The Phillies finally moved star lefty Cole Hamels at the trade deadline, ending a long saga in which the organization was often criticized for waiting to act. But as MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki reports, Philadelphia’s front office feels that it accomplished what it set out to do in dealing Hamels, as well as Jonathan Papelbon and Ben Revere. “This was as well prepared as we’ve been,” said GM Ruben Amaro Jr. “There were no shortage of suitors, and when you’re talking about five or six teams to cover all those players and all those prospects … we started to target some of those guys during the offseason. The scouting and the addition of the analytics portion of these evaluations put us in the best position to be ready to make the trades.” The club sought to balance the desire for quality with the need to add a number of young players with promising outlooks, and outgoing president Pat Gillick praised the job of Amaro and his staff. “He did an excellent job,” said Gillick. “He’s going to do things in a professional manner. He’s going to do things he thinks are in the Phils’ best interest. People might think he’s doing something to save his job, but I’ve always said I have confidence in him that he’s going to carry out his responsibilities in a professional manner.”
Here’s more from the National League:
- The Marlins seem to have finally diagnosed the underlying issue that has sidelined righty Jarred Cosart for long stretches this year, MLB.com’s Joe Frisaro reports. Cosart, a significant trade acquisition last summer, has a disorder in his inner ear that has caused him difficulties with his balance. It’s not hard to imagine how significant an impact that may have had on the 25-year-old, who has struggled this year. The hope is that he’ll be able to receive treatment to ameliorate the issue and return to the bump later this year.
- After being shipped from Miami to the Dodgers, starter Mat Latos will be pitching both to help drive Los Angeles into the post-season and to set himself up for free agency. As Steve Dilbeck of the Los Angeles Times writes, Latos has confirmed that early-season knee issues were a huge factor in his struggles. Since having his knee inflammation rained and undergoing a strength regimen to improve it, Latos says he’s noticed a vast improvement. “I got with the right people,” he said. “They put me on the right program and I’ve stuck with it. I think the results have showed. … Imagine having a lot of fluid in your knee, a lot of pain. That’s my landing foot, so I’m putting all my weight shifted onto that knee. It’s allowed me to clear over my front side and drive the ball down. My velocity has gone up.” Set to hit the open market in advance of his age-28 season, Latos will certainly present an interesting free agent case, especially if he can continue to put up top-of-the-rotation numbers in his new home and put the injury and performance concerns further in the background.
- Another recent deadline mover, new Cardinals slugger Brandon Moss, says he’s very happy with where he ended up, as MLB.com’s David Cobb reports. “I feel really blessed to have the opportunity to be here,” he said. “There’s 28 places I could have gone if I was going to be traded and to be able to come here, I’ve said it a few times, it’s like winning the lottery.”
Portland Micro-Brewers
Ruben Amaro seems to be talking up how hard his job is. I’m sure it’s very stressful and demanding but to act like he was against the clock is silly. He should have started laying the groundwork for a Hamels trade in 2012-2013 offseason. It’s also good for Philly fans to see him acknowledge that he needs analytics. It’s worth big investments if only to understand how other teams value players. Am I wrong for thinking he dragged his feet long and hard on advanced stats? It seems like only a few years ago he was downplaying their necessity or importance,

It was like winning the lottery when we traded Moss for Kaminsky.

I was shocked when I saw that deal. A very un-Cardinals-like move to make.

Lots of discussion and speculation on that deal on another post

I think the Cards understand their window may be closing. Lot of older players on that team and some younger players nearing FA. Then you have the Cubs and Pirates getting really good while being really young.
stl_cards16 2
Who are these younger players nearing free agency? Heyward and Lackey are the only meaningful pieces on the team that are free agents over the next few years.
cookiemonster
matt holliday? guess he is not meaningful. add in peralta, yadi, wainwright should begin to experience to decline.
vtadave
None of those guys are young by any means.
willreily
Sure, maybe some decline. but when you still have Grichuk, Piscotty, Wong, Adams, Martinez, Wacha, Gonzales as a young core you won’t have that sharp of a decline. Then add in the fact that they draft very well, and just signed a TV deal that will bring in extra payroll muscle. I have a hard time seeing their window closing, and even if there is a decline, it won’t be for long.
Vandals Took The Handles
Carpenter has plenty of years left, and he has become a part of the leadership infrastructure with Yadi, Wainwright and Holliday. The Cardinals know it’s not fantasy baseball. THey expect to wn and expect to play the game correctly. Carlos is starting now. The older guys will take on less, the younger guys will take on more. It’s the Cardinals way. They’ve only had one back-to-back losing season in over 50 years. They are not going to fall apart anytime soon.
cookiemonster
you count matt adams as a core piece an average 1bman.? grichuk is running a 382 babip, with a higher obp than he ever had in the minors. piscotty is bat only. carlos martinez is at a career high in innings and outperforming his fip. gonzales has not looked good this year at all. wacha has never thrown a full season. wong is by far the best piece. i don’t trust those pitchers holding up at all.
willreily
Yeah well if you take certain areas and hone in on what a player does wrong, you can find anything. And plus you are talking this year. I’m talking long term. Sure some of the players can fade out, but with all those players being that young I’d say its a safe bet at least 3-4 of them will be solid contributing players for a long time coming. Also I never said core means impact player. It just means a player that could be a key for the future.
And what you said about pitcher could apply to all pitchers, or any prospects in general. I don’t think it’s smart to judge any one player on one season. You’d have to look at their tools. Wacha Martinez and Gonzales all have plus stuff, and a majority of scouts agree their stuff could be mid-top of the rotation stuff. Wong has pop and is at least average defensively, which is good for a 2B. Grichuk has great power and solid speed, and while he may not stay in CF, he still has a place in the outfield.
Also, Kaminsky being traded has no barring on the fate of the franchise. Cardinals still have Jack Flaherty, Luke Weaver and Alex Reyes as pitching prospects. Not the best in the game, but still nothing to sneeze at.

People have been saying the window may be closing since 2006. Cardinals are set up to compete for years and years. Good move for the Indians, I guess we’ll see how it ends up being for us.

When I posted young players nearing FA, I just was including Heyward…however I still believe the Cards only have a year or 2 leading that division before they are 3rd best. Im not saying that they will be 62-100…but a .500 team. Besides Martinez, Wacha, and Wong, I am not sold on all the younger players in the organization. Granite new tv deal will probably bring in good FA’s
wongpitchwongtime
I’m not sold on all the younger players either, I think our farm system is much weaker than it has been in a very long time but I still see the Cards being a premier team for a long time. Pirates will see decline faster than we will, but the Cubs are looking like the team of the future.

Cards resemble a niche market old school Braves type organization. Boy did they make out well in a few drafts

28 not 29?

Does Moss have a no trade clause to one team or something?
davE 36
I think he’s assuming he wouldn’t go to Oakland since they just traded him last winter
