Reiterating what Angels manager Mike Scioscia recently said himself, club president John Carpino says that the skipper “will not be involved in the GM selection process,” Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times reports. But he also acknowledged that a new hire won’t have full authority to chart the organization’s operating philosophies. Instead, per Carpino, that will be determined through a “collective effort,” which Shaikin says appears to be an implicit validation of the widely-held notion that the incoming GM will face some notable restrictions. Indeed, Scioscia expanded upon his recent comments regarding the need for philosophical harmony, which, he said, “encompasses, certainly, how you are going to recruit talent, the draft, free agents, international scouting, and the development process.”
- Answering some Angels fan questions, MLB.com’s Alden Gonzalez provides a look at some theoretical free agent targets. The Halos have rotation depth, but some within the organization believe a top-end arm would make sense, he says. If not, a significant corner outfielder — he addresses Yoenis Cespedes — could be under consideration.
- The collapse of the Orioles has been somewhat overshadowed by other divisional storylines, but has nevertheless been dramatic, as ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick explores. “It’s a snowball time of the year,” said manager Buck Showalter. “There’s so much positive and negative feeding frenzy this time of year, nothing is as good or bad as it seems.” There is immense uncertainty in Baltimore entering the offseason, and Crasnick sets the stage well for what figures to be an interesting winter.
- Blue Jays lefty David Price says he enjoyed his relationship with then-Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski, but doesn’t envision being uniquely moved to sign with the Red Sox just because Dombrowski is now at the helm there, as John Tomase of WEEI.com reports. Price did note that he has found his time in Toronto thus far to be “pretty special.” While it’s not at all clear whether Boston will pursue the star lefty, Dombrowski is obviously a fan (having acquired him at last year’s trade deadline) and has indicated that the team intends to improve the top of its rotation.

Of all the times for Cueto to have issues it seems. price in Boston = Trouble. Lackey played with fire in his belly, even when injured an entire season and tried, then gave them a season and a half, bad attitude and all. I know price is an amazing talent, but his attitude and the horrid Boston media just do not mix.
It’s a shame that with so many decent starting pitchers out there, it seems none really fit the bill when at the start of the season? Boston could have a choice among premier starters to go after. Maybe attempt to just get Shields for either Sandoval/Ramierz in a bad contract swap, as much trouble as Shields has had at Fenway his entire career. Doubt Dombrowski will settle with that. Just hope they don’t make any 200m dollar mistakes this offseason.
Could Grienke be the sleeper in Boston? Getting into some kind of bidding dispute with LA?
ianthomasmalone
Agreed. Price is a special pitcher, but his contract is going to be brutal and the Boston media will hold him to it.

Have to agree on Price. There’s already some bad blood between him and the media and Boston sports media can be brutal. The Lackey issue was more that he only really gave it his all when the team was doing well. When they weren’t he couldn’t be bothered.
I could see Boston being a player for Shields but he alone won’t fix the rotation. I think Zimmermann might be a FA target.
As for Grienke, I wouldn’t be shocked to see him opt out with how well he’s doing. But I don’t see anyone competing with LA’s endless supply of money unless Grienke just really wants out of LA. If he doesn’t opt out it’ll be because LA approaches him with an extension the day after the WS ends.

Zimmerman just doesn’t look sharp this season to me in the few games have seen him pitch. Not the same guy, though will add the last game saw him pitch a couple of weeks ago was far better than how he was going in April and May.
Will that early start to the season hurt his FA earnings? I don’t know if he gets more than 5/110-125m or not and would be scared of that myself.
Lackey did go out there and pitch in 2011 with that tear in his elbow, saying after the season he pitched with immense pain the entire season. Not taking up for him, the guy had a pretty not likable attitude.

Actually I disagree, Greinke will opt out and somebody will outbid the dodgers for him

the Angels really need to change the title from ‘general manager’ to something more accurate… like ‘chief scapegoat’…

Stoneman was there for 8 years and there was never a problem. They competed almost all years and won a championship in one of them.

Dipoto ran himself out of Anaheim by trying to make his mark rather than just be a GM. GM’s should GM. Managers should manage. You try to take things out if the coaches’ hands and you’re asking for trouble.

