollock doesnt mean they are shopping him. Like you said, they are all in for the next few years. Getting rid of one of the top offensive players for a #3 doesn’t even make sense. AZ does have a lot of OFs to trade but AZ front office has repeatedly stated Pollock and Goldy are not going anywhere.
BB_dont_R
If the dbax cannot sign Pollock to an extension in the next 30 days there is no reason not to trade your most valuable commodity to acquire more pitching. Granted I agree with management that Shelby Miller is not the answer, but for me, I dangle Pollock to Clevland for Carlos Carrasco. I would even throw in one of the infeilders too like Owings. Carresco was dangled at the deadline, Brantley is starting the season on the DL and the tribe have an abundance of starters. Carresco has reasonable salary and team control for the next 5 years and would create a formidable 1, 2 with Greinke. Then flip hill and Ahmed or drury to the Nats for Papelbon. Then they are all in for next season, and have a solid top of the rotation for the duration of the Goldy era.
kman5000
Carrasco is a #3 at best in the current AZ rotation. Nobody is saying Miller isn’t worth it. Miller isn’t worth Pollock. Carrasco doesn’t even come close and adding Owings makes me really question the validity of this post. Papelbon is a cancer that would never fit into the AZ clubhouse.
Brixton
You think Miller > Carrasco?
kman5000
Currently yes. In 2 seasons most likely not. 2 seasons will be nearing the close of our contention window.
BB_dont_R
Miller’s age is in his favor however his body of work is compiled with home seasons in STL, and ATL. Not exactly the same as Chase Field. I am not sure why you think all of the sudden dbax are on a 2 year window. If anything dbax window may be another year out. The dodgers have seemingly unlimited resources, and the Giants quickly acquiring Shark as plan B has them suring things up for the next couple years. Dbax are 1 year removed from 3years of trying to “win now… on a bargain bin budget.” To invest over $200M on 1 player for a 2 year window seems like bad baseball economics to me. Their major investment into Greinke along with their value on Goldschmidt tells me they are still buyers in the near future. They should be planning long term now, and like I said if he cannot be extended in the next 30 days he should be moved.
kman5000
Because the Dodgers and Giants magically lose those resources in 1 season? Your entire post is contradictory. “Think long term by trading half of your IF for a cancerous closing pitcher who is only under contract for 1 year. Trade your superstar OF and another IF for a pitcher that has had a decent last season in a half. Hasn’t done anything in the other 4.5 seasons he has been in the bigs though.” I’d love if Greinke held up the back half of his 6 year deal but I won’t hold my breath. Most others will agree. Their contention window is 2-3 years.
They are still buyers in the present. Shipping off 3/4 of the infield and a superstar OF for a #3 starter at best and a cancerous closer with 1 year left makes zero sense.
BB_dont_R
I proposed pollock and owings for carresco. I said it would be nice if we could flip hill and ahmed for 1 year of papelbon. The contradiction is in that you think pollock is half of our infield. He has had 1 all star season. Corbin has had 1 all star season. Maybe they should sign daniel murphey. He had 2 weeks of all star play in the post season. The diamondbacks had the impact signing that they have been talking about and they need to address far greater concerns short and long term to make their $200M investment payoff. Bullpen and a number 2 starter are parmount for them going into winter meetings.

nope. I do think the Indians and Dbacks would trade well together. salazar or Carrasco for an OF not named pollock and a few top prospects.
prestigeworldwide
Carrasco is a legit #2. His 5yr contract makes him very valuable in this market to any team. Still the Dbacks wont move Pollock for him.
kman5000
Better than Corbin? Doubt it.

Based on this article this is why I would offer Pollock for Carresco. The value of his contract is unreal in todays market. He would be the dbax clear cut 2. Look at K/9 and WHIP for those that feel Corbin or if acquired Miller, and still think would be better??? I was extremely happy when Eaton was moved over Pollock, however I still cringe at the previous regimes lack of forsight in leveraging Ian Kennedy’s value while in AZ. If we have the hype in Pollock right now sell high and net a 1, 2 punch that could allow you to cpntend with 2 major market division rivals for the next 4-5 years. We can find another outfielder we always seem to.
BB_dont_R
K/9, WHIP, more established and trade off for park factor with move from AL TO NL. Carresco > Corbin even with Corbin being a lefty.
kman5000
Well we can agree to disagree. I didn’t want or need the link to the article and it only reinforces my opinion. He’s been in the league 6 years and last season was his first decent season of starting all year and it still doesn’t blow me away. He strikes me as someone who won’t stick. I equate him to Trevor Bauer ironically. Definitely nowhere near Corbin currently and potentially. Pollock for Carrasco is absurd.
BB_dont_R
The half season before last season was the indicator that he had figured it out. Pull up stats post all star 2014. Corbin returned from injury last season and hopefully he gets better as he returns to form and does become a 2. He was servicable last season and was a season and a half removed from a great season. He also could up like Brandon Beachy, or even closer in relationship Daniel Hudson. Pollock was great last year granted, but last I checked the AL MVP was acquired in trade last off season because it made more sense for the team dealing him to deal him rather than pay him since they couldn’t work out an extension they liked.
BEATNGU
This coming from a Dodger Fan I love Goldy it irks me that he signed for so cheap. I really don’t understand the 6 years @ 206 mil though he probably has 3 good years if that left. There need to be way more pieces and trading Pollock is def not one of them this dude beats us up. .
scottaz
I agree that the D’backs are more likely to trade for a pitcher. The one exception is Leake. He’s got local roots (ASU) and he won’t cost a second round draft pick. But any trades will not involve Pollack. He is elite level defensively and nearly elite level offensively. Shelby Miller may be an ace in Atlanta, but in Case Field, he’s a 3, and you don’t trade elite players for a 3.
BB_dont_R
I think at this point we drive the price up on him but ultimately back out and let him go back to SF. The Giants need him more than we do and after signing Greinke I don’ see the resources to acquire. Better to drain the competetion’s that have more funds and flexibility to work with.
