SATURDAY:Ā The Padres have pulled Kimbrel back from revocable waivers, Rosenthal reports (TwitterĀ links). That meansĀ that, as expected, KimbrelĀ will not be traded. The Mets are known to be trying to acquire a reliever they claimed on revocable waivers, but it’s not Kimbrel. Rosenthal writes that six teams claimed Kimbrel, but the Mets were not one of the six.
FRIDAY:Ā Padres closer Craig Kimbrel has been claimed on revocable waivers by an unknown club, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (Twitter link). However, a club official tells Rosenthal that the Padres have no intention of trading Kimbrel.
Kimbrel is earning $9MM in 2015 as part of a four-year, $42MM contract extension signed with the Braves, and he’s owed about $1.87MM of that sum through season’s end. He’s owed $25MM on top of that sum through the 2017 season, including a $1MM buyout on a $13MM club option for the 2018 season.
After a rocky start to the season in which Kimbrel posted a 5.93 ERA through his first 15 appearances, Kimbrel has been characteristically outstanding. Since May 16, Kimbrel has a 1.73 ERA with a 49-to-13 K/BB ratio in 36 1/3 innings and collecting 26 saves in 27 opportunities.
Acquired in a stunning blockbuster trade on the eve of Opening Day, Kimbrel came to the Padres alongside Melvin Upton Jr. in exchange for outfield prospect Jordan Paroubeck, right-hander Matt Wisler, a Competitive Balance (Round A) Draft Pick and the contracts of Cameron Maybin and Carlos Quentin (the latter of whom was immediately designated for assignment and released). Kimbrel drew significant interest prior to the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, but GM A.J. Preller elected to hold onto the four-time All-Star and former Rookie of the Year.

D’Backs, Cubs or Dodgers? Has to be one of them.
D’Backs had interest in Chapman, plus it would block the Dodgers from getting him.
Cubs were connected earlier and he would deepen their pen drastically.
Dodgers.. well.. hes an expensive closer that won’t require them to part one of their top 4 prospects in Holmes, DeLeon, Seager or Urias. They need BP help.
jakesaub
Or the Red Sox, they had some interest at the deadline and their bullpen is putrid at best.
Brixton
Highly doubt he made it that far on waivers, but if for some reason he did, it could work.

Hope someone can answer this question: what is the point of putting a player on revocable waivers when the team has no intention of trading him?
Grey Suit
See who is interested in him and have the flexibility to trade him if a team is desperate and is willing to overpay.
BlueSkyLA
You might think so, but the “no intention” part of the formula seems to negate this theory.
go_jays_go
Sometimes the team is still willing to acquire the player in the off-season.
BlueSkyLA
And how does placing the player on revocable waivers with no intention of trading him during the season change the teams that will be interested in trading for him in the off-season? It just doesn’t make a lot of sense. This is part of the game within a game that fans are never going to know a lot about.

A nice test for AJ Preller to see if he’s any good at front-officing. Get a good offer (quality pieces) for Kimbrel, TAKE IT!
Brixton
He got a good offer from the Yanks at the deadline. (Jorge Mateo+)
Math&Baseball
That wasn’t a good offer that was a low ball offer. Mateo was the center piece and he’s only in A ball and has been the past 3 years. They offered players years away in return for Kimbrel and some of gyorkos contract.
Had the Yankees taken Upton Jr or Gyorkos contract along with Kimbrel they’d have taken the lesser deal for financial flexibility. However, since the Yankees only offered to take some salary on they had to offer more than just Mateo which they did not. The Yankees essentially wanted to offer a package for half the commitment to a bad contract that would be acceptable for full committment to a bad contract.

I don’t know if the offer formally even happened or not, but really, that isn’t a lowball offer. Mateo is a pretty nice piece, maybe not a headliner alone without something else of worth just yet, but he’s got top 100 type talent and may start hitting those lists in the next year. Also, you’re using the terms “some” or “half of”, when it was reported they were willing to take on a significant amount of that deal, never heard terms that made it seem like a small chunk. All things considered, that’s not really that bad of a deal. I don’t blame them for not excepting, but I don’t think it deserves to be labeled a lowball.
Math&Baseball
Getting Kimbrel and Upton Jr cost the Padres a top prospect in Wisler.
If you even get half that value back in a Kimbrel bad contract trade the Yankees offer wasn’t half.
Mateo is a good piece but they’d have to throw in double A or triple A players as well- players who are close to contributing.
Not saying Severino or Judge, but maybe a JR Murohy Mateo package for Kimbrel since they have Gary Sanchez.

First of all, JR Murphy last time I checked was a major league catcher, not some double or triple a job as you remarked above. And, probably better than anything the Pad’s have at this time.
Secondly, your Rock Star GM makes a bad trade in your estimation and gets rid of “Wisler”…boo! hoo! You pay the price when you make a bad trade. You also have to give to get, a concept the Yankees understand. Mateo, may be in the low minors but I’ll tell you this. If the Yankees value him that highly he’s better than anything the Padres have in their system.
Math&Baseball
1. I said Murphy and Mateo simply for Kimbrel. I did not say Kimbrel and a bad contract for that. I did say Kimbrel and a bad contract for Mateo and a double triple a player.
2. JR Murphy isn’t better than Derrick Norris. He’s certainly not as defensively capable as Austin Hedges is either. Norris has better OBP and SLG than Murphy does career wise.
Hedges has played in 20 less games and has better DWar, hedges has caught 35% of stealers Murphy has caught 26%
3. LOL Yankees value him so he’s better than what the Padres have. They also valued Kei Igawa more than the Padres did at one point too.
Math&Baseball
Also, have you seen Wisler pitch this year? He’s not showing his top prospect status at all. Preller sold high on Wisler who’s sporting an xFIP 4.89 in 12 starts this season and an era of 5.43.
You probably should look up stats before commenting next time. They countered pretty much everything you said.
bruinsfan94 2
I wouldnt say that Mateo is a good centerpiece at this time.

PLEASE be the Dodgers
mrnatewalter
No way the Giants would allow that to happen.

Sure hope it is the Cubs, the desperately need a good reliever. Rodney certainly will be no help.

It makes absolutely zero sense for the Padres to hang on to Kimbrel. They’re not going to be competitive for several more years anyway. They have a washed up Kemp, a rental in Upton and and James Shields who is a mere shadow of his former self. They should just trade for whatever they can get. But with the overinflated ego that is Preller, that’s impossible.
go_jays_go
The Padres’ ownership group could be forcing Preller to (not) be making moves.
Math&Baseball
Cause kemp hitting .266 with 14 homers is washed up type production.
And shields sporting an xFIP around 3.5 definitely screams shadow of his former self with higher K numbers this year than he had in KC.
Kimbrel is under team control for 3 more years. Only takes 1 desperate team to pull the trigger. Look at the Blue Jays. You think if they’re fighting for a WC next year they won’t try to add Kimbrel? They underperform a lot it seems and make big trades to try and patch things.
rsski69
These are the type of moves Dombrowski better get on…adding Kinbrel, Chapman moving Clay to the Pen…..because he will never give you 200 innings and stay healthy but he can pitch 70 innings as a closer or set up man with great success. Finally add Kelly to the Pen. Now we have a winning pen that shortens games and Clay along with Kelly can spot start as need.
Johnny Shoe
We know he didn’t get out of the NL. The Padres can get a decent haul this off season if they decide to trade him, but I think they’re going to have to get absolutely blown away to deal him.
The prospects that were traded for Kimbrel aren’t looking great for the Braves, but people don’t mention that. This trade is a defining one for Preller.
