Here’s the latest from Ken Rosenthal, via a video at FOX Sports:
- The Cubs and Astros would make sense as teams who could pursue the Padres’ starting pitching, Rosenthal suggests. The Padres would likely have interest in the Cubs’ collection of young middle infielders, and Astros manager A.J. Hinch used to work for the Padres.
- The Rockies are open to trading Troy Tulowitzki but haven’t been aggressive in trying to do so, Rosenthal says. Nonetheless, the Rockies could have a huge impact as sellers if they chose, given that they have Tulowitzki, Carlos Gonzalez, John Axford and LaTroy Hawkins.
- The Dodgers plan to give Jimmy Rollins “a long leash.” Rollins hasn’t hit well this year, but he’s been better this month (.286/.333/.464). Top prospect Corey Seager isn’t exceptional defensively, and if they went with him as a full-time starter, they’d likely feel they had to deal or release Rollins out of respect. That would leave them in a tough spot if Seager didn’t play well.
- The Rangers could both sell and buy at the deadline, perhaps dealing Yovani Gallardo but acquiring fellow veteran starting pitcher Cole Hamels, who could then join Texas’ rotation for the next several years. They could also pursue less of a headline-grabbing route by simply pursuing relievers, as well as a hitter they could use against left-handed pitching.
Vandals Took The Handles
Padres are like the Indians…..
They get a lot of pub off the field, but are below average on it.
Donnie B
Indians starting 5 pitching is awesome. Kluber – Carrasco – Bauer – Salazar – Anderson, Indians are a better team than the Padres.
Vandals Took The Handles
Right. Probably why they’re tied for last place.
We.Need.More.Grit
Having a defense that can’t stop a slow roller, or catch a pop up, or well, FIELD, will do that to you. No doubting the Indians have one of the better and cost controlled rotations, problem is, you can’t win when you can’t stop a ball and get a guy out. SP’s can only K so many.
Steve 39
The Cubs need offense more then they need pitching
Jorge Soler Powered
This. The pitching has been good, but you can’t win when you can barely score.
theo2016
They need a 5th starter though and they will next year as well when their offense will improve just from the youngsters taking a step forward. Bryant and soler while playing fairly well are just scratching the surface. Russell might take a little longer. Schwarber could be catching next year. Remember this was supposed to be a 5 year rebuild. This year is just a bonus.
Donnie B
Lester – Arrieta – Hammel – Kendrick – Wada – Wood – Turner
You don’t need SP.
Fowler and Denorfia are both FA’s after this year.
Zobrist and Clippard to Cubs for Baez and Alcantara would be fair if the Cubs decided to go “all-in” this year.
theo2016
No. Wada doesnt last 5 innings a start. Wood was removed from the rotation for a reason and turner got hurt 2 weeks ago and is done for the year…
theo2016
Also baez and alcantara is a huge overpay. Baez has a higher ceiling than russell and alcantara can be a zobrist lite like right now.

Tulo to Cubs for Castro, Vogelbach and Pierce Johnson. Said it in April. Earth to Bridich! And I hate the Cubs btw….
therealryan
Even if you feel Tulo isn’t worth his contract and/or on the downswing of his career, the Rockies will not trade him without getting an elite prospect or at least two very good ones as headliners in return. That proposed package isn’t nearly enough, especially with Castro having a terrible season.
We.Need.More.Grit
I agree the Rockies will be looking for more prospects, however like with RAJ and his demands, you can’t /not/ eat some money if you want these big blue chippers. His contract could turn south really fast, although he is the best if, top two SS in the game, his injury history and age limit who would risk taking all of that contract, thus the smaller prospect return. You can’t have your cake and eat it too, either eat some cash and get the blue chippers or take what you can and get him off the books, either or, I think they move him this winter.
therealryan
I’m not sure the Rockies really want to move Tulo and don’t think they will just take the top offer to trade him. I think they will look for a very specific type of package, right or wrong. I will also add his contract isn’t nearly as problematic as you make it out to be. The market has grown considerably in recent seasons and is much smaller than what you would expect to pay on the open market. Choo, Sandoval, Elsbury, Porcello and Ramirez have all recently signed for a similar salary to Tulo. Even with the injuries, Tulo has been better than these players. He’s going to cost some big name prospects, even if the Rockies don’t pick up salary.

If the Cubs were to get Shields, do you guys think Padres would get Rusell in return since it says “young infield.”
named4flan
If I’m the cubs I’m giving up Castro or Baez (maybe both) before Russell.
