The Orioles have released outfielder Delmon Young, the club announced. Young had been designated for assignment on July 1.
Baltimore had indicated that it was optimistic of finding a trade partner for Young, as it did previously with Alejandro De Aza. Despite the fact that the veteran is only owed a shade over $1MM the rest of the way, the O’s were apparently not able to find a taker for a piece of that contract.
Young will surely draw interest on the free agent market. Though the 29-year-old is in the midst of a mediocre .270/.289/.339 campaign at present, he slashed a highly useful .302/.337/.442 in part-time play last year.
Despite him not being that good of a guy for the clubhouse I would think a team would still be interested in picking him up.
He actually was a good teammate in Baltimore. It’s tough to see him go. That ALDS double in the 8th against Detroit set him as an Oriole for life in my opinion.
He was a great teammate in Bmore. Also always first in last out everyday
The Showalter Orioles are maybe the most guarded and careful about team chemistry. And according to all reports, Delmon was a great teammate and good character guy in the clubhouse.
I think when he was younger he was more immature and brooded about wanting to be a starter and get special treatment. Being released a few times, on the fringes of baseball, and having to work hard for opportunities seems to have humbled him into a better makeup guy.
Very useful guy as a RH half of a platoon. Wonder if he could play 1B?
Young has had an 1.000+ OPS in THREE different post season series, plus huge hits for both Tampa and Baltimore in two other post season games.
He is basically the same as Panda in terms of regular season v. post season.
Delmon hits like everyone expects him to, ONLY when its the playoffs. He carried Detroit a couple of years. Then he burned them in the playoffs as an Oriole. Just have to suffer through his regular season play.
Maybe the Twins should bring him back on a minor league deal.
Delmon, come join the Mariners. You would instantly be the second best hitter on the team!
Anyone else notice that Joe Gunkel, the player the O’s got for DeAza, is doing a pretty solid job at AA. Maybe this will take a little of the sting off of the Miller-for-Rodriguez trade.
Yeah I thought the O’s were looking good on that trade but then looked at De Aza’s numbers… he’s hitting .306/.352/.588 with a .940 OPS in 28 games played for Boston… although I think we all know regression is on its way he seems like the classic change in scenery guy like at the end of last season when he hit well for the O’s down the stretch after being traded. Hoping Gunkel can possibly turn into something for the O’s in the future though.
Sad to see Delmon go but he got a great second chance with Baltimore. Might have been better to ship off Snider or Lough, but both have a wider range than Delmon. Parmelee and Reimold are too important down the stretch as well. Docket might be looking to see what he can keep in light of the looming FA departures. Delmon is a solid player who will help out another team for sure.
