In an appearance on MLB Network Radio on Sirius XM, Rockies GM Jeff Bridich said that he is “at least open to considering” a deal involving star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki (Twitter link). Last we checked in, Tulowitzki said he was not interested in being dealt, and he is believed to have significant sway with club ownership over his status. All said, there remains little reason to believe at present that Tulo is a serious trade candidate.
We already touched upon a series of interesting rumors involving National League clubs earlier today, but here’s the latest out of the NL:
- Despite recent chatter that the Braves could consider dealing starter Julio Teheran, the young righty is “not being shopped,” David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports on Twitter. Given his cheap control, O’Brien says the team would need to be overwhelmed by an offer to consider such a move.
- Indeed, the Braves are more likely to hold off on deciding whether to part with Teheran or outfielder Cameron Maybin, MLB.com’s Mark Bowman reports. The more likely trade pieces for Atlanta, he suggests, are veterans on one-year deals such as reliever Jim Johnson, utilityman Kelly Johnson, and catcher A.J. Pierzynski. The Braves have been asked about outfielder Nick Markakis, who still has three years left on his free agent deal, but the team is not making him available. And while Juan Uribe could well be dealt, the club reportedly prefers to attempt to move Chris Johnson first.
- An executive of a club with interest in adding a hitter says the Reds are giving the impression that they are looking to “save money” wherever possible, Jayson Stark of ESPN.com reports on Twitter. That seemingly speaks to the availability of outfielder Jay Bruce, who recent reports indicate is very much in play.
- The Mets are still willing to deal Jon Niese, but are asking for a player with multiple years of control in return, Stark tweets. The southpaw has turned up his performance of late, racking up eight straight quality starts (at least 6 innings pitched, no more than 3 earned runs) since a run of rough outings to end the month of May. He is playing on a $7MM salary this year and represents a $9MM tab for 2016, but can be controlled thereafter through a pair of options ($10MM and $11MM, respectively, each with $500K buyouts). Given New York’s evident budgetary restrictions, it has seemed that moving Niese’s salary could be a way for the club to free resources to allocate to the struggling offense, but it’s not clear whether they’ll have much hope of pulling that off in a single transaction.
Carlos760
Carl crawford has couple years of control lol. I doubt niese gets a top 15 in any organization.
neverender82
I disagree. I think it’s possible considering he’s got a track record of success and 5 straight years over 2 fWAR, I know he’s not an ace, but he’s above league average, and that has to count for something.
hojostache
Niese is on a hot streak for his last 2 months, but his career #’s are solidly in the middle of the pack. He can be a #3 on a number of teams or more likely a #4 on a competitive team, which is crucial for any team in the hunt who need every win down the stretch. People bag on him, but his numbers are solid. He can definitely bring back some talent…and he is controllable for at least 3 more years.
WrongVerb
How about Neise for G.Parra? I’m a Reds fan and think Byrd would make a nice short-term fit but it sounds like they want someone younger.
Steve Adams
If they’re seeking someone with multiple years of control, Parra doesn’t fit.
neverender82
That’s pretty damn fair for both teams, I think… Except that the Brewers are looking to rebuild I’d assume and considering the competition to get Parra, it’s probably a no-go
slider32
Kazmir got two A ball players, Neise is worth less.
neverender82
Actually, one of those 2 players was ranked in Houstons top 10 mid season. And this is one of the top systems in baseball. In fact, Nottingham might even be the A’s 2nd best prospect right off the bat!
Kazmir is a rental as well. That drops trade value. It isn’t just as simple as you describe.
Nate 16
As a Brewer fan, not bad trade but no thanks, we do meed a lefty though

It’s been years since Madoff and all of the big contracts are off the books (not counting Wright’s because it’s insured). The fact that the Wilpons can still have the salary restrictions that they have (reports are that they’re unwilling to add Zobrist because of his $3MM salary the rest of the year) is insane to me. More insane is that the Wilpons were supported by Selig and are now supported by Manfred*. MLB forced McCourt out and now the Dodgers are spending; the Wilpon support is baffling to me.
I normally don’t complain about this stuff, but it’s ridiculous.
