2:16pm: The Cubs now appear to be leaning toward striking a smaller trade for a relief arm, Peter Gammons of GammonsDaily.com tweets. He adds that there are strong denials that a three-team scenario was ever considered, as Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald also has reported.
1:45pm:Â San Diego and Chicago are primarily working directly together on a deal, tweets Nightengale, who says that they may not need the involvement of a third team to swing a major deal.
1:22pm: Chicago “would love” to swing a deal for Tyson Ross and Craig Kimbrel, Bob Nightengale of USA Today tweets. It’s not entirely clear how realistic that scenario is, but it appears the Cubs at least have interest in pursuing it.
12:18pm:Â The Padres, Red Sox, and Cubs have discussed an unspecified three-team deal, Jon Morosi of FOX Sports tweets. ESPN.com’s Buster Olney tweeted earlier that there was industry speculation of discussions between the clubs, noting that there were many potential fits between them.
The parameters of a deal remain unreported at this time, but both Chicago (here and here) and Boston have been heavily connected to San Diego in recent days. The Padres are reportedly looking for a shortstop, and both Starlin Castro and Javier Baez of the Cubs have been mentioned as possible pieces that could be dangled. Meanwhile, the Cubs and Red Sox have frequently been said to be interested in controllable pitching.
mwk89
Could be one the biggest trades this deadline yet if this pans out, with some of the names involved
bogaerts
Ross, Buttry to Chicago
Sandoval, Baez, Guerra, Happ to San Diego
Kimbrel, Shields, Gyorko to Boston
billbrasky
Boston would be very lucky to get bailed out on Sandoval, but taking Sheilds is one way it could work.
Bronx Bombers
Shields would get lit up in Fenway
mdbaseball05
Wonder if Castro would be one going to the Padres. They need a SS and the Cubs are said to be trying to trade him.
angryduck
Baez is a SS by trade, has a cannon, maybe the best true SS in the Cubs organization… SD will want him over Castro…… we’ll have trouble moving Castro
raef715
i would think gyorko would end up with the Cubs at second base..
they cant trade Happ already, right?
jammin502
Right
angryduck
Cubs have plenty of guys that can play 2B, they don’t need Gyorko
angryduck
plus if we aren’t able to move Castro, then Russell is our starting 2B with Castro at short. I’d HATYE to lose Baez.. if he’s learned some pitch recognition, he’s a potential HOF’er with that bat speed (Gary Sheffield/Griffey Jr. like)
Injediwetrust
I would take that from a Pads standpoint. Book it
angryduck
Cubs need to fix the 9th inning, I’d think Kimbrel would have to be part of the deal, Haren may be a bargaining chip, packaged with Baez, or Torres (who probably isn’t MLB ready yet)
yanks1990
And Cashman is still doing NOTHING. Does he not realize this team has holes.
billbrasky
His team is in first place and has played sustainably good baseball all year. There’s not nearly as much pressure on him as there is on AA.
Hentai King
LOL, you don’t only make moves for the regular season you make moves for the postseason as well. Yanks lost Nova and Pineda and are just sitting on their hands today. Good luck in the postseason with CC starting game 2 but it’s fine cause you had a 7 game lead in the division!
Gambit1193
Nova is starting Sunday. He’s not DL’d
max l
His team is in first place by like 6 games! I believe they have the 3rd largest division lead in baseball after the Royals & Cardinals who have run away from their 2 divisions since opening day.
billbrasky
I’d love to be a fly on the wall with these three (four, if Theo & Hoyer are both involved) negotiating.
clutchcutch22
Have to believe Upton, Ross, and possibly others invloved from SD. Could be some big prospects going east and west.
MB923
@yanks1990 , do you not realize that every team in baseball has holes somewhere ? Good Lord.
Wonder who the mystery players are. About 2.5 hours to find out.
cwh1983
As a Red Sox fan, we need some good news haha. And something to help us look forward to the 2016 season!!!
Draven Moss
If the Red Sox are trying to dump Sandoval, then I am fine with it. But hopefully it doesn’t include getting Shields back.
iowarockeyes
What other way to do you see them dumping Sandoval? It is usually a bad contract for bad contract change of scenery type of trade.
billbrasky
You should prefer Shields to Sandoval. You need pitching and Shields should be a solid mid-rotation arm at worst. He’s an AL East guy.
Sandoval is a terrible fit in Boston.
Bronx Bombers
Shields has horrible numbers at Fenway. 5.42 ERA in 74.2 innings
jtm2889
Not a bad deal suggested by Bogaerts. Although I imagine that San Diego may want a little more considering they would be giving up three-plus years of Kimbrel and two-plus of Ross, plus taking on the bad contract of Sandoval. But all in all a fair suggestion. Happ would of course have to be a PTBNL as he was just drafted.
MB923
If I was a Red Sox fan, I’d want Porcello gone ASAP more than anyone
billbrasky
Really? I’d be praying for Panda to get moved. Not only is he a poor fit, he turned a good player (Hanley) into one with no value.
