The Padres and Indians have agreed to a minor swap that will send lefty reliever Marc Rzepczynski to San Diego for outfielder Abraham Almonte, tweets ESPN’s Keith Law.
Rzepczynski, better known as Scrabble, has pitched to a 4.43 ERA with 10.6 K/9 and 4.4 BB/9 this season. For his career, the 29 year old (30 later this month) has posted a 3.81 ERA with 8.4 K/9 and 3.9 BB/9 across seven seasons. Rzepczynski wasn’t mentioned much in trade speculation this month but the Padres apparently had their eye on him to bolster their bullpen.
Almonte, 26, has appeared in 31 games for the Padres this season with a rather underwhelming slash line of .204/.271/.259. He has fared much better in 61 games for Triple-A El Paso, however, hitting .275/.361/.414.

Fair deal. A fringe-40-man outfielder for a reliever. Kinda worried tho cuz the last time we traded with the Indians ended up being disastrous.

Scrabble’s solid.
Vandals Took The Handles
Not if he pitches to a RH batter.

Earth-shattering. Way to go, AJ! You have effectively left us with:
A) Upton who we will not be able to sign because we have no taste for big contracts
B) Kennedy who has little up-side left
C) Ross who now knows he is not part of the long-term plan.
Oh, and we still suck.
Oh, and Preller is not a rock star GM…just a Prince Charles look-a-like who doesn’t know what he is doing.
Here those crickets chirping…those are for you, your royal highness
RedRooster
At least we get an extra first rounder next year for Upton
zerobs
Doesn’t he have to be offered a deal first?
libertyfighter
Upton would never accept the qualifying offer, so in all likelihood, what was offered for Upton was not much better then a first round draft pick.
petcopadre
You would have preferred getting rid of our best pitchers? Who would have pitched in their place? You would have preferred getting rid of our best offensive players? Who would have hit in their place? We would have received lesser and unproven players. I’m glad Preller shot for the moon and pulled back when he didn’t get what he wanted. Ron
Fowler has said he’s going to increase payroll next year. With these players in place, we only need a few more players. Good job sticking to your guns AJ.
Portland Micro-Brewers
Seems early to bury AJ. I agree on Ian Kennedy. You likely can’t offer 30 year old Ian a $15-16 million dollar 1 year deal with Price, Cueto, Greinke, and maybe Zimmermann on the free agent market. Kennedy’s agent would be foolish to let him walk away from $15 mil while pitching in Petco. I’d wager that Kennedy wouldn’t mind staying in his home state only hours away from his childhood home. Preller is hoping for August injuries to a contenders staff.
East Coast Bias
The biggest surprise of the trade deadline has to be the Padres not trading anyone of note.
cookiemonster
lol they bought. silly silly preller. ruining jed hoyer and josh byrns work.
Injediwetrust
Right cause everyone prior to Preller said how the Padres overvalue their prospects and the farm system is not that good. Even the might Jed and Mr Byrnes made mistakes. Kluber anyone? Carlos Quinten anyone? All week long people were calling for the match to light the fire and the front office to a person held firm at “Don’t be surprised if we make no moves”. It shouldn’t be shocking at all.

..anytime you have the chance to field a team featuring Melvin Eugene Upton the III, I mean what more can you ask for from a GM
Sign all the Cubans
Definitely puts them over the top.

Petcopadre, if they trade those parts, do you not think we get something in return?
