Though he admitted that he’s not privy to the front office’s discussions, Phillies manager Pete Mackanin told Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com that he expects ace Cole Hamels to be traded. “We’re not involved on the field,” said Mackanin. “But the whole point of this year basically is to see young guys, help us get ready for next year and beyond. If we can get good deals for Hamels and good deals for whomever else there might be out there, (Jonathan) Papelbon.” Hamels recently told Salisbury that he’s open to a trade to any club, including the Blue Jays and Astros. Previous reports had indicated that Hamels would block a deal to either club.
Here’s more from the NL East…
- The Tigers are scouting the Marlins’ starting pitchers, reports Jon Morosi of FOX Sports (via Twitter). There could be very little to read into here, as multiple teams are likely scouting the Marlins, and the Tigers of course are scouting other clubs. Nonetheless, a pitching matchup, at least on paper, does seem to exist between the two sides. The Tigers have seen Shane Greene lose his spot in the rotation and received little from Justin Verlander to this point. A solid addition to the rotation would make some sense, and the Marlins have a surplus now that Jose Fernandez is healthy. Fernandez joins Mat Latos, Dan Haren, Tom Koehler and Jarred Cosart in the rotation. Latos and Haren, though, are free agents at season’s end, and the team has internal replacements capable of slotting into the rotation in the event of a trade.
- Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald hears that the Marlins are indeed willing to listen to offers on Latos and Haren. He adds Steve Cishek to that list as well and unsurprisingly says that the fallen closer likely will be non-tendered this offseason. Jackson, like other reporters, hears that the team isn’t entertaining the idea of moving Martin Prado at this point.
- Mets captain David Wright is “extremely optimistic” that he can begin baseball activities next week, tweets ESPN New York’s Adam Rubin. Wright won’t begin hitting in that time, however. Previously, the Mets have expressed hope to have the third baseman back by the All-Star break, though that timeline is fast approaching and Wright is still quite a ways from a rehab assignment.
miggypop44
Love it when the Tigers scout the Marlins players. We always seem to fleece them in deals.
metsfanlosingfaith61
Yes the Tigers do! Cabrera was the biggest steal deal ever done.
metsfanlosingfaith61
So the face of the Franchise, David Wright is eager to return… We have heard this already. There is no timetable of when he is going to officially return. What we do know is the Mets continue to flounder with this sloppy defense and offense. I would like to see the Mets go out and bring in Delmon Young. He can play for Cuddyer and Granderson, which allows Cuddyer to go to first to give Duda time off. Young is also 29 years old and is more than worth the gamble at 2.25 million.
JordanSwingman
He’s not an answer, unfortunately. He’s better suited for an AL team, ala the Astros for right now.
metsfanlosingfaith61
Who Young? Young is a lot better than what we have right now on the bench. Mayberry Jr, and Cecillini (sorry, cannot spell his name) are a joke! Don’t even say Kurt!
JordanSwingman
Not really. They need to focus on getting an impact bat or bats for their lineup, then the bench can be improved. It’s a mess right now, they can’t win without d’Arnaud out of the lineup, and likewise can’t win with Ruben Tejada in the lineup, let alone still a part of this team.
kingjenrry
Delmon Young has been outhit by Ruben Tejada. It’s hard to believe you could be serious.
slider32
I wouldn’t trade with Hart right now, he seems to be on a roll. How does Banuelos get cramps from the heat, he’s from Mexico
metsfanlosingfaith61
The Mets also need to move forward with the departure of Jon Neise. The Dodgers, Cardinals, and several American League teams are in need of a starter, who is a 3-4-5. We are not going to get the world for him, but we could pick up a piece that can help us now or for next year. Sadly, the Mets are not going to make a blockbuster deal for a Trout, Harper or Stanton; all true hall of famers and untouchable. We also know Daniel Murphy won’t be back next year either, so they should look to trade him, maybe in a package with Neise.
Portland Micro-Brewers
What do they want for Niese?
Donnie B
Niese and Murphy to the Yankees for 2B Refsynder
Portland Micro-Brewers
If I’m the Yankees I run away from that. I think Refsynder should be at the MLB level right now. Rob is going on his 3rd month without more K’s than BB’s, consecutively. Murphy should play LF or 1B.
kingjenrry
Refsnyder’s ceiling is what Daniel Murphy already is. Compare Murphy’s AAA numbers to Refsnyder’s. Murphy was already a productive Major Leaguer at Refsnyder’s age. Niese and Murphy to the Yankees for Refsnyder makes perfect sense for the Yankees but none whatsoever for the Mets.
Portland Micro-Brewers
To kingjenrry Refsnyder’s ceiling is higher than age 30 Daniel Murphy. Murphy may be a likely outcome for Refsnyder but not his best case. The Yankees need Refsnyders youth and low salary. They don’t want an aging 30 year old on an expiring deal.
metsfanlosingfaith61
Sandy Alderson the Marlins are listening for offers about Prado??? What are you waiting for? Delmon Young and Prado – we could use the both of these players!!!!