Draven Moss
For me, it is Sandoval. Getting rid of Sandoval would put Hanley at 3rd and helps fix the defence to a certain extent. Porcello has been bad too, but he is still young and is definitely capable of rebounding. They need pitching too, so they might as well hang on to him rather than dump him.
cwh1983
Seriously… The Dodgers in 2012 did an unprecedented move of assuming the contracts of Gonzalez, Crawford & Beckett. Which enabled the Sox front office to regroup. Just 2 short years later, they dolled out big contracts to Hanley, Pablo & Porcello. Once I see that Porcello is starting, I’m like “How bad will he be tonight?”
billbrasky
Porcello should be fine. Not great, not worth the money, but fine. Hanley is actually a good contract if he plays third.
Sandoval is the poison pill. That signing never made sense.
adyo4552
Sure it did. The Sox were getting replacement-level production out of 3B last season, and they went out and got a guy in Sandoval who was coming off a 3.4 fWAR season. How were the Sox to know he would turn into a -.6 fWAR player so far in 2015? Hindsight is 20/20, but I don’t think anyone predicted such a precipitous drop in production from Sandoval. Furthermore, I think that since his career numbers have always been significantly higher than they are now, and he is only 28, we are likely to see some positive regression to the mean out of him in the future. One last point – Some have suggested he ruined Hanley’s signing by taking 3B away from him. Well, Sandoval can play 1B next season, so aside from the LF experiment for one year I don’t see it as neutering Ramirez the way it is currently being spun.
billbrasky
They had already signed Hanley Ramirez. The 3B “problem” was already fixed.
He could not be expected to age well, already had fringy defense. And Sandoval is worth almost nothing at 1B, so that solves nothing. He’s not a good enough hitter.
Alonzo
I always thought both teams (Sox-Padres) would match-up great. Sandoval-Shields makes almost too much sense. Shields is AL proven and Sandoval is NL (west coast) proven. It needs to happen, maybe the Sox kick in some money.
And as far as Ross goes, Boston definitely likes him, but I don’t know what the Padres would want. Owens/Johnson as headliner + young SS in Marrero + JBJ (would be a huge asset in Petco)
Don’t see why the Sox would want Kimbrel. I know he is under contract beyond this season, but they also have Uehara.
Let’s hope something comes to fruition.
cwh1983
But Uehara will be 41 next season. 10 out of 10 times, I trade Uehara in a package that will send to Boston the cost controlled stud Kimbrel
pkels2
Dan Haren?? WTF Cubs. He’s barely a step up from Beeler.
mike156
Let’s see if those goes past the deadline. In the past, when help was needed on timing for certain transactions, Mr. Selig sometimes provided it. Wonder if Manfred has the same approach
raef715
he did?
we might just not find out about the details til after the deadline but im not aware of the commish pulling a favor.
sean1031
Joe Maddon wants James Shields.
Sox will end up Ross and Kimbrel.
Cubs will end up with Shields and either Bucholtz/Uehara
SD will bring in Baez and Jackie Bradley Jr. And minor leaguers
jtm2889
The problem with Porcello is that already, 2/3 of a season into a 5 year deal, he has basically descended into, “Vernon Wells territory”; he is untradeable. Sandoval on the other hand still has value and a swap with San Diego for Shields makes sense. The problem with Uhehara is that he is 39 and can literally break down any moment. Kimbrel is a much safer play. A potential deal could see:
San Diego gets Sandoval, Devers, Marco Hernandez and Pat Light.
Chicago gets Uehara.
Boston gets Shields, Kimbrel, Vogelbach and Catarini.
Deal could be expanded to include Ross to Chicago.
raef715
i still think Kimbrel ends up in Chicago in this scenario; Red Sox have a lot more pressing needs than a high priced closer.
azamolina
Red Sox hardly find another team so stupid as they want to acquire sandoval with such poor numbers and with such a high salary
YourDaddy
Why is it that nothing Buster Olney says ever comes to pass? You would think he would be right every once in a while, you know?
chive
Substitute CLE for SD.
CLE gets: Castro (move to 3B), Coyle, Owens, and McKinnley
CHC gets: Carrasco, Swisher
BOS gets: Raburn, Lake, Hendricks, McAllister
Who hangs up?
Vandals Took The Handles
Cleveland has a young 3B that is their best looking young ballplayer in years. He’s already better then Castro.
chive
Lol I don’t know what you’re smoking but Gio is not better than Castro. If Gio ever hits .300 in a season I’ll gladly eat my words…
Vandals Took The Handles
Have you seen Gio play 3B? He’s a future gold glover. I saw him an AA and was knocked out by him. That young man is a ballplayer – he does everything well. Francona is knocked out by him. I was surprise it took him 3 weeks to realize what he had.
chive
That’s all well and good but your offense is in the bottom of the AL… At some point you’ve got to address that.
And just for the record I’m a Cubs fan but I live in Cleveland and have adopted the Tribe as my second team. I want them to win as much as anyone…
raef715
who? urshela?
miggypop44
are you talking about Santana? Good ball player and better than Castro, but hardly their “best looking young ballplayer in years.” I’d say Kipnis and Brantley are better and they are currently on the roster.
