Yankees Notes: Ackley, Pineda, Williams, Gregorius

By Steve Adams | August 4, 2015 at 5:13pm CDT

The Yankees placed Dustin Ackley on the disabled list today due to a lumbar strain in his back. Ackley’s collected just three plate appearances since coming over from the Mariners in a trade, but Yankees GM Brian Cashman told reporters, including MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch (Twitter link) that he has no issues with the Mariners. Ackley was healthy at the time of the trade, said Cashman, who expects the outfielder to miss about 20 to 30 days.

More on the Yankees…

  • Also from Cashman (and also via Hoch), right-hander Michael Pineda won’t pitch in a Major League game in the month of August. The team is hopeful that Pineda, who hit the disabled list with a forearm strain shortly before the trade deadline, will return to the big league mound in September.
  • Hoch tweets that outfield prospect Mason Williams, who made his Major League debut with the Yankees this season, will have season-ending shoulder surgery on Friday. Formerly a consensus Top 100 prospect, Williams’ star has faded in recent years, but he put himself back on the Yankees’ radar in 2015 with a .318/.397/.398 batting line between Double-A and Triple-A this season. Though he hasn’t homered in the minors at all this season, he did homer in the Majors before landing on the disabled list. In eight games with the Yankees, he hit .286/.318/.571. Williams will accrue 116 days of Major League service time this season by virtue of his time spent on the 60-day DL.
  • The Yankees’ patience with Didi Gregorius is beginning to pay off, writes George A. King III of the New York Post. Though Gregorius batted just .221/.283/.297 through the season’s first two months, he’s now batting .291/.330/.396 since June 1 and playing solid defense at shortstop. “When we got him I spoke about his ability but that he was not a finished product,” said Cashman. “There were going to be growing pains, and we were forced to be patient. You hope your patience pays dividends. We are seeing that.” The Yankees picked up Gregorius in a three-team deal that sent Shane Greene to the Tigers.

Williams and Heathcott.. Two players that will always be known as what if’s.. The injury bug hurt 2 players who could have silenced critics of the Yankees farm system the last couple of years..

Williams is only 23 and Heathcott is only 24.

I understood your point, and I’m just saying there is still plenty of time for them to come up, whether it’s on the Yankees or another team should they get traded or released, to have an impact in the bigs.

“Yankees GM Brian Cashman told reporters, including MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch (Twitter link) that he has no issues with the Mariners”

Lol. I laughed at this. I remember when they wouldn’t trade Cliff Lee to them and the Yankees got pissed. All he had to give up was EEEEEduardo Nunez (in addition to Montero who was a top prospect at the time and others).

Then of course Pineda got injured shortly after he got traded here. Watch something happen to Cano and the M’s ship him back here and the Yankees will blame the Mariners.

Cano does have a health issue currently, correct? Was it immune or vision?

I have not heard that. I wouldn’t think it’s vision though.

A two starter swing? You mean with Pineda down and unfortunately CC continuing to start for whatever reason?

Well hopefully for the Yankees, Severino has a big impact too. Never know. Too bad it’s not him vs. Owens tonight or tomorrow.

Until he gets injured which very sadly can happen any time given his history and now playing on the turf.

its probably going to take a major injury to keep Tulo out of the lineup. I dunno the timing of Tulo’s injuries in Colorado but its a lot easier to say ya I can’t go when your team is basically out of the playoffs on july 1st. the jays do need to get rid of the turf though. it looks awful the seam’s are so visible it looks like there is 14 extension cords bundled up under the seams.

Wanna know what makes me sad? In terms of WAR, Didi would be tied with… wait for it.. Jeanmar Gomez with 1.4 WAR as the 2nd best active player on the Phillies roster, trailing only Aaron Harang (1.7), and yet Yankee fans for months were complaining about Didi. Gotta love being a Phillies fan right now.

Except the pressure is on with Toronto, and he lasted 6 games… and is OPS’ing over 1.000 in those 6 games, and is worth 0.7 WAR.. in 6 games.. for the Jays.

Here the thing with Tulo, though… He’s hands down the best SS in the game when healthy. He’ll put up amazing WAR even barely cracking 110 games played….but he HAS to be on the field for Toronto in this race. He has long and recurring injury concerns. He could beat the cover off the ball for a week or a month and then miss all of Sept and the postseason. I know the WAR is impressive no matter how you slice it…but timing is crucial now.
