Great to see the experts on this site are finally coming to the “Sonny Gray is one of the most valuable assets in MLB” narratives, because he absolutely is. He costs nothing and is an ace on almost every team. He’s literally the second coming of Tim Hudson, and then some. IMO the only two singular players who have better value for money right now are Harper and Trout. Gray for Schwarber is light, but add Burns to Gray, and Baez, McKinney, Happ and Edwards to Schwarber and you’re looking at something more plausible that Beane would say yes to. Beane has absolutely no reason to trade Gray unless he’s getting at least 2 controllable everyday studs like Schwarber and Baez, but would need a pitching prospect back and some other parts too.
If you want Gray, you are overpaying, plain and simple. There’s no pitcher like him, not to mention his postseason record and his performance in Texas in the must-win game 162 in 2014, Sonny Gray might be the best value for money player in the game, now and in the next 3 years.
