Here’s the latest from Ken Rosenthal, via a video on FOX Sports:
- The Phillies haven’t yet decided what to do with GM Ruben Amaro. On the surface, that seems strange, since other teams could soon hire top GM candidates to fill their open positions. The likely reason the Phillies haven’t made a move, Rosenthal suggests, is that incoming club president Andy MacPhail prefers not to rush decisions.
- Yankees assistant GM Billy Eppler is reportedly a top candidate for the open Angels GM job, and he wants the position, even though accepting it would mean working around owner Arte Moreno and influence-wielding manager Mike Scioscia. Eppler is from Southern California and would like to return to the area, Rosenthal says.
- Dallas Keuchel has put himself in a good negotiating position in potential extension talks with the Astros and he ought not to be desperate to accept one, Rosenthal opines. Keuchel will be eligible for arbitration for the first time this offseason and is already set for a significant payout in 2016, one that would only increase if he wins the Cy Young award. On top of that, it’s extremely unlikely that the Astros would non-tender him the following offseason, so he has already nearly guaranteed himself two years of good salaries.

If you honestly think the Phillies don’t know what their doing with Amaro, I got some prime real estate/swamp land for ya for sale. Phillies are notorious for acting like information is national security

We all know hes going to get the boot, the question is whos going to take over.
I’d imagine the interest should be huge in the Phils’ GM job.
It has a top 10 farm system, a huge market and after 2016 has what, Matt Harrison’s 13M on the books? I believe someone called the Phillies organization a future “gold mine.”

The phillies have the choice to buy on free agents in the offseason but I doubt that happens.

And whoever spends for those potential FAs will be the new GM.

I hope Amaro is out next year, they need a new gm that will change the culture in philly and make them a winner again.

I think they will spend in the Pen and one Starting Pitcher that’s not in the Top four or Five. However, I think their View is a Young Free Agent like Jason Hayward might fit their Long term projections.

Don’t be so such about that. Amaro has done a nice job the last couple years and has rebuilt a barren system. We all get better at our jobs and progress as the years go. It’s not impossible for Ruben to do the same.

You haven’t been watching Philly for the last few seasons if you believe “Amaro has done a nice job the last couple of years.” He provided almost zero starting pitching to support Hamels. The Philadelphia bullpen has been awful outside of Papelbon and Giles. The team sat on Utley and Rollins too long and got precious little in exchange when they were worth far more two years ago. All of the talent that arrived at the end of July was clearly engineered by MacPhail and Gillick as Amaro has shown zero talent in making good deals. He’s gone.

You obviously haven’t been paying attention to the returns he’s received from the trades. The Rollins deal is looking very solid as Eflin looks like a 3/4.
You can sit there and criticize him all you want, but I think it’s funny how many people will crush him for every bad move he’s made and then discredit him for the good ones. The fact is that Monty pushed the Howard deal. Ruben made the calls and put together packages on these recent deals (Byrd, Rollins, Utley, Hamels). On top of that, he’s done a nice job drafting (especially with high picks).
It’s not the worst thing in the world if he stays. Remember, the team this year wasn’t supposed to be good and their focus this year was developing AA talent which they obviously did. Future is bright.

If you believe Amaro engineered those deadline deals in July, more power to you. Based on the amount of interference that’s gone on in the Phillies front office over the last few years I have zero confidence that he’s the one who put those packages together. Deals like that have Andy MacPhail’s fingerprints all over them. Amaro had two years to do a similar deal for Hamels and got zilch accomplished.

If the angels miss the post season, they need to clean house and bring in a whole new coaching staff except for dino, I would either let him or bud black be the manager. then find a good pitching coach, I would make tim salmon the hitting coach.

Eppler is either crazy or desperate to leave NYY. He really doesn’t know what will be waiting for him in Anaheim if he gets the LAA’s GM job: An owner in Arturo Moreno who is very impulsive and known for making baseball decisions disregarding the GM’s opinions/views; and a Manager in Mike Scioscia who has gathered so much power through his 16 years at the helm, that everything he says has to be taken as “gospel” -or he will get you fired-. Mr. Eppler should heed what happened to Jerry Dipoto, a sensible and smart GM who rather quit his job than put up and accept Scioscia & Co mandate.