*Manfred quoted today: “I’ve known both Fred and Jeff Wilpon a very long time. I know they are absolutely committed to winning and that they will spend money when they think they can spend money and have it be effective in terms of making that team better.”
Rally Weimaraner
Frank McCourt was a totally different level of awful
treday
McCourt was unwilling to spend money on players, but spent 6 figures to pay some dude in Boston to watch Dodger games and send the team good vibes. McCourt HAD to go.
rct
Was he? Genuine question. They both seem pretty odious to me. The Wilpons were embroiled an enormous financial scandal that led to them paying out over $150MM in a lawsuit, which has had a direct impact on the team’s spending for almost seven years now. Regardless of the McCourt comparison, their spending habits alone should have been enough for at least some investigating by MLB.
They play in New York and have a payroll less than teams like Minnesota and Kansas City and are very reluctant to add even a few million.
Rally Weimaraner
The Mets got mixed up with Bernie Madoff which was without question a bad decision but it wasn’t made with the intent of bankrupting the Mets. McCourt almost bankrupted the Dodgers just to make himself some extra money.
rct
Good explanation, and makes sense. Although, imo, I wouldn’t say that they got mixed up with Madoff. It’s clear that they had some idea that Madoff wasn’t legit, hence the lawsuit and payout.
coleham
He Madoff with all their money.
neverender82
The report about the Zobrist deal being held up wasn’t over cash. The A’s were interested in Montero and the Mets see him as expendable, but Oakland wanted to wait until closer to the deadline (not surprising at all since 29 other teams could use him), and now he’s broken. If Im Sandy, im careful what pieces I trade for a guy who’s not only a rental, but not enough to transform this offense on his own. But yeah, the report about it being held up over $2MM is dubious at best. That’s the lazy way out for reporters.
theo2016
Beane said the mets havent made the best offer for zobrist. Supposedly multiple better offers.
neverender82
Not surprising. If I’m Sandy, and Zobrist is the only guy we can realistically add through a trade, I don’t cross the line with impact prospects because: a) he’s a rental, and b) he is NOT enough to turn this team into a playoff team on his own. Just picture this next year, Mets fans… Guys like Conforto, Nimmo, Herrera, and Cecchini should realistically be up and ready next year if not this.
rct
Good points.
imo, though, Zobrist doesn’t need to ‘transform’ the offense. I saw a stat the other day that said that the Mets are something like 34-5 when they score 4 or more runs. Given that and the fact that scoring is down all over the league, if Zobrist helps you score an extra run here and there (which he definitely would), it could be the difference between making the playoffs and not.
neverender82
Ehh, I think that it’d take more than just Zobrist. Without Wright and TdA, this offense is pitiful.
slider32
Wilpon is on the finance committee for the MLB, what a joke!
Erik Trenouth
Colabello for Niese?
ashley
That is funny and it was my first thought too. Niese for Colabello, which would benefit both teams and perhaps the Jays can include Dickey for Syndergaart, which gives the Jays their two controllable arms without really hurting the team. lol
Draven Moss
I hope the last part wasn’t serious.
zxcx
Who in the world do they expect Niese to bring back if they want someone with control? He’d have to be part of a bigger trade as salary offset in order for that to happen unless we’re talking a marginal piece/pen arm.
seamaholic 2
I imagine what they have in mind is a more-or-less permanently blocked AAA hitter with a little successful big league experience whose primary skill is with the bat. There are plenty of those types around.
screwball
Ender Inciarte?
petfoodfella
I think Atlanta should only trade AJ if they get a Catching prospect, and feel AJ will return next year. I like what he’s done for the team/staff.
No one is going to trade for CJ, just release him. He’s the next Dan Uggla 3.0, and we just need to move on.
Keep Uribe, he’s a fan favorite and a gamer.
I doubt they’d let Markakis go, unless a similar situation where they are just blown away. He’s exactly what the new guys want, higher avg, higher obp, walks, not a lot of K’s, etc.
Sure, he’s no Heyward, but I don’t miss Heyward.
I would trade Julio if someone gave a good package, I get the sneaky feeling he’s the next Jair Jurrjens.
