Don’t expect to see Troy Tulowitzki traded anytime soon, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post writes. While the Rockies’ star shortstop has been bandied around in trade rumors for some time, GM Jeff Bridich doesn’t necessarily see anything happening in the next few weeks. He also says that the Tulo trade talk of last winter was overblown.
“There was never anything in the wintertime that got to be of serious interest,” Bridich said. “Some teams were poking around. The (hip) injury was complicated. There was never anything that remotely came close to happening.”
Bridich continues to say he is open to all possibilities, but Saunders personally would be surprised if Tulowitzki is traded this summer. Here’s more out of the NL West..
- If the Padres trade James Shields, just signed to a monster deal last winter, they could risk turning off future free agents, Dennis Lin of U-T San Diego writes. Still, the temptation is probably there for San Diego as Shields’ contract is backloaded – he’ll go from $10MM this season to $21MM in each of the next three with an opt-out clause after the 2016 World Series.
- There has been some speculation that the Padres could rebuild given their disappointing year, but Padres lead investor Peter Seidler says that won’t be happening. “First, we want to provide an exceptional All-Star experience for everybody. Obviously, as part of that, we hope we have multiple players participating in the All-Star Game, because that will reflect on a strong team,” Seidler told Lin. “But our expectations are going to be high going into the next year as well as 2017 and every year beyond.”
- Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register (on Twitter) wonders if the Dodgers need to make a move for a starting pitcher. In all starts made by Dodgers pitchers besides Clayton Kershaw, Zack Greinke, Brett Anderson, and Brandon McCarthy, the club has a combined 4.53 ERA.
- In addition to their world-record payroll, the Dodgers are spending in other creative ways to gain an extra advantage, as Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times writes.

So basically ownership is running the show, and padres are f*****

Saunders is one of those beat writers that should be completely ignored. He has no inside info and the Rockies FO can’t stand him (he’s relentlessly negative, even whiny). Tulo may or may not be traded, but the characterization in Saunders’ story should not be taken seriously.
redsfan83
all the teams you mention are still in the hunt for a playoff spots why would they make such deals? Why would the Yankees give up their farm for rental players?
Good try though I guess.

“We’re going to be competitive every year” is an admirable philosophy, and one that every team should strive for — but you also have to be sure that you have the right team in place, both on the MLB roster, in your minor league system and in your front office.
Speaking as a Cubs fan, Jim Hendry had the same kind of idea. The Cubs were always just a move or two away from being contenders. One left-handed power bat and a leadoff man away, no matter how many left-handed power bats or leadoff men we cycled through or how bad our record was the year before. The end result was that we had an aging roster that couldn’t get it done, capitalized on basically nothing in terms of trading players who still had some value (i.e., Aramis Ramirez), and he basically ignored the farm system until his last year or so in charge when he finally made some moves, most internationally. Four years of fire sales is what it took to get us back just to being a relevant force in the game again.
I’m not commenting directly on the Padres; I’m not qualified to do it. Just a word of caution. Competing every year is the right goal, but it doesn’t automatically mean it’s feasible from where you’re standing.

Nothing is automatic in baseball. All we can hope for is an ownership that doesn’t abuse the trust of the hometown fans. Rebuilding can be an excuse for ownership pocketing a lot of profit instead of investing it in the on-field product. If the fans let them get away with it, then why would any owner do otherwise?

The Cubs were a suburban fan and Alou over exaggeration away from a World Series….well…a booted ball as well. Still, if that series happened whether they won or not nothing else would have mattered in Hendrys tenure. Cubs had the best team in baseball in 2003. I’ll take shots at the Wrigley denizens from time to time..but that’s my belief
Dock_Elvis
Maybe only the Cubs could withstand a Cubs style tear down. Cubs took full advantage of their marketing presence. I saw a little dip in attendance in the early months the past few seasons…but come Memorial Day the Cubs were selling out the Wrigley Museum to tourists just like in a winning year. I’m not sure if they wouldn’t sell out Memorial-labor Day if they lost 100 ten years in a row…if nothing else it adds to the lovable loser mystique.

1. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
2. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
3. I doubt the Royals trade Finnegan and I doubt these two teams make such a high-profile trade because they are division rivals, but I could MAYBE see them trading Almonte/Zimmer AND a mid-level prospect like Christian Colon for Price
4. Maybe, but Detroit would need Hoffman and another higher end prospect like Franklin Barreto
5. It’s very hard to imagine a top 10 pitcher in the MLB getting traded for one 23 year old former prospect who is coming off of Tommy John and is currently on the DL after surgery for a hernia.

