Angels interim GM Bill Stoneman didn’t make many big midseason deals as the team’s GM from 1999 through 2007, but he’s open to making moves this month, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register writes. “It doesn’t matter if it’s July or January, if it helps you, you do it,” says Stoneman. “If it’s not going to help you, you don’t do it just because people are hoping you do something.” It probably isn’t surprising that Stoneman’s comments sound a bit broad — not only do GMs tend to be circumspect this time of year, but Stoneman will be sharing duties with assistant GM Matt Klentak since he’s so new to the job. Here’s more from throughout the big leagues.
- Brandon Beachy will make his 2015 debut as the Dodgers’ starter on Saturday, as Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports notes (on Twitter). It will be Beachy’s first start since August 2013 with the Braves. He’s had Tommy John surgery twice since 2012. The Dodgers signed Beachy to a one-year, $2.75MM deal last offseason knowing he would miss the start of the season. The deal also includes a 2016 option for a base of $3MM, a total that will increase by $500K when Beachy takes the mound tomorrow. The value of the option will increase another $500K with Beachy’s fifth, tenth, 15th, 18th and 21st starts. Too much of the season has gone by for Beachy to start 18 or 21 games, unless the Dodgers do something highly unusual with their rotation. He could, however, make 15 starts, which would increase the value of the option to a total of $5MM. Also, he’ll get a $250K buyout tied to the option when he completes ten innings of work this year.
- Texas US Senator John Cornyn asked the Department of Justice about the Cardinals’ hacking scandal in a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing Wednesday, Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle writes. “I hope that FBI and DOJ will take the ongoing investigation into any criminal activity seriously and ensure that any wrongdoing is fully investigated and prosecuted,” Cornyn said, according to a press release from his office. The Cardinals have already fired scouting director Chris Correa in the wake of the scandal, and the FBI continues to investigate. A Cardinals employee or employees reportedly accessed the Astros’ data system repeatedly and without their consent.

Time and place Mr. William. This is a baseball forum, not a place for you to start political debates.

Ha…only debate I was having was internal….over what took so long to hear from.a grandstanding politician.

Please keep the political nonsense off this site!! This is just about the only site left that doesn’t get into a political debate with every posting.. Let’s keep it that way!!
Lance
maybe if MLB had Obamacare, so many pitchers wouldn’t need tommy john surgery!!!! 🙂
alex navarrette
I don’t know why, but I laughed way too hard at this comment.

It’s amazing the Dodgers still haven’t acquired decent pitching to bolster the rotation.

Teams think they can get Urias, Joc, or Seager
Philliesfan4life
I really think they go after Hamels and they deal Urias because the phillies will eat some of the contract to get the return they want
BlueSkyLA
Yet. A comfortable lead going into the All Star break gives them the opportunity to see what they’ve got in Beachy.
thecoffinnail
Beachy is a quality pitcher when healthy.. If he remains healthy and the Dodgers keep Greinke or sign someone who has something close to his abilities they will have a very solid rotation that will be more than adequate next year..
#1 Kershaw
#2 Greinke (or someone equal)
#3 Ryu
#4 McCarthy
#5 Beachy
Plus, if either Beachy or McCarthy go down Urias will be ready to take their place.. That kid is only 18 and handling himself nicely in AA this year.. He just came off the DL (benign mass in his eye) and was dominant.. He might even get a call up in September and join the bullpen.. Next year the Dodgers will have 2 aces and 3 solid #3’s with another potential ace in Urias.. They don’t need anyone else.. A cheap solid rental like Kazmir would be perfect to finish this year.. With Kershaw and Greinke why would they need a Cueto or Price? Granted, Greinke is going to definitely opt out but that doesn’t mean he is leaving the Dodgers.. He will Just resign with a year or two being added to his deal.. Something similar to what Sabathia did a few years ago..
Philliesfan4life
Greinke is going to opt out and I think they end up trading for Hamels, no way they trade for Cueto.
BlueSkyLA
Hamels didn’t do much to improve his trade value last night. Cueto I agree is likely out of reach.
BlueSkyLA
Ryu should be back the beginning of next season but McCarthy probably not. Recovery from TJ, minimum, one year, so May-June is probably more realistic. Beachy gets his first start today so we will see, but if he’s even close to as good as he was in Atlanta, the Dodgers will have made a very smart move by taking a flier on him. Kazmir I like as a drop-in replacement. Cheap I am not so sure but unlike Hamels he probably won’t cost a major prospect.
Melvin McMurf
stoneman has never made a deal
Philliesfan4life
Well they do need to make a deal to get a couple bats, I hope they can get Parra or Adam Lind, but I bet both won’t come cheap.
thecoffinnail
I am really hoping they get Lind.. Can you imagine the numbers he could put up being protected by Trout and Pujols? If not Lind, then I hope they go after Prado.. He seems to be the type of player that excels on good teams and slumps on bad ones..
Philliesfan4life
Prado would be the perfect grinder type bat in the angels line up, I was watching High Heat with Chris Russo yesterday and his guest brought up a good point, saying that greinke will opt out of his contract and that it will be a battle between LA, the angels and dodgers go into a bidding war for him, But I doubt Arte will go after him, just like he didn’t the last time when he was a free agent.
Dock_Elvis
Could be a bidding war,.but Greinke does like to bat.
Philliesfan4life
He does like to bat but If the angels do enough at the deadline , and there could be a way to convince him back to the angels, But the angels do have a lot of depth in the pitching department, one thing that Dipoto did a great job of. I say trade C.J Wilson if they can because he will be a free agent after next year and so will weaver But Weaver I hope they keep him around.
alex navarrette
While Greinke is an asset to any rotation, I’d actually prefer that the Angels sign a bat or two in the offseason, rather than using our minimal funds on more pitching. I know most people assume the Angels have no minor league talent, but we are super deep in pitching talent.
Philliesfan4life
I agree before dipoto left , he made sure that he built up the farm on pitching talent. But at the deadline they need to get a leadoff hitter or a good bat to protect pujols. And in the offseason they should look at adding Upton , Cespedes or Heyward.