Steve Adams
“Jackson, like other reporters, hears that the team isn’t entertaining the idea of moving Martin Prado at this point.”
Donnie B
Read it again, the Marlins are NOT interested in moving Prada at this point.
Do you really want Delmon young playing the OF? Did you not see him playing for the Phillies as their RF??? he was horrible. The Mets of isn’t the problem, Cuddyer – Largares – Granderson all doing just as well or better than D. Young can do.
Injuries to Wright, d’Arnaud and Murphy has been the Mets downfall all along, and that happens. If you don’t think Herrera is ready to play 2B yet – then there’s the target.
If Wright isn’t ready soon, I would suggest A. Ramirez from the Brewers, he’ll come cheap. As for 2B – there is Aaron Hill / Ben Zobrist / Jed Lowrie
But realize, the only reason the Nats aren’t even better than they have been is also because of injuries.. Losing Werth, Rondon and Strasburg / Fister for the time they did hurt, and yet they will still run away with the division for quite some time.
NoAZPhilsPhan 2
Yep, there is a reason Mr. Young has often been referred to as _elmon… No D
kingjenrry
Prado and Delmon Young would both be a downgrade for the Mets.
edcl51
Hope Hamels goes to a team that has legit prospects, not the Bostons of the world who THINK they have top prospects. Cubs are my top choice for a trading partner with the phillies
Draven Moss
Keep telling yourself that. Clearly, the Red Sox pay big money to scouting organizations to rate their prospects higher than others! Sounds legit!
slider32
Harvey to the Sox for Betts, Bradley, and Holt.
Draven Moss
I doubt either team does that.
Portland Micro-Brewers
What if Chicago offered Kyle Schwarber, Javier Baez + throw in pitcher for Cole and $3 million a year to pay down his contract? Would Philly take a throw in prospect as the only SP?
slider32
Harvey for Baez, Schwarber, and McKinney.
Portland Micro-Brewers
Harvey’s low cost controlled present/future would net a higher return than that. That’s a great high risk/upside package from Chicago though.
kingjenrry
Add $40 million in “cash considerations” and the Mets should jump on that ASAP.
Donnie B
How about Hamels and Revere to the Cubs…
Schwarber / Baez /Edwards and Wood to the Phillies.
Portland Micro-Brewers
I like it for both teams.
Draven Moss
Seems fair to me, as well as the one Donnie B proposed below.
metsfanlosingfaith61
The Mets could trade Granderson to Houston Astros – who can fill in for Springer and be a leader for a very young clubhouse.
JordanSwingman
They don’t have a spot for him. More importantly, it doesn’t make sense for either team. I would think a team like the White Sox would be more of a fit.
kingjenrry
Why would the Mets trade their best hitter? What kind of package would you expect for him?
rct
Granderson is basically the only Met hitting right now. Not sure why you’d want to trade him, especially when he probably wouldn’t return much.
JordanSwingman
A package containing Granderson as the centerpiece should be able to bring in Alexi Ramirez/one of the White Sox outfielders. The Mets could package a number of different guys with him.
rct
How on earth does that make the Mets a better team? Ramirez has an OPS of .531. If the Mets wants Ramirez (but there is no reason why they should), they could have him for way, way less than Granderson.
Also, all three of the Sox’ regular outfielders are hitting markedly worse than Granderson. If the Mets traded Granderson for Ramirez and even Garcia, they’d be worse at two separate positions.
slider32
The Mets can make the playoffs if they trade Harvey to the Sox for Betts, Holt, and Bradley, or to the Cubs for Baez, Schwarber, and McKinney.
kingjenrry
Betts/Holt/Bradley wouldn’t be close to enough for the Mets to make that deal. If you add Margot and Johnson, it starts getting closer to reality. The deal you suggest would make sense if Harvey were only a year and a half away from free agency; he’s 3.5 years away and is still making the league minimum.
slider32
The Mets need to fire Alderson and hire Dipoto!
rct
lol, no.
kingjenrry
What’s the rationale behind that?
bobbleheadguru
Something may be up with the Tigers. VerHagen AND Farrell got called up? Very odd to have two “no name” guys called up like that.
Seems clear that they will NOT be sellers. They will tie their hopes to the wildcard until they can climb back into the AL Central Race. As long as Miggy is in his prime, cannot pass up the chance to at least try.
stymeedone
Absolutely! They would have to be 10 games out to consider selling. Verlander could still give them a spark. He’s just completed the number of innings he would have gotten in Spring Training. Victor just returned. Avila is due back, and should help settle the pitching staff. Lobstein hopefully will be ready soon. He was pitching with consistency before his injury. They need to add 1) a solid lefty reliever, 2) A veteran arm like Haren, and 3) a better bench player than Josh Wilson, capable of PH, preferably lefty.
Donnie B
Haren and Morse (if coming of DL soon) would be good additions for the Tigers. Cisheck is widely available too, even though a Righty reliever.
