We already collected one set of reactions to the trade of Johnny Cueto to the Royals. Here are a few more odds and ends from the deal.
- In Brandon Finnegan, Cody Reed and John Lamb, the Reds are receiving three potential big-league starters, MLB.com’s Jim Callis writes. The Reds sacrificed a draft pick as a result of trading Cueto, but the three lefties they received have more than enough talent to make up for it. The Royals, meanwhile, traded from solid minor league pitching depth.
- The Yankees scouted Cueto for five weeks, George A. King III of the New York Post writes. The Yankees and Reds also had brief discussions involving Cueto and Yankees starter Ivan Nova, but the talks did not develop. It is, of course, highly unlikely that Nova could have been centerpiece of any Cueto trade. The Yankees have thus far been unwilling to trade top prospects like Aaron Judge, Luis Severino or Greg Bird.
- The Dodgers did have talks with the Reds about Cueto, GM Farhan Zaidi tells CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman (Twitter links). Zaidi thinks the Dodgers will be able to consummate some other trade before Friday’s deadline, presumably one involving starting pitching. Within the Dodgers’ clubhouse, Heyman writes, some players were disappointed that the team didn’t get Cueto, and would like the team to pursue David Price now that Cueto is off the market.

Maybe David Murphy and SP to Blue Jays or Gisnts becuase he is gaining interest among Angels and others per Morsi,Rosenthal.

those Dodgers players are getting spoiled, it seems.
Vandals Took The Handles
Not spoiled at all.
This Dodgers ownership has set high standards and high goals. The players are going 1st class and want to continue to go 1st class. And they want to go to the World Series. This year.
mrshyguy99
maybe not spoiled just tired of always losing in the playoffs.

I know they think Urias will be a stud, but why not trade him for Hamels?
Hamels is proven winner, not a rental and there’s a chance Greinke opts out
Who wants to face Kershaw Greinke Hamels in playoffs?
jays4life 2
The Cardinals.
stl_cards16 2
Not me. Price instead of Hamels is even worse. If they add another top of the rotation arm, that team is just scary.
jays4life 2
Cards don’t lose to those guys in the playoffs.Kershaw fears the Cards.

The Angels used to say the same thing about the Yankees in the playoffs. Then 2009 happened. I’m sure one year the Twins will beat the Yankees or the Yankees over the Tigers too.
dbeattie
Because there is every chance Urias will be as good if not better than Hamels and significantly cheaper. There’s also a chance he’ll be ready for a Sept call up, if not then next year
sigurd 2
Urias is 18 and has proved nothing at the big league level. Saying he will be equal or better than Hamels, who is one of the top 10-15 best pitchers in baseball and has proven it year after year is a pretty big leap.
dbeattie
I’m saying he has that upside and if the Dodgers are so willing to hold on to him they obviously think he’s worth more than Hamels decline years
corrosive23
People thought that about Zach Lee as well. And look what happened.
BoldyMinnesota
That’s a good argument. The dodgers are basically hoping Urias turns out to be a pitcher like Hamels anyways so why not make the deal that can help now
dbeattie
I also get the feeing, just from what I’ve read here and stuff that the Dodgers aren’t overly high on Hamels I think they much prefer Cueto and price
mrshyguy99
it because the dodger value young players just as much as they value proven vets. if joc prove anything they arent about to give up young talent.
mrshyguy99
why give up a young talent just to win now they have a team to win they are only maybe a piece or two away and kershaw not having his same old playoff woes. you got to think about the future just as much as the now. down the road urias will come in handle. plus look at the pitchers that came up. bill before injures hurt his career, kershaw, and the bull pen have guys who came though the farm, paco, jansen etc.
aawillsher
The link to Cody Reed is to Arizona’s Reed, not KCR’s.
El Duderino
Not sure I’d classify it as “fallout.”
dbeattie
Looks like the Tigers are about to drop 2 of 3 to the Red Sox. Surely it’s time for them to sell
vaguelyaware
As they should. They aren’t competitive currently. May as well offload some of the expiring contracts and try to make a quick reload
Matt Galvin
Davis,Soria to Giants for Sanchez and others?
Avila to Rays?
Simon to Cubs for Baez and so on?
Price to Dodgers for Lee,Delon and so on?
Crepesdes to Mets?
Kinsler to Yankees?
Victor Martinez to Astros?
dbeattie
If the Dodgers could have acquired price for Lee and De Leon you’d have to think they’d have pulled the trigger already
dbeattie
Also there’s no way the Cubs give up Baez to rent Simon
mrshyguy99
it be fun to see the dodgers get both price and Cespedes but i doubt that will happen. if anything the dodgers might only get price. plus ethier doing pretty well so unless they trade him there really no room for Cespedes
Ry.the.Stunner
When it says “the Reds are sacrificing a draft pick”, that just means they’re missing out on receiving an extra compensation round draft pick due to the whole qualifying offer thing, right? The article makes it sound like they’re actually losing a draft pick by trading Cueto, and I can’t think of why that would be.
El Duderino
Your understanding is spot on, rythestunner.
wahoomaniac
I don’t get the whole “three potential starters” thing to the Reds. Lamb has been remarkably injury prone and the two main pieces are projected as relievers by many. I mean, potentially, sure. Just doesn’t seem very likely is all.
