Here’s what teams from the NL East did in the days leading to this afternoon’s trade deadline.
- The Phillies were, unsurprisingly, at the center of the action, shipping ace Cole Hamels to Texas (along with reliever Jake Diekman and cash) in exchange for Matt Harrison, top catching prospect Jorge Alfaro, pitching prospects Jake Thompson, Alec Asher and Jerad Eickhoff, and outfield prospect Nick Williams. In another significant move, they sent closer Jonathan Papelbon and cash to Washington in exchange for pitching prospect Nick Pivetta. They also sent outfielder Ben Revere and cash to the Blue Jays for pitchers Jimmy Cordero and Alberto Tirado.
- The Nationals were, of course, the team on the other end of the Papelbon deal, for which they agreed to exercise Papelbon’s 2016 option after it was reduced from $13MM to $11MM, some of that deferred. They also outrighted catcher Dan Butler.
- Despite not completing a reported deal for Carlos Gomez, the Mets made plenty of noise at the deadline, acquiring Yoenis Cespedes from the Tigers for pitching prospects Michael Fulmer and Luis Cessa. They also acquired reliever Tyler Clippard and cash from the Athletics for pitcher Casey Meisner. Last week, they acquired infielders Juan Uribe and Kelly Johnson, plus cash, from the Braves for pitchers John Gant and Rob Whalen, and they promoted top prospect Michael Conforto.
- The Braves were on the other end of the Uribe/Johnson deal. They also were part of a massive 13-player trade with the Dodgers and Marlins in which they acquired infielder Hector Olivera, lefty Paco Rodriguez and pitching prospect Zachary Bird for top infield prospect Jose Peraza, along with pitchers Alex Wood, Jim Johnson, Luis Avilan and Bronson Arroyo. The Braves also designated reliever David Carpenter for assignment.
- In that aforementioned 13-player trade, the Marlins sent Mat Latos and Michael Morse to the Dodgers in return for pitchers Kevin Guzman, Jeff Brigham and Victor Araujo. They also shipped Dan Haren and cash to the Cubs for shortstop Elliot Soto and righty Ivan Pineyro, and they traded reliever Sam Dyson to the Rangers for catcher Tomas Telis and lefty Cody Ege. Last week, they dealt reliever Steve Cishek to the minors for pitcher Kyle Barraclough. Finally, they released infielder Jeff Baker.

I hope one day I can figure out how to mentally detach from being a marlins fan. There is no joy in being a marlins fan, only misery…

multiple world series in what a 20 year history?

Well I was born in 1993, the same year as their inaugural season. So when they won the WS in ’97 I didn’t even know what baseball was. The ’03 WS they won, is the first time I can remember watching baseball, and while I was rooting for them I wouldn’t call myself a “fan” yet. I started getting into baseball around ’05 and was a full time fan by ’06, and since then they’ve only had two winning season and no playoff appearances. Take a look at the list of players the marlins have traded just in the last 10 years, Miguel Cabrera, Hanley Ramirez, Carlos Delgado, Jose Reyes, Mike Lowell, Josh Beckett, Dontrell Willis, Josh Johnson, Anibal Sanchez, Mark Buehrle and plenty more. So my experience as a marlins fans has been pretty terrible and I have’t even mentioned the crook owner.

I understand what John Hart is supposed to be doing but he got hosed in that 3 team deal. Just because they are aiming for a great ’17 in their new stadium, there is no guarantee that these players in the minors will pan out. I hope things work out like they are hoping because this has been a hard year to experience as a Braves fan and it’s not over yet

I wouldn’t necessarily call Olivera a minor league player.. He signed out of Cuba and is raking in the minors.. He didn’t make the Dodgers roster yet because they have no room for him.. He should be playing 3rd for the Braves very shortly and will be a solid player for a couple of years.. Since he is 29-30 he should be in his prime already.. He was a very solid get for the Braves.. Paco was a vast improvement over Johnson.. If he wasn’t injured he never would have left LA.. Plus, they unloaded the Arroyo contract.. That means they got Touissant for basically nothing.. Hart should be given GM of the year for this trade alone.. Let alone for his fleecing of Arizona, San Diego (twice) and looking like the winner in his trade with the Yankees..