Los Calcetines Rojos
@chive Boston easily. Junior Lake is nothing special, McAllister is bullpen arm, and raburn is fourth of on a contender, only thing of interest is hendricks and he is a no.3 tops. More prospects need to be involved there on all sides. I don’t see why boston would even want to be in on this trade though tbh
chive
Admittedly Lake is better suited going to CLE. Doesn’t Boston need bullpen help? McAllister has looked great in that role. Plus someone to add depth in Raburn and a young controllable arm? I would think that’d be fair for the price of Owens and Coyle…
daver4470
You don’t trade an a-list left-handed 23-year-old starting pitcher for bullpen help.
justinept
Gotta imagine that Kyle Hendricks is being discussed heavily in this trade – not as the main piece, but as a good piece.
Vandals Took The Handles
In any 3-way trade with these GM’s, I’m taking Epstein / Hoyer in a runaway.
daver4470
I’m not sure why the Red Sox would need to be involved in a Cubs deal for Kimbrell and Ross. Because certainly Ross would be one of the Padre offerings that the Red Sox would be seriously interested in….
It would be amusing if this somehow involved Lester being dealt back to Boston. (Not gonna happen… but it would be very amusing!)
gettinlm
Cubs and Cubs fans need to calm down. Only a trade with long-term benefits should be sought. The Cubs, at best, are looking at a one-game wildcard playoff. Not worth putting a lot of eggs in that basket just for a 2-month rental player.
jtm2889
@Chive…that deal is an awful deal for Boston. Owens is a better prospect than Daniel Norris who just got dealt for Price (Owens has a career 3.30 ERA compared to Norris’ 4.30 ERA in the minors). Lake and Raburn have no value for Boston as they already have backups like Holt, Rutledge and Jackie Bradley.
petfoodfella
I really think Castro has to be on the move. If it’s a significant trade, etc.
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
Cubs need Baez at 2nd if Castro is traded. Unless they get a. Power hitting 2B.
justinept
Will someone tell me why the Padres are desperate for a SS, have been connected to the Cubs forever, and no one has once mentioned Gleybar Torres in a potential deal? The guy is significantly better than Mateo.
FrankRoo
I don’t think Torres is on the table. Cubs seem to love him from what I’ve read. Granted what do you do with Torres if you think Russell is you shortstop for the next 6+ years?
justinept
I think the Cubs love him, too. But they know they have to give up a SS in this deal, and they don’t want to give up Baez – so wouldn’t that make Torres the logical target? His name hasn’t even been mentioned anywhere. It’s a bit nutso.
anoff
of course the Cubs would “love” to acquire a team controlled all-star SP and the 2nd best closer in baseball. But do they want to pay the king’s ransom that (should) cost? Come on Preller, stick to your guns, and commit some highway robbery!
cookiemonster
well if you want to use the team controlled all star argument we have starlin castro…
mrnatewalter
The guy who was robbed in the off-season becomes the robber at the deadline… in the words of Michael Scott, “Oh how the turn tables”
justinept
So the Phills have to take back Harrison’s contract to get prospects back for Hamels… but the Padres don’t have to take back any money to get prospects in return for Kimbrel? I don’t follow Preller’s logic here.
justinept
Cubs are likely offering either Baez or Torres along with Hendricks, and either McKinney or Edwards for Ross/Kimbrel. All they’re asking is for the Padres to take back the Castro deal so as to off-set half the money returning to the Cubs in the deal. That’s par for the course in prospect trades. The only way teams pay the totality of acquired contracts anymore is if they’re not giving any prospects back in return.
john59
hard to trust Cherington’s judgement anymore, afraid he will try to overdo to wipe out the big errors he made lately.
yanks1990
And Cashman does nothing still.
cookiemonster
i see aaron harang in your future.
Bronx Bombers
Deal probably fell apart when Boston didn’t want to part with anyone from their untouchable farm system.
FrankRoo
They’ll wait for Bradley to get into Maybin territory before they consider trading him.
aurecas
Nope.
justacubsfan
Castro, Duane Underwood, Carl Edwards Junior, Billy Mckinney, Alcantara, Hendricks, pierce johnson, + Lake or Vogelbach to Padres for Craig Kimbrell + Tyson Ross to Cubs
cookiemonster
lol with hendricks in there you dont need underwood and pierce johnson, thats massive overpay territory
FrankRoo
Indeed. Hendricks won’t get moved unless the Cubs get two starters back. He’s probably going to be as good or better than Haren down the stretch.
Right not it seems like they will go with Haren and Hendricks in the rotation and try and get perhaps Capps, Kimbrel or Benoit. Maybe they take on Gyorko along with Kimbrel to lighten the cost.
seamaholic 2
Are the Padres gonna do nothing, after all that?
drewm
K-Rod is available
SupremeZeus
Tommy Hunter to Cubs?
coleham
Breaking news: Cubs decided they didn’t want anybody after all and went home. We was just reporting stuff so we could get more clicks on Mlbtraderumors. Sorry
citizen
cubs got hunter from orioles for junior lake
citizen
cubs get hunter from orioles for jr. lake
