We just checked in on Yovani Gallardo, who may or may not be dealt before the deadline. Here’s the latest on the starting pitching market, which was one of many topics covered in today’s podcast with Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca.
- Despite reportedly being prepared to deal Alex Wood to the Dodgers, the Braves are still listening on Julio Teheran, Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports reports (Twitter links). He suggests, however, that the club may just be hoping for an overpay rather than actively shopping the young righty.
- Given their starting depth, the Rays have indicated a willingness to listen to offers on right-hander Nate Karns, Passan reports on Twitter. Karns is already 27, but has ample team control and has emerged with 115 innings of 3.37 ERA pitching this year.
- Padres righty Tyson Ross is “drawing intense interest,” Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports on Twitter. The Astros, Blue Jays, Cubs, and Dodgers are all in the mix, says Heyman, and Houston could be the “at the forefront” of efforts to pry him away from San Diego. Notably, many of those clubs are also viewed as prime contenders for David Price. Heyman further breaks down Price’s market in an article today.
- The Giants are also said to be looking into a run at Price after falling short in a “late push” for Cole Hamels (per Rosenthal, on Twitter). GM Bobby Evans says he doesn’t foresee the club parting with players from the team’s current everyday lineup in any deals, as Alex Pavlovic of CSNBayArea.com tweets. But the Tigers do like several of San Francisco’s minor league arms, Jon Morosi of FOX Sports tweets, which could make them plausible pursuers of the ace lefty.

Tyler Beede & Keury Mella for David Price. Do it, Evans!

At least we know, the moonshine is good in Atlanta.

Do the Pads try to get Jose Peraza and another piece or two for Tyson Ross? Tough pill to swallow facing him for the next two years as a Dodger..

Dodgers are probably not in on Ross, at this point. Not with what they’re finishing up now with ATL/MIA.
Only deal for a starter would be the rumored Wood+prospects flip to DET for David Price, if that happens at all.

In an interview on local radio today, Padres CEO as much as said Ross was not being traded. Said he considers Ross one of the top 10 starters in baseball and it would take a combination of players that would make the team better today and top prospects. Look at what its taken to get rentals like Cueto and Price. The top prospect in an organization and two top 10 prospects for 10 starts from these rentals. While I think he may be stretching it a bit about top 10, he is not far off. I would say between 10 and 15 and that is going to mean the top prospect in whatever organization (Dodgers – Seager, Astros – Bregman, Cubs – Schwarber/McKinney) a major league or MLB ready piece that is controllable and better than what Padres have (Dodgers – Guerrero/Hernandez, Astros – Villar?, Cubs – Baez? Sorry Cubs fans, Castro is not an option), plus another two top 10 prospects. I don’t think that even the Astros will be willing to give up what it would take to get Ross.

Domingo Santana, Tony Kemp, Michael Feliz for Tyson Ross
That’s the Astros 7, 15, and 9 prospect. Which would imediately be in your top 10 since 1-20 on the astros list would be on most teams top 10.
throw in Derek Fisher, Joe Musgrove, and Colin Moran if you include Justin upton and Kimberl.
Thats 7, 9, 11, 12, 13, and 15 for Ross, Kimberl, and Upton. That seems more than fair with no money getting exchanged.

You might need just a bit more because I don’t see Kimbrel going to the Astros without cash heading their way too.. Your Ross trade seems to be just about right..

If anybody in baseball except for Starlin Castro himself thinks he is worth Ross they need to sober up.. There is no way Ross is worth Schwarber though.. If he doesn’t stick in the majors for the entire year I can see it being entirely possible for him to become the top overall prospect in all of baseball.. If you think Ross is worth both Schwarber and Baez or Seager and Guerrero I think you need to sober up.. Ross is an exceptional pitcher and could very well be in the top 30-40 in baseball but to think he is better than Kershaw/Greinke/Bumgarner/Harvey/DeGrom/Darvish/King Felix/Kuechel/Fernandez/Cueto/Price/Hamels/Wainwright/Sale/Kluber (that is 15 in no particular order and I am leaving out guys like Gray Tanaka and Samardzija) you are being a bit foolish.. I would put Ross on par with someone like Anibel Sanchez or Michael Pineda.. Until he has a Cy Young caliber season he is not going to be worth a trade equal to an ace..

Advance Metrics with his 1.40 have him with a sub-3 FIP. You get him with a good pitching coach Ross could turn into an Ace. Especially you consider a .28 HR/9 and an almost 50% GB rate.

Beede and Mella won’t get it done, especially if LA offers up Wood (who the Tigers wanted) and Peraza. It’s not even on close when you compare the talent of those two packages.
Now, if the Giants suddenly lose there minds and start offering up pieces of the 25-man, then all bets are off.
mrnatewalter
Giants don’t want a guy that badly. Unless, of course, the Tigers want Tim Hudson and Ehire Adrianza for Price…
lamars
Giants could get it done with Beede, Mella and Susac. Unless the Dodgers are offfering Wood and Peraza. But that is one huge over pay for Price. Wood could be a #2 on most teams and is under control until 2017.

I just don’t think Giants are giving up Susac. That would change things, though.
mrnatewalter
I would give up Susac. Maybe pull back Mella and do Susac + Beede…
Susac could start in place of a variety of starting catchers out there… no reason for the Giants to kill his value by having him play every 5th game.

If you’re the Tigers, does that get it done? Especially when compared withe the Jays’ rumored offer, or even a Wood/Peraza deal from LA?
I think not.
mrnatewalter
What’s the rumored deal from Toronto? I saw Morosi’s proposal that he thought would be enough, but I haven’t seen any rumored offer, although that doesn’t mean there isn’t one.
Is there one?
And who knows if LA moves those two pieces… why not keep them? You might lose Kendrick this winter and they lose some pitching as well. Wood and Peraza offer some good future pieces in LA that they can build along with Seager, Urias, Puig, and, obviously, Kershaw.

I’ve been following baseball for 45 years now and can’t remember a trade deadline like this one. I believe that it’s a sign of the game, social media, and the overall state of baseball today. I’m enjoying it, and think it’s awesome.

Amen. This has been awesome. Last night was pure torture waiting to see what prospects the Phils were getting back for Hamels since it seemed like each one got leaked every 5 minutes on Twitter. First I heard Eickhoff was pulled from his start and was in the deal and I immediately thought, okay he better be no more than the 4th piece coming back, but usually the bigger names leak first so I was worried. Then Alfaro so I said okay, that’s better. Then rumors of Nick Williams so I thought, okay thats 2 solid prospects. Then Asher, another eh prospect. Then the Phillies taking on Harrison’s contract and giving up Diekman which I was fine with but still felt like the Phillies needed one more piece. Then finally the addition of Jake Thompson and I was extremely satisfied with the deal. A win-win for both teams in my eyes. It was a roller coaster.