David 29
We only trade AJ, and we will literally suck for the next few years because our offense will be horrible.. unless you plan on selling in the offseason.
RunDMC
The next 2 seasons will not be determined by trade deadline deals. The inquiries on Markakis tell that his deal was very good in this market, even if he only has 1 HR.
neverender82
It’s waaay to soon to say that Markakis deal is good. In fact, it looks like a terrible one.
RunDMC
Obviously it’s in the perspective of “so far”. So far, the deal looks good. Didn’t think I’d have to put that because we’re just moments away from getting crushed by a falling vending machine.
neverender82
Idk man, with all due respect, he’ll be 32 this year, Fangraphs hates his defensive work so far, he’s got injury history and no power. I mean matbe he’s useful as a leadoff hitter with his current OBP, but $44MM is a lot to pay for a corner outfielder with a highish BABIP and bad defense/no power. And this is coming from a Mets fan, so I’ve suffered some bad deals. I was actually relieved they didn’t sign him this past offseason. Especially with a contract like that
Salionski
Based on his “current” play he has been worth what he has thus far earned. And that is with him recovering from a neck injury that has affected his ability to hit for power. At least some of his previous power should return. His defensive ability has always been overrated by the masses, but he’s not a total liability. He doesn’t have enough of an injury history to even call it that. The contract wasn’t great, but it’s far from awful.
RunDMC
Injury history? Markakis has played in 147 games or more in every season except for one (104). Five (yes, five) seasons he’s played in 160 games (of a 162-game schedule) or more, including three in a row. He’s almost at 100 this year (94) and that was with major offseason neck surgery. You know the girl at work that has the baby on Friday and is in early on Monday morning…that’s Nick.
Sure, Fangraphs might not like him, but $11M a season is chump change for what we’re getting compared to how much we are paying Uggla to not play for us. (I mean, look how much your team is paying Bobby Bonilla). You’re not stating the intangibles with Markakis nor the fact that he has the most hits of any RF not named Nelson Cruz in MLB. With his hitting skills, he can hit anywhere in the lineup.
neverender82
Yeah the surgery was what I meant by injury concerns. However, $11MM may be chump change, but believe it or not, that can hurt trade value. Jon Niese has a nice similar contract, and solid performance for the last 5 years, but we’ve seen comments from rival executives saying that the contract (9/10/11M$ years) hurts his trade value. I mean it’s not the Jason Bay contract, but it really isn’t anything spectacular.
neverender82
If it was a 2 year deal, sure. But 4? The only positive ability he has is his OBP so far this year, and he’s got an elevated BABIP. That combined with the negative defensive value and complete lack of power, I mean it’s not the nightmare that every journalist said it was when they signed him, but I just don’t buy it as a great deal.
Salionski
I doubt there are many out there that actually claim that the signing was a great one. At this point it’s a fairly good deal based on current evidence. Especially considering he is still recovering from that neck surgery. The fact that the deal is 4 years isn’t really that alarming either, since he’s not the type of player that should see a serious drop in performance. It’s really not a stretch to think he will end up being worth that contract. Especially when you add in the intangibles.
neverender82
Meh, intangibles are historically overrated.
Salionski
They were historically overrated, and now today they are instead becoming underrated. Just because something can’t be quantified easily doesn’t mean it suddenly has no value.
neverender82
Just out of curiosity, what are his intangibles?
RunDMC
He makes a mean key lime pie, often car pools, has been known to tip 30% and once treated his mom to a Caribbean vacation that she has said was “the best time ever”.
Salionski
Nick has a great work ethic and he is a good clubhouse veteran. That will have an impact on a team. Even more on a team that is filled with young players. Without the intangibles included he is earning his contract. The extras are just putting it over the top.
Intangibles may not have the impact some old school baseball people would like to believe, but they do have an effect. We’re dealing with human beings…not robots. Some statistic inclined people like to complain that old school baseball folk relied on intangibles too much, but the new school of advanced statistics is doing the same thing by relying on the numbers too much. Going too far in either direction isn’t a good idea.
