DECEMBER 18: Chacin will earn a $1.1MM salary if he’s in the majors, Heyman tweets.
DECEMBER 14: The Braves have reached agreement on a minor league pact with righty Jhoulys Chacin, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports on Twitter.
Chacin was outrighted by the Diamondbacks in early November, as Arizona decided not to tender him a contract through arbitration. He had been projected to earn $1.8MM via arbitration.
Atlanta could end up utilizing Chacin in a swingman capacity, as he’s spent time as both a starter and reliever in recent seasons. Last year, he had a solid (albeit brief) showing in the majors and also compiled 137 2/3 innings of 3.27 ERA pitching at Triple-A.
Chacin has been effective as a full-time big league starter as recently as 2013. That year, he fell just shy of 200 innings and managed a 3.47 ERA despite pitching at altitude.

I was hoping he’d sign with the Braves one day.

Good signing.
The Oregonian
The problem with Atlanta is they have too many position players and not enough pitchers. All jokes aside… this could be a nice under the radar pickup.
PhilliesFan012
He could either really help the bullpen in a swing Role or even a set up role, or he could be a nice 3-4 starter barring a good comeback, between him and Norris they Have some depth pitching wise now it’s time to buff up the lineup a bit
2016aAintSoBad
The lineup is probably done.
Inciarte CF
Aybar SS
Markakis RF
Freeman 1B
Olivera LF
AJ/Flowers C
Beckham 3B
Peterson 2B
Unless they find a 3B with pop, this is probably pretty close to the opening day lineup.
bravosfan4life
Freeman is gonna be in the 3 hole that’s his spot now he has earned it I think Frazier would be a good fit for us for that 3rd base spot if they don’t trust Olivera there
bravos4evr
adding expensive veterans is pointless now. Braves are gonna go with Garcia at 3b at first to see if he can stick as a starter then add Beckham later if need be.
bravosfan4life
Freeman is 3rd in the batting order he has earned that I also think that Frazier could be a great fit and the bat we need in our lineup as long as we can get him without out giving up what we have gotten from heyward that is if they don’t want hector in the 3rd base spot
GreenCustom24
Adonis Garcia is the 3B with pop. Look for him to be the starter with Beckham being the defensive replacement since Garcia fields 3B as well as Ryan Howard would play CF.
2016aAintSoBad
That sounds accurate to me.
Alex12284
Pretty close, but don’t count out Ardonis Garcia at 3rd. He killed winter ball recently and put up decent power numbers albeit in a short sample size last year. I foresee Beckham/Peterson platoon at 2nd.
southi
It would be a crime if Gonzalez doesn’t platoon Beckham and Peterson. I expect for Garcia to start the season as the regular thirdbaseman. Beckham (and Bonafacio some) will make spot starts there and also close out games there.
As far as Chacin goes: you have to love low cost, low risk signings with legitimate upside.
bravosfan4life
Let’s get this straight first Freeman has earned 3rd in batting order that spot is his. Now onto the rest I think Todd Frazier would be a great fit for Atlanta as long as we don’t have to give up who we got for heyward during all this trading Frazier would be a great fit for our line up
bravos4evr
why? we aren’t going to win so spending prospects on a veteran player 2 years from free agency would be a waste of resources. accept the suckage and be patient for 2017 and beyond.
braves25
You posting the same thing 3 times doesn’t change the fact that no one agrees with you. Trading for Frazier would have been a horrible move for a rebuilding Atl club. I am excited about the possibility of the wort record in baseball. Yes I am EXCITED!!! We get to watch some of these young players start to develop and see what they are made of. Plus the chance for a #1 pick sounds great top me.
R.D.
Great pickup! Loved watching this guy in Colorado. Could bring in a big haul at the deadline.
My money’s on Teheran/Wisler/Norris/Blair/Chacin to start the season.
bravosfan4life
I’d rather see this rotation 1.Teheran 2. Wisler. 3. Blair 4. Norris/Chacin 5. Folty if we don’t think of Folty as a starter groom him to become our closer while we have grilli here make him our setup guy
southi
I’d expect Teheran, Wisler, Norris, Chacin and most likely Perez (who had actually better overall stats than most of the other braves rookies). Banuelos and Folty would be the next two best shots. But then again hard to tell at this point with so much fluidity in the situation.
braves25
Hopefully the Braves can also add Henderson Alvarez to the mix.
Teheran, Alvarez, Wisler, Norris, and Banuelos. Perez and Chacin are depth with Folty moving to the pen.
I understand the idea of Folty as a starter, but With Newcomb, Sims, Jenkins, Blair and Fried all close to being ready they can afford to groom Folty to be at the back end of the pen teamed with Simmons. Plus McDowell could possibly turn Krol into our new Venters. Then you have Krol, Simmons, Folty, and Vizcaino in 2017. Also don’t forget about Paco Rodriguez in 2017 helping anchor that bullpen.
Mark 20
Wow a minor league deal? really? This guy was good recently pitching at coors, and even did well in a brief stint last year for the D backs. Odd that no team, even the phillies, wouldnt take a chance on a big league deal with him.
jamanningusmc
I’m a huge fan of this signing, nothing to lose here and he could turn out to be a solid innings eater that can be flipped at the deadline. And if he is a bust… no worries
ryeandi
I’m a huge Chacin fan and think he’s the most under-rated pitcher in the MLB. The D-backs really missed an opportunity not keeping him around, especially if all it took was a minor league deal.
jamesa-2
His success in 2015 was dubious at best. In the end, it is results that matter, and he got some. However, he did it all with smoke and mirrors. When he was on, hitting his spots the way he wanted to, and was getting the umps on the same page, he was serviceable. When he would miss, even a little though, he was hit very hard. He also had a decent stretch of time in AAA in 2015 where he was getting pretty beat up.
Chacin’s issue is that he has zero margin for error. He doesn’t have the stuff anymore to get away with missing. It isn’t like missing his pitch he can still rely on generating some weak outs. If he misses, he gets tagged hard. It’s tough to stick in a major league rotation when that is the case, since nearly every starter is going to have a few days where they are awful, and another handful of days where they aren’t on their game, but they manage to buckle down and tough out 5 innings. The problem for Chacin is that second group of games. For him, that second group of games looks just like the first group.
braves25
Very good signing. Adds depth and there doesn’t appear to be an opt-out if he isn’t on the mlb roster by a certain date. That hamstrung Atl some last year with their signings of some of the veteran pitchers.
krillin89
I love this pick up. Totally worth the risk of the low price tag.
