Daniel Norris’ career as a Tiger got off a fantastic start today as the newly-acquired left-hander held the Orioles to one run in 7 1/3 innings work. Norris allowed four hits and a walk while striking out five to earn the victory. Here’s more from around the AL Central…
- Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski is confident that last week’s trades have replenished the club’s reserves of young talent, Chris Iott of MLive.com writes. Â “We changed the outlook of our organization at the upper levels, which we needed to do,” Dombrowski said of the trades as a whole. “We have traded so many guys in the past. Ideally, you don’t want to be in this position. But based on where we were, we think this gives us an influx of guys who can help us going into next year. It puts us in a good spot going into next year.“
- The Indians’ acquisition of pitching prospect Rob Kaminsky from the Cardinals for Brandon Moss was the best trade deadline deal of any team over the last week, Fangraphs’ David Laurila opines. Jim Callis of MLB.com (on Twitter) is similarly effusive about the deal for the Tribe, calling it “a flat out heist for” Cleveland.
- Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer addresses some moves that the Indians made and didn’t make at the deadline as part of a reader mailbag. Of note, Hoynes says the Tribe didn’t plan to pick up David Murphy’s contract option for 2016 and that the Carlos Carrasco trade talks “were window shopping for future reference” rather than a concerted effort to trade the right-hander.
- Jeff Samardzija remained focused on pitching while trade rumors swirled around him, so the righty said not much has changed for him in remaining with the White Sox, MLB.com’s Scott Merkin writes. Samardzija is excited about Chicago’s recent play and hopes they can keep building towards a late-season playoff push.

Congrats Norris, hopefully this is the first of many on his new team. It was really painful to lose him but I’m going to root for him no matter where he goes. Overall great guy and he’ll always be one of my favorites

Smarz got lit up by the Yankees so called weak offense anyway.

Who called the Yankees offense weak? If this was before the season, I understand, but who called it weak now?

Trading Rob Kaminsky for Moss was such a bad move by the usually good judgement Cardinals. I don’t how they couldn’t have done better if Kaminsky was on the table. Adam Lind could of been had for him.
Vandals Took The Handles
1. Brandon Moss got the walk-off hit today.
2. The Cardinals seem to come out just fine on trades when the smoke clears.
3. How do you know that the Brewers would have made that trade?
Brixton
1. Thats not going to happen everyday
2. Not always
3. Because they took a lesser prospect for Parra who is arguably having a better season
Vandals Took The Handles
1. The Cardinals do not expect that to happen everyday. Neither does anyone else that follows baseball.
2. The Cardinals track record on trades under Mo is extremely good.
3. How do you know how the Brewers valued Kaminsky and how the Cardinals valued Lind?
One other thing – as noted in another article comment below, it is obvious to me that much of the media plays favorites with teams. For instance, it seems the Indians are darlings – with many picking them to finish 1st in the ALC – including one major publication saying that they would go to the Word Series this year. Meanwhile, the same people were picking the Royals to finish 4th in the ALC. Currently the Royals are running away with the ALC, and the Indians are in 5th place.
I had the same problem last off-season when everyone was telling me how great the AL Preller trades were. My guess is that the Cardinals will get out of this trade what they want. The Indians? We’e talking about a 20 year-old in Class A ball.

Pretty clear how the Brewers viewed Lind….he didn’t get dealt to STL or Houston or Pitt or any team that needed him.

Brewers weren’t dealing Linds 2016 contract…just wasn’t happening

While the team did fine, I would have preferred a Cards lineup with Chris Perez from 2010-13 instead of Franklin, Salas, Mujica and Motte. While the trade for Derosa looked good in the beginning, it really bit us hard down the line.

VanMan (Norris) already has T-Shirts and diving highlight reel catch along with his awesome start.
The guy is a PR department’s dream come true!
Can’t wait for the Must-See-Van-Man start.

Unfortunately the media has the unenviable task of deciding who the winners and losers are of deadline deals immediately after they happen. Of course it’s impossible to know if a trade involving young prospects works out well for the club that acquired them until several years down the road. Most prospects don’t become everyday players after all.
Fortunately for the media, when a writer pans a trade as a win for one team, no one makes them eat their words when that prospect ends up being a bust years later.