RunDMC
Maybe, but you can’t factor that in because it isn’t a line item on Fangraphs. You cannot measure the impact Markakis has on the team and his teammates. I think they’re actually underrated because guys like him, AJ Pierzynski, Jonny Gomes have helped make these guys competitive, in the same division as the 2015 Preseason World Champions, Washington Nationals.
jeffro513
If I’m the reds im calling the angels and seeing about Bruce for Tropeano. Garicia. Delgado. Saurez.that’s there 4th 9th 15th 26th prospects and there able to keep Newcomb. Them I’d be calling the blue jays about Cueto for Norris and maybe a lower tier hitter or two. Chapman to wherever for some hitting prospects and Byrd to royals or pirates for some hitters. Trade pena . and leak to the royals or Yankees for more hitting prospects. That’d be close to forty million in salary relief with some young controlled player’s I’d the try to reup Frazier and sign a pitcher or two this off season and maybe a bat get meso healthy and cozart and try to compete if you can next yr if not trade some more player’s you just signed if there performing good. Replenish the farm completely.
ashley
I doubt very seriously that the Jays trade any of their top five prospects for a rental player. That would be Norris, Pompey, Hoffman, Pentecost, and Castro. Those are all pieces that are needed in Toronto, not on the competition teams against them. The Kazmir deal today shows that fans expecting teams to sell the farm for a rental isn’t happening. I can see the Jays parting with their 8 – 10 prospects that include Nay, Smith and Labourt, with perhaps Boruki, Davis, Boyd and any of their 21 – 30 prospects being in the mix. No team is going to trade their top prospect for a two-month rental, since Cueto has a slim to zero chance of being signed as a free agent in Toronto.
jeffro513
And that’s fine with me cause soon as they reject the deal my words to the gm would be like OK well see what the Yankees gotta offer. Trade him to the competition so that’s how I’d look at it if you don’t anty up be prepared to face him
jeffro513
First time they face them and he dominates them as the owner I’d fire the gm lol
BoldyMinnesota
If Castro can be the center piece in a trade, I’d be happy because he’s only projected to be a reliever in the long run
seamaholic 2
That’s as close as Bridich gets to “come at me people, we’re open for business.” I think Tulo is VERY much available.
scann
Tulo wants to be a Yankee………Make it happen Bridich accommodate your employee………
hojostache
Do the Yankees have enough talent that COL would want?
neverender82
COL front office is smoking crack if any of the reports about their demands are true.
screwball
“The Braves have been asked about outfielder Nick Markakis, who still has three years left on his free agent deal, but the team is not making him available.”
You have got to be kidding me.
RunDMC
Why? He’s in the top-9 in the NL in OBP, plays above-average RF, great clubhouse guy, can hit anywhere in the line-up and is controlled through another 3 seasons. It’d be great to have his power back, but that’s worth his price.
neverender82
It really isn’t though.
sportfan
Just because the Braves are saying that Markakls is not available it does not mean that he is really not available
slider32
Look what was had for Kazmir, Neice is worth a lot less.
Nate 16
Hey Bridich, you should have rebuilt 2 years ago
Now you have 2 oft injured stars with diminished trade value.
The same thing will happen if some of these teams delay the inevitable ——Brewers, Padres, Cole Hamels to name a few situations.
Get what you can for your guys if they aren’t part of your future.
A-Rod the GOAT
Crazy idea, but if I’m the Wilpons I’m shopping Harvey. They could get some high quality, near-MLB-ready hitting prospects, and really set this team up for the next 2-3 years. The Mets would still have some dominant young pitching (led by deGrom) that are under control longer than Harvey, and could add some exciting talent to go along with Conforto, Herrera, etc for the beginning of 2016. Thoughts?
Nate 16
Never trade controlable arms that are that good. Next year they could have Harvey, Wheeler, deGrom, Syn
Not to mention David Wright maybe gets back and they have money coming off books and good farm system
Looking back I wish they hadn’t have paid David Wright all that money. Could have filled a lot of holes.
Dock_Elvis
Wright is a huge question mark. Spinal stenosis is perpetual and chronic.. At best he might come back sporadically. He might be done for all reasonable purposes.
