An update some some notable players who will be joining or leaving the disabled list…
- C.C. Sabathia lasted just 2 2/3 innings in today’s start before leaving due to pain in his right knee. The veteran lefty will at least be shut down for a while, though Yankees GM Brian Cashman told reporters (including MLB.com’s Grace Raynor) that he presumed Sabathia will need a DL stint “just because he walked off the field without even throwing another pitch.” Sabathia underwent surgery on that same knee in 2014 and has been bothered by pain for much of this season, which could partially explain his rough 5.24 ERA over 135 2/3 innings. The Yankees had planned to expand to a six-man rotation upon Michael Pineda’s impending return from the DL, though those plans are on hold with Sabathia sidelined.
- The Orioles announced that shortstop J.J. Hardy has been placed on the 15-day DL with a left groin injury, and he’ll undergo an MRI on Monday to determine the severity of the injury. Hardy, who also missed all of April with a strained shoulder, has hit only .220/.251/.313 in 353 plate appearances this season, his first under a three-year, $40MM extension signed last October. Ryan Flaherty will likely handle shortstop duties while Hardy is out, though the O’s also have Paul Janish at Triple-A.
- The Mets plan to activate David Wright from the disabled list prior to Monday’s game against the Phillies. Southpaw Dario Alvarez has been optioned to Triple-A to make room for Wright on the active roster, ESPN’s Adam Rubin reports. Wright was originally placed on the DL in April with a strained hamstring but he was discovered to have the much more serious condition known as spinal stenosis.

Disasterous re-signing of CC after he opted out. I suppose the Yankees felt they had no choice, but an extremely expensive mistake

Yes, but his new contract only added one more year.. Plus, the way he was pitching anyone would have signed him.. He was a ticking time bomb being a 300 lb pitcher but at the time he was worth it..

Hardy was pretty much #Worthless all year.
He is slow.
His approach at the plate was very discouraging
I have #NoSympathy for him!
That extension that they gave was inexcusable because he had lingering back problems all last year and for whatever reason DD and Showalter just could not wait to re-sign him
#SMH!

It’s true that his numbers are way down this year, but Gold Glove-winning shortstops with plus power don’t exactly grow on trees. He’s trying to play through the pain and it’s killing him at the plate. Hardy has bounced back from bad seasons before and he may do it again. I wouldn’t be so quick to dump on him.

CC’s knee problems are very, very serious, he’s essentially dealing with bone-on-bone at this point. He literally just had a cortisone shot after his last start purely to relieve pain from wear and tear rather than alleviate pain from it being drained, and he walked off today because he couldn’t take the pain anymore. That shot would be his 3rd this season, which from what I’ve come to understand, is pretty much the max people normally get within the span he has. I don’t expect to see him pitch again this year. Beyond that will depend on just how far it’ll be pushed, there’s only so much you can do in his case short of knee replacement.

I agree with you that the knee problems are serious. Being a lhp all of his weight comes down on that right knee/leg.
I appreciate the effort he has put in to make himself able to pitch. Sure, a lot of people will say that he’s getting paid millions to do it, and he absolutely is, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t appreciate how hard he has worked.
CC has always been a big boy. I vividly remember one of his quotes “fat don’t sprain”. But since this surgery he has shown complete focus and devotion to his craft. Post surgery, he dropped 30 some pounds. Anyone who has had knee surgery knows how crazy that is because most of us put on weight. He changed everything about how he conducted his daily life, worked hard to cut weight and still try and get stronger – that takes dedication.
Further he went out there and pitched when we needed him to – although it wasn’t as good as we’d like – but he would go out there for a few hours every few days and have to deal with sharp shooting pain. Pain that lasts for days after, that cort shots can’t alleviate. Not many of us knows what that feels like. I for one appreciate what he has been willing to do. How many of us are willing to change just about everything in out lives and deal with immense physical pain that lingers for days, and be bashed by media for not being as good as we used to be, for our jobs and the guys we work with. He could have retired, it’s not like he needed the next pay check to pay the cell phone or electric bill, but the He didn’t wNt to let the Yankees down, and I appreciate him for that.

I’m glad these details haven’t entirely been lost. Most people see what he’s doing and just assume they see a guy holding on for too long just to keep collecting that next paycheck, but there really has been a genuine effort to do everything he can to not let everyone down and hold up his end of the deal. That’s why I just can’t bring myself to say anything bad about the guy, he’s a grinder. He always has been, it’s who he is and he takes pride in that. He hasn’t been able to return to that prior form, but with all of the pain he’s going through, that can’t be a shocker.
