JULY 28: Not only are the Rangers in contact with the Padres regarding Ross and Cashner, they’re discussing the pair with San Diego as much as they’re discussing Hamels with the Phillies, according to T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com (Twitter link).
JULY 26: Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported yesterday that the 47-50 Rangers were mostly seeking players who could help beyond 2015. Today, Wilson writes (Twitter links) that according to GM Jon Daniels, the Rangers are out of the market for top rental players, although they could pursue minor trades for impending free agents. The Rangers have, of course, lately been strongly connected to Cole Hamels, but Hamels is under contract for several seasons beyond this one.
The team has recently had discussions with the Padres about Andrew Cashner and Tyson Ross, Wilson writes. Cashner is under control through 2016, Ross through 2017. Ross, who has more years of control remaining and is a strikeout pitcher with an excellent ground ball rate, appears especially likely to require a significant return. The two pitchers were, until recently, frequently connected to the Astros, although Houston would seem less likely to acquire either of them now that they’ve traded for Scott Kazmir.
Math&Baseball
Makes sense if Preller were to trade Cashner or Ross to Texas- they get a pitcher that’s more than a rental and Preller gets guys he’s very familiar with.
Matt Galvin
Late Tonight or sometime tomorrow Hamels a Ranger so leaves Dodgers with one less option hopes the Tigers.

Guess you meant later some other night.

Cashner (2.63 at home, 4.16 away) and Ross (2.92 at home, 4.28 away) are products of Petco in my opinion. A guy like Hamels is just about even home (3.26) and away (3.33). I’d rather take the shot at Hamels honestly. The price is steeper but the odds of Hamels being quality is also much higher.
No Big League Choo For Yu
My thoughts, too.
Martin H.
This year Ross has it the other way with his Home/Road stats for ERA: 4.47 at Home, and 2.69 at Road.
Weird isn’t it?
RedRooster
They actually brought the fences in during the offseason and PETCO is now one of the most homer-friendly parks in baseball. Also, Ross hasn’t given up a single home run since like April so you have no point.
cookiemonster
tyson ross isnt even averaging 6 innings per start, that scares me the most…
bdoo
Yet on pace to throw more then 200 innings and has a ground ball rate of 60% plus
cookiemonster
exactly 0 projection systems have him reaching 200 innings.
justinept
Sounds like a smarter move to give up less for Ross, then roll the dice in free agency than it does to give up a ton for Hamels right now. No doubt Hamels is great, but the cost to acquire is just too much given the landscape of the upcoming FA market.
No Big League Choo For Yu
I don’t think they were in the rental market to begin with? Their plans always seemed to be a controllable player (pitcher in particular) to pair with the team next year when Yu comes back.
woolcorp
Hamels or bust!
charles stevens
Not interested in Petco pitchers. Those two guys have mediocre written all over them.
RedRooster
So then how come Tyson Ross and Ian Kennedy have better road stats than home stats??
gammaraze
Sample size. or rather, bad “luck” at home this year. Look at his 2 previous years in Petco. Nearly a 2.00 ERA difference between home and road

Cardinals get Fielder and $30MM, Rangers get Cashner, Padres get Rob Kaminsky, Jacob Wilson, and Tyler Lyons.
Brixton
Cardinals need a rental 1B option. They have Matt Adams coming back for 2016.
stl_cards16 2
Matt Adams is a league average 1B, at best. If an upgrade presents itself that would move him back to the bench next season, so be it. I really doubt the Cardinals are interested in Fielder, but it’s interesting.
charles stevens
Not interested Cashner. Definitely not interested in giving away Fielder and paying his salary.
No Big League Choo For Yu
The Rangers wouldn’t bite. The Rangers MAY be more inclined to do that trade if no money exchanged hands, but only because they have Moreland as the everyday 1b. I also wouldn’t see the Cardinals wanting Fielder with no option to put him at the DH spot.
justinept
Rangers are looking ahead to next year. I’m pretty sure they see Fielder as a huge part of that.
charles stevens
The only thing San Diego has I’m interested in is Justin Upton and he’ll be a free agent in a few months. Sorry AJ
seamaholic 2
Careful with Ross. Highest slider rate in the majors, iirc, among starters. He’s an injury waiting to happen.
bdoo
People have been saying that since last year still nothing. He’s even talked about his slider being a natural release for him that’s why he can throw it so much.
Brixton
Angels have interest in David Murphy. ummm
No Big League Choo For Yu
NOOOO. Always a fan favorite in Texas. I wouldn’t want to see him on the other side.
Brixton
Royals showing interest in Martin Prado, for 2B, i would assume.
stl_cards16 2
Who needs Twitter? We have Brixton
bbatardo
Ross hasn’t given up a home run in like 16 straight starts. He’d be perfect for Texas in that hitters park
cookiemonster
greinke didn’t give up a run in 44 innings that must be his true talent level.
cookiemonster
cashners from texas, i can see that going down.
Bronx Bombers
After losing 21 to 5 to the Yankees, I can see why they had a change of heart.
Gambit1193
Lol that game was something else haha
pimpdaddy
Ross and cashner to the rangers, prospects to philly and hamels and profar to san diego
Matt Galvin
Maybe and Price/Simon to Rangers?
lamuga326
To make much needed improvements to the Rangers, they need to trade Andrus or Choo, if not both. I think it will be easier to trade Andrus. They need pitching and lots of it. I could see a 4 team trade with Texas, Philly, Cubs, and San Diego.
gammaraze
As a Rangers fan, I have no interest in Ross or Cashner. I would rather keep the prospects and re-sign Yovani Gallardo.
