SATURDAY: Martinez has a shoulder strain and will miss the rest of the season, the Cardinals have announced. Martinez will also miss the postseason. He will not have surgery, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch tweets.
FRIDAY: Cardinals righty Carlos Martinez left his start against the Brewers tonight after throwing just seven pitches. The team has announced that Martinez has right shoulder tightness and that his departure from the game was precautionary. He will receive an MRI tomorrow, manager Mike Matheny said.
Martinez was visibly in pain after that seventh pitch, turning his shoulder awkwardly and stepping off the mound. He then covered his face with his glove as he walked off the field. His average fastball velocity this year has been over 95 MPH, but none of his pitches tonight topped 93 MPH.
At this point in the season, losing Martinez for any significant period of time would be unfortunate for the Cardinals. Like most of the rest of the Cards’ starters, Martinez has been terrific this year. He has a 3.01 ERA, 9.2 K/9, 3.1 BB/9 and an excellent 54.7% ground ball rate in 179 1/3 innings, and he’s emerged as one of the National League’s top young starters.
stay classy
Real classy.
Hopefully you’re done for the year.
Hopefully just fatigue, he does have almost three weeks to rest until game 3 of NLDS. Has thrown 70 more innings then last season
Certainly hope you’re right, but he appeared to be showing discomfort as he left the field. his extreme innings increase is a concern. Hopefully he and Waino will be available out of the pen in October.
There’s a reason why you try to take precautions with a first time starter and put in place innings limits. It’s not an exact science, but making a kid throw more than 150 innings his first season increasing the risk for something to go wrong. Especially if his body is not used to the work load.
As of now, the Pirates are 2.5 games back of the Cards. They’ve got a three game series against them coming up, and Martinez would have pitched in that series if he weren’t hurt. Instead, they will likely be starting . . . Tyler Lyons? Or Marco Gonzalez? Amazing to think that the division title is in jeopardy after the Cards had such a secure lead for so long.
It’s really not that hard to believe. They have had devastating injuries that would have crippled most teams with top talents being injured. If anything it shows just how deep the Cards org really is. Let’s not forget they lost one of the best prospects in the game in the off season. RIP Taveras
Even as a Pirates fan, I have to acknowledge this is bad news for the Cardinals.
I am amazed that they have so many injuries this year to Wainwright, Adams, Molina, Holliday, but they still have the best record in baseball.
It shows the importance of building depth from within.
Should be 3 weeks tops with a strained shoulder
I assume you have seen the MRI and know the medical history of Mr. Martinez as you have come up with your expert medical opinion here. Just have to smh, Considering the pain that Mr. Martinez was in when he left the game, I think that it is a little more than just a mild strain. Not seeing the tests, I do not know. Thinking the Cards will be cautious as they do not want to lose Mr. Martinez for all of 2016. No guarantees that Mr. Wainwright will be dominate again. Prob will be but no idea as needs his lower body 100% and trusting that it is 100% to pitch the way he has in the past. Hopfully you are just being optimistic and not thinking any less of Mr, Martinez with your commment.