Steve 39
No
Martin H.
Ohh ok… Sorry if it was wishful thinking xD. I’m obviously a Padres fan.
What prospects or players do you think the Padres get in return?
theo2016
Not much if the padres dont eat any money. Maybe arismendy alcantara, jeimer candelero and mark zagunis
bacboris 2
I think its also a question of perceived value. The Cubs could have signed shields but chose not to go for the years/money the Padres did.
With his pitching this year and age, where would the surplus value be? Even if the Padres ate 1/3 of the contract, its doubtful to pay off. So giving up a lottery ticket like Jeimer Candelario seems a bit off. Best case for the Padres? Package shields with a (Cashner?) and pick up as much near ready MLB bats as they can. Cubs would likely hand over Alcantara, Vogelbach, Billy McKinney, and a double A or rule 5 pitcher (think Ivan Pineyro or Ryan Williams).
theo2016
The cubs offered him 60 mil i believe.
We.Need.More.Grit
Great, the Cubs get an elite 1B in Rizzo, then get Cashner back a few years later, now that would be pretty cool to read up on all the pieces later down the line.
Brixton
A guy like a Javier Baez could be in play.
Montu Masters
Padres have to eat a bunch of money to get a prospect with the upside of Baez……and I think the Cubs would trade him, but would want a much younger player, and a less worn out arm.
EB
They wouldn’t get anything for Shields. They could get good prospects for Cashner and Ross, not to mention Upton.
Donnie B
And why would the Padres be interested in trading Shields??? Kennedy and Morrow are FA’s after this season, and Cashner after next. Padres can deal with the Astros – Kennedy for Villar and Grossman or Hoes.
theo2016
Because ghey backloaded his contract for 22 mil a year the next few years. So while under control hes hardly a value for their payroll. Especially because they arent competing next year.
Donnie B
Padres need to sell and reshape for next year.
Sell Justin Upton / Kennedy / Venable / Kelley
theo2016
They need to think at least 2 years down the line. 60 mil committed to shields kemp kimbrel and b.j upton next year? They have too many holes and not enough money or free agents to fill them.
EB
I can’t imagine Shields being moved at this point. Cashner and Ross have fewer years of control.
Matt Galvin
Like the Mets or others will be after Troy.
Gonzalez to either Cardinals or Royals.
willi
I can see the Mets Manage finally see that if the want to get a quality Bat they need tio give up one of the Young Guns Plus another A-Minor Leaguer, do I expect them to do that no , They try and do it on the cheap !
Montu Masters
Dodgers management is ridiculously focused on “playing veterans”. Giving Rollins “a long leash”……not trading Ethier……leaving Guerrero on the bench all year……and entertaining leaving Seager in the minors until September are all signs that “they need medication”. Trade Rollins if you have to, but let Seager get his feet wet this year….he’s the future star of the infield.
theo2016
Where do you want guerero to play? Turner has been stellar. Either pederson and puig are better than him. Kendrick is solid bat and glove.
Donnie B
2016 Dodgers:
1B) Gonzalez
2B) Turner
SS) Seager
3B) Guerrero
C) Grandal
LF) Crawford / Ethier
CF) Pederson
RF) Puig
theo2016
1 he said this year. 2) turner would be at 3rd and guerrero at 2nd. 3) you forgot about hector oliveria
Donnie B
They can’t trade Guerrero this year, because he can reject a trade and become a Free Agent. I see Rollins staying at SS this year, his bat has been good in July and he’s playoff good. Don’t want to put Seager into the game so late into the year.
theo2016
He cant reject a trade. He can opt for free agency at the end of the year if traded. Regardless no one said anything about trading him but you.
BlueSkyLA
They are? The only case you can make for that is Seager, but that argument would need to be backed up with his performance at triple-A, which doesn’t actually support a promotion. And trading Ethier, does that really seem like such a good idea now?
jjd002
I wonder what it would take to get Cashner to come to Houston? We have zero use for Valbuena in a few weeks when Lowrie comes back. I’m sure it would take more, but wondering if that would be a start.
EB
He would be a minor piece. Not much control left. Padres need long term pieces.
Math&Baseball
To pry Cashner away you’d be looking at Wojenchowski and others He’s got a year and a half left so he will be worth more than a guy like Kennedy.