I still remember David Ortiz threatening to beat up David Price after he threw at him a few years ago. Price also called him washed up a few months ago because he was struggling and wasn’t named an all-star. Price is going to get what he’s looking for from a verity of different teams.
User 4245925809
For sure. Price will get his millions and probably be the highest paid pitcher on the market, unless LA shocks everyone for some unknown reason and makes some wild offer to Grienke immediately after the season so he doesn’t test the market.
Old days, had Price continued this throwing at Ortiz war, he may have found himself in a world of hurt. People the size of Price shouldn’t wake gentle Giants. Reference Tippy Martinez who hit George Scott 2 times. 2nd time The Boomer went after him on the mound and Martinez made a bee-line behind the 3rd baseman.. I doubt Price would want anything to do with Ortiz either, beyond his mouth.
jaysfan1994
Ortiz and Price hate each other, seriously doubt Price entertains going to a place with a guy who threatened to fight him a few years ago especially when he’s going to have multiple suitors offering as much money as the Sox.
Let’s not forget Price called Ortiz washed up a few months ago when he didn’t get named an All-Star.

Got a game of musical chairs going……
Top-tier pitchers are available this year – Grienke, Price, Cueto and Zimmermann. There are a bunch of large budget teams wanting front-of-the-rotation guys – Dodgers, Yankees, Cubs, Red Sox, Nationals, Tigers. Possibly the Jays (with their financial windfall from winning) as well as the Giants. And of course some team will come out of nowhere as a bidder (Zimmermann to the team located closest to his home – the Twins?).
Not enough pitchers to go around.
bobbleheadguru
If Ilitch wants, he can overpay and get Price. He was very happy with the Tigers (of course he is with the Blue Jays as well).
DD traded Price, so there may be some negative vibes there.
I would think that Price would be willing to take a slight “hometown discount” with the Blue Jays or any team that is a short flight away from Nashville (like Detroit is). Otherwise, the highest bidder will get him.
I am not convinced that Price AND Cueto AND Grieke AND Zimmerman will all get what they want. The smart team may wait for the cost to drop on one of them.

After playing with 3 teams over the last 2 years I don’t think Price will be giving anyone a “hometown discount”

“with the Blue Jays or any team that is a short flight away from Nashville (like Detroit is)”
No offense, but that’s like half of baseball. Indians, Reds, Os, Cardinals, Brewers, Pirates, Nats, Royals, Braves, Cubs (long rumored to be in on Price), White Sox, Rays, Phillies are all similarly distanced to Nashville from Detroit, especially via flight.

If I’m the Red Sox (or any AL East team for that matter), I’m all in on Price. He might be a little too outspoken with the media, but he is a great pitcher (and AL East proven). The guy has been one of the healthiest pitchers in the league too, meaning he should be an innings-eater at the very least as his contract reaches near the end. The risk with him is more non-existent than the others, so if a team can get him for a contract not too high above the others (say around 215MM ), then it is a no-brainer to me as he is clearly the best option even with the additional price.

I know this means zip to Arte at the top of Angels management in Anaheim, but I’ve had it with their inept ways. Seems to me the Angels are about as clueless at the top as the New Orleans Saints. Sosh has way too much say in Angel personnel, which has been unacceptable this season, and the same exists with Sean Payton who answers to nobody but himself here in New Orleans. As of today, and I know this means nothing to the folks in Anaheim, I’m no longer going to waste my time following the Angels. I love Mike Trout and Aybar and our right fielder, but they have failed to fill a giant need for a catcher and beyond. Bye, bye Angels. I’m no longer going to deal with an inept Sosh who needs to retire. Who, in their right mind would take the GM job in Anaheim if they are not going to be able to apply their own approach. See ya!

Try being a Marlins fan for a while. Then you will understand what an inept front office really looks like
ryanw-2
Seems like my fellow fanbase plays victim a lot. That’s the only thing truly inept about the Angels. If they really were inept at the top they would not have had the best record in the majors last season and 7 playoff appearances in 12 years. All managers and head coaches have power. It’s always been that away. Dipoto should’ve respected that more instead of trying to be another Billy Beane clone.
