The Dodgers have promoted top infield prospect Jose Peraza, who will make his big-league debut while starting at second base tonight, Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times tweets. Regular Dodgers second baseman Howie Kendrick left Sunday’s game after injuring himself while running the bases. He had an MRI on his hamstring today, and the team has announced that it has placed him on the 15-day DL. Manager Don Mattingly said yesterday that he expected Kendrick to miss significant time.
The 21-year-old Peraza only recently joined the Dodgers organization, having arrived from the Braves in the massive three-team Mat Latos / Hector Olivera deal. He was hitting .302/.327/.398 in 469 Triple-A plate appearances this year.
MLB.com ranks Peraza the No. 29 prospect in the game, praising his excellent speed — Peraza has little power and doesn’t walk much but has been an effective offensive player in the minors thanks largely to his ability to run out hits and to his baserunning. He has 204 stolen bases in the equivalent of about three full seasons’ worth of minor league plate appearances. Baseball America ranked Peraza the No. 54 prospect in baseball heading into the season.
yarritsblake
This could be interesting. Yes I know he has tons of speed, but the kid is also only 21, and doesn’t need the pressure of batting lead-off right off the bat. Maybe bat him 7th, ahead of Joc, to give someone who Joc could drive in from the bottom of the order to start, then move him to batting lead-off. Lord knows we need speed in this lineup.
mrshyguy99
well the dodgers do have speed joc and puig just arent showing theirs
mrshyguy99
well this should be fun to see. i wounder if this mean less playing time for Rollins
yarritsblake
Its more a move because of the Howie Kendrick injury. Nothing to do with Rollins who has actually been playing decently as of late (hitting .306 through 8 August games so far).
williamg
what does peraza taking over for howie maybe for a while have to do with rollins at ss?
mrshyguy99
well i didnt see that part before i made the comment
Donnie B
Time to trade for Chase Utley, get the DP combo of Rollins/Utley back.
mrshyguy99
why would they need utley unless howie injury is serious
phillyphanatics
Geez Jeremy maybe you should read the whole mlbtr article before commenting, what, 4 times?!?
blake
Kike can play 2B, and now Peraza, so there’s no need for another washed up Philly. yeah, Rollins is working out……as did Michael Young and Shane Victorino…..the cryin Hawaiian.
blake
Is this the real Donnie M disguised as Donnie B?
mrshyguy99
so dodgers trade dee gordon and then trade for Peraza who pretty much gordon 2.0.
Brixton
Because Gordon was universally expected to regress, and they got a great return for him.
Peraza they basically stole. They have up a few fringe prospects and Olivera for Peraza, Wood, Latos and Johnson.
mrshyguy99
i just find it funny they trade one guy then get pretty much the same kind of guy later on. dodgers wouldnt need a speed guy if only joc and puig us their speed more.
Cam
It’s all about the bits in between. I’d trade burgers with someone if it meant I’m getting a side of fries with it too.
thecoffinnail
What’s funny about getting a top prospect as a throw in on a trade? Atlanta has Olivera, Simmons, and Peterson locking down 3rd, ss, and 2nd respectively.. Where was Peraza going to play in Atlanta? New York expressed serious interest in him earlier in the year.. So, why not give him a cup of coffee in the majors while Howie is out and then trade him to the Yankees in the offseason for some of their solid bullpen pieces (can probably get their 2nd base prospect Refsnyder and flip him too) after LA resigns Kendrick? Yeah, that makes no sense.. Plus, more comparisons have been made with Peraza to Altuve than Gordon..
BJ Nick
Peraza is similar, but he is definitely not the same as Gordon. For one thing, his stolen base success rate – at least in the minors- is far superior to Dee, who had a very poor success rate. And it’s not that much better this year either. So all of those stolen bases look great, but they can wind up costing the team in the long run. Also, Peraza is outstanding defensively, which Gordon was not, the reports are that he has improved this year, and good for him. But Peraza is really slick out there, both at second base and short.
BlueSkyLA
The deal was basically Gordon for Kendrick. That exchange had a lot of appeal for a defense-oriented FO. Turns out though that the Peraza pickup could be one of the best timed of the season for the Dodgers if Kendrick is out for more than a few days.