Most of those trade packages are too light. Only the Pirates package is somewhat decent, although it is still probably too light.
Philliesfan4life
With Taillon injured again, I don’t think he will be traded and I think the pirates are keeping him as a solid number 3 or 4 when he comes back. I see him on the team next season.
Math&Baseball
Don’t think they’ll trade shields. Consensus is cause it’s in bad taste to trade a guy you just signed for the next couple years. Don’t think shields is asking for a trade either.
Unless the padres are blown away by an offer for shields he’s staying put.
Ross Cashner Kennedy are all up to be dealt and if Hamels stays put all 3 become more attractive to contenders cause they won’t cost as much as Cueto will.
I’d like to see an Upton/Kennedy package to net the Padres some close or at MLB ready players.
kingjenrry
On the flipside, it must be annoying signing the rest of your career away to a team with a bad front office, bad karma, and a now-gutted farm system. It’s hard to see the Padres competing in the near future. Man, the Padres would look a lot better if they still had Trea Turner and Joe Ross…
pimpdaddy
Didn’t the Padres get Will Myers in that trade. Is Will Myers still considered one of the best young up and coming hitter in all of baseball?
How many games have Trea Turner and Joe Ross played at the major league level?
The Padres have dealt with injuries and under performed for a for a month and a half now but they have a good core of players.Expect them to have a good second half.
Wisler is the only prospect that got traded that they will miss a year from now.
RedRooster
Ross has pitched in the Majors and actually done a pretty good job at it. Turner is projected to make his Major League debut by the end of this season and some say he will be the Nationals’ everyday shortstop before the season is over.
pimpdaddy
Ya I know Ross has played 3 games. He projects to maybe be a decent # 3 starter.Wow big woopy. Turner will be up next year and I don’t expect him to hit MLB pitching
theo2016
They could have traded kennedy, tyson ross and cashner and called up ross and wisler for the same production though. Grandal, trea turner and cameron maybin could have been a good offensive core for next year along with the other position players who will be ready.
pimpdaddy
Kennedy,Tyson Ross,Cashner were a huge part in one of the best staffs in baseball last year it would have been stupid to break that up to start Ross.If they still had ross he could crack the rotation,if the rotation was healthy.Kemp still has a few good years left, the grandal trade will even out.Nobody in baseball wanted Maybin, yes he is having a nice season though.
pimpdaddy
test
pimpdaddy
They had one of the best staffs in baseball last season why would you trade Tyson Ross,Cashner or Kennedy when they all pitched well last season.l
Grandal trade will even out Kemp is starting to heat up.
I dont think Turner will hit in the majors.
Joe ross couldn’t make our current rotation iwhen rotation is healthy.
Maybin is having a good year but do you remember nobody in baseball wanted him.Preller was trying to trade him for months.

In my perfect world the following would happen:
Tyson Ross, Craig Kimbrel and Will Venable to the Cubs for Baez, Schwarber and CJ Edwards. Try to get the Cubs to take a portion of Melvin Uptons contract as well.
Justin Upton and James Shields to the Blue Jays for Dalton Pompey and Daniel Norris.
Kennedy, Benoit, and Kelley for the best prospect you can get, not sure of specific names.
I would also trade Derek Norris for the best package you can get, but haven’t heard any names thrown around in the catching trade market.
Ownership obviously doesn’t want to completely punt next year for the Padres, but they may need to accept that a full Astros style rebuild is necessary.
RedRooster
I doubt any other team wants to take on James Shields’ remaining salary, let alone give up any valuable prospects in order to do it.
phaenix
In my perfect world the following would happen:
Ross, Kimbrel and Venable to the Cubs for Baez Schwarber and Edwards, try to tack on Melvin Upton.
Justin Upton and Shields to the Blue Jays for Dalton Pompey and Daniel Norris
mikesciosciasucks
I think Schwarber is close to untouchable at this point for the Cubs. I wouldn’t take any of those three players for him. Kimbrel is the most valuable piece and he pitches one inning The idea of tacking on an albatross of a contract like Upton would have the Cubs hanging up the phone so quick. Also, backloading that Shields contract makes Shields have close to zero trade appeal. He’s pitching in one of the friendliest ballparks and his ERA and FIP and higher thanks to his atrocious defense.