The Padres don’t want Valbuena. They’d be interested in Colin Moran but that’s something to be discussed in a Upton/Kennedy package deal.
jjd002
I’d be fine giving Wojo up and maybe Kemp. But who knows how that would look to San Diego.
EB
(1) Cubs need offense as much as a fifth starter. I don’t see them parting with Baez for any of the Padres starters, maybe Alcantara and maybe Castro since the Padres seem to like buying low on veterans.
(2) Rockies aren’t going to be able to bring themselves to move Tulo. They are just wasting time, much like the Phillies. They didn’t move when they had the chance and they are now stuck with Tulowitzki in decline.
Donnie B
Tulo – 286 AB / 43 R / 91 H / 9 HR / 46 RBI / .318 AVG
Yeah – he’s sooooo declining.
theo2016
The only stat you mention that is predictive of anything is hr’s. His walk rate is down, hes hitting for less power and his defense has been worse. While still a beast i think its safe to say he is entering his decline years. I
therealryan
His walk rate was terrible early in the season, but has been coming back up. Since June 1, he has a 9.8% BB% which matches his career mark. That’s over a 143 PA so it’s had time to stabilize as well. After a slow start, probably due to shaking off some rust from the surgery, Tulo has been much better. I would like to see more power, but it’s way to early to say his defense is gone after half a season worth of plays. Even if he’s not quite as impressive as peak years Tulo, it’s better than just about everybody else.
EB
You mentioned a bunch of stats that don’t mean anything and then you don’t compare it to last year. Through 91 games last year Tulo was worth 5.5 wins. This year in 79 games it is 1.5. Not to mention he can’t stay healthy. Not to mention he turns 31 in October.
A team trading for Tulo now is not going to give up elite prospects. He has averaged 86 games a year the last three. It makes no sense for the Rockies to hold a declining asset but they are going to do what the Phillies are doing and demand so much they can’t move him. It’s crazy.
charles stevens
I’d like to see Choo and Kemp swap dugouts this weekend. Makes a ton of sense for both clubs. Rangers need a right handed bat and Padres need a left handed bat. Both players have similar terrible long term contracts. Good old school trade. No scouting required.
named4flan
You’re a straight shooter Chuck. Kevin Towers has a desk placard with your name on it.
We.Need.More.Grit
Dear Lord, I thought of KT when I saw this. “I like this, Deeeee kiddo, he reminds me of Jeter cause he wears number one, let’s three team this and give YOU, a top prospect in Bauer for the low cost of this Gregoreeee…us kid.”
EB
Choo owed 102 million over five. Kemp 74 million over four. Choo probably has the worst contract in the game right now.
charles stevens
nevermind.
Lance
While I appreciate the passion of Tulo fans, I gotta look at him as the GM of another team and ask: Why would I want a 30 year old, often injured shortstop (who has played in 150+ games in a season twice in 10 years) and whose stats are inflated by Coors field AND is owed over $90 million dollars? He’s having a nice season but I’m not going to give up top prospects and I want the Rockies to pick up a lions share of that contract.
therealryan
The real question to ask yourself as a competing GM is, Do I really want a top SS and am I prepared to pay the free agent price or trade for Tulo? You would be getting Tulo for his age 31-35 seasons on a 5/$98m contract with an $11m team option for his age 36 season. Here is a comparison to what Tulo would cost on the open market.
Last season, Ian Desmond turned down $107m extension and there was talk that if he had a typical season this year he could be looking at $150m+ in free agency this offseason. Desmond is only one year younger than Tulositzki and Desmond’s best season would be Tulo’s 7th best season, even including all of his injuries. You would have mostly likely also had to guarantee Desmond through his age 36 or 37 seasons.
Hanley Ramirez was an oft injured SS who was a lesser hitter and much, much worse defensive player than Tulo. He signed a 4/$88m contract for his age 31-34 seasons with a vesting option that could push it to 5/$110 if he stays relatively healthy in 2017-18. Many think he took a lesser deal because he wanted to play in Boston.
Tulowitzki, with all of his injuries is still one of the top SS in MLB. Even when you adjust for Coors Field, Tulo has been the 3rd best hitting SS this season and has been much better over the past month and half. With the rising cost of a win on the open market, his contract could very easily be seen as a bargain as soon as this year.
EB
Makes no sense to trade elite prospects for a guy making twenty million a year that can’t stay on the field. And it makes no sense for the Rockies to be paying all this money to a guy when they are terrible. It is just a bad allocation of resources.