Acuña Matata
I’d agree with the stolen part if it wasn’t for the Comp Pick. Also, as always, you can never have enough pitching. Woods is losing mph we all know it. Johnson is being lit up but he’ll be fine. Latos, who knows. Peraza was on the block the second Jace was named starting 2b. So a cheap Olivera + your perceived fringe prospects + a Comp Pick (so 2 top 40 picks in ’16). Oh yeah and the Dodgers gave the Braves a $500k tip for Bronson Arroyo.
BlueSkyLA
Maybe he was universally expected to regress by everyone but the Marlins. For sure things fans say here and universality aren’t the same.
Cam
Starting over Kike? Ugh.
Ray Ray
I understand the pronunciation and the meaning is different than the slur, but that nickname really offends me. Couldn’t they spell it Kique or something? Just imagine if a Latin player used the Spanish word for black as a nickname. It’s basically the same thing when read.
Jorge Soler Powered
Uh oh, its the PC Police!
petfoodfella
It’s different. Get your panties untied.
BJ Nick
Oh please. I grew up Jewish and that didn’t even occur to me.
BlueSkyLA
To me either, but it will be hard to forget now, won’t it?
blake
Kike, prouncounced KEE-Kay, is the nickname for Enrique, like Bob is the nickname for Robert, or Bill is the nickname for William. Other languages have nicknames also, not just the English language.
Drewnasty
I still don’t understand how LAD pulled off this trade. Hey so we want this cheap SP and one of your top prospects. The return? This unproven Cuban guy as the center piece.
Cam
Off the back of what they did to Preller & the Pads, Freidman & co are justifying the hype.
Taking Kemp and his salary out of left field, plus putting Grandal behind the plate, continues to make me giddy.
John Hawkins
That the Dodgers have already paid 15 million dollars. It was a good trade for Atlanta and LA.
satan
He better get on base better then he did in the minors. I don’t anticipate a hot start. No pun intended
wesbraves
You dodger fans are crazy. We gave up wood who has already a tj under his belt and with his delivery will have another just how soon, peraza who is a speedy contact hitter nothing more(if yall woulda got Albies I would be upset) who’s obp is slightly above his avg, a reliever who’s on a contract year and avilan who is decent. Not as good a package as you might think.
Now we got o, I’ve never seen him play but I know he was hitting like .380 or something in the minors 100 points higher than peraza, that you guys gave 60mil to so you guys must have seen something and the fact we offered him 40 mil says he must be a special player, paco who is a decent rp, bird?, you took 10mil from aroyo contract but the thing that will swing the deal in our favor very well could be the comp pick if we turn that pick into to trout or king Felix its a no brainer but even if the pick turns into a allstar but not top of the position player it will still be pretty sweet for the bravos! Go Braves
peyton
Holy run on sentence batman
wesbraves
Sorry Peyton I was never really good at English or word structure
BJ Nick
Wes, thanks for being honest. You know what, just don’t be afraid to put periods in there and let sentences end, and start another one.
BJ Nick
Hey, at least he has one comma in there!
vtadave
Hard to know where to start there.
Wood had TJ surgery right after his senior year in High School. Kind of removed from that.
Peraza is also an excellent defender with a fair amount of speedl
Paco is rarely healthy for an extended period of time.
Bird is a C-level prospect.
You aren’t turning a comp pick into King Felix or Mike Trout.
Olivera is hitting .380 in AAA…in 31 at-bats. He’s also sporting an elbow that could blow at any moment, is on the DL now for another injury, and he’s already 30.
Find one credible analyst who doesn’t think the Dodgers didn’t get a steal here.
satan
He doesn’t get on base, not impressed
wesbraves
If anyone but Harper was in right last night the probably catch the fly that was a triple or atleast stop it on a bounce for a single.
Harper is in LA so he was posing for pics while peraza was hitting, he def could have been 0 for 4
wesbraves
I can’t wait to see who was the real winner of this trade turns out to be.
We all know who the Real loser is already (fish)
