Phillies GM Ruben Amaro said Tuesday that he’s not under any pressure to make to make a trade and won’t be forced into moving a player, writes Todd Zolecki of MLB.com. Zolecki notes that Amaro is very likely posturing, but the GM implied that the Phillies could wait until the offseason to move some of their pieces. “We’ve debated here internally about when is the greatest value of some of these players, a number of them,” said Amaro. “When does that player become the most valuable asset? Again, a lot of it depends on who’s going to step up, and who’s going to satisfy some of the things that we’re trying to do in a trade. If someone does, and we feel like it’s the right thing to do, we’ll do it.” Amaro did, however, say that he “would like to do something” on the trade market.
More notes from the NL East to kick off Wednesday morning…
- Phillies right-hander Jonathan Pettibone may need another surgery, writes the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Jake Kaplan. The 24-year-old Pettibone is currently rehabbing from right shoulder surgery, but Amaro told reporters yesterday that he had to shut down a simulated game at the team’s spring complex in Clearwater early. The loss of Pettibone has been a notable one for a Phillies team that is thin on upper-level rotation depth; Pettibone tossed 100 1/3 innings of 4.04 ERA ball in his rookie season back in 2013.
- Jon Niese has posted stellar results of late, but Andy Martino of the New York Daily News writes that a run of six straight starts has done little to restore the trade value of the Mets lefty. “It changes nothing for me,” an NL exec told Martino. “Stuff has gotten lighter every year. The Mets are going to tell everyone it’s as good as ever to keep trade value high.” A second evaluator told Martino, “I would assume GMs wouldn’t overreact to recent performance, and would consider the long term picture along with health and the financial commitment.” Niese’s hot streak — he has a 2.41 ERA over his past six starts — came up in yesterday’s MLBTR Chat, though I offered a similar take; six starts does little to override a history of shoulder issues, and Niese’s secondary stats haven’t been as impressive as his ERA in that time anyhow.
- Many reports this offseason noted that the Marlins were interested in, if not close to acquiring Wade Miley prior to the Diamondbacks stepping back and eventually accepting another offer from the Red Sox. The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier spoke with GM-turned-manager Dan Jennings about his club’s interest in Miley: “We had conversations. The closeness, I don’t want to say, but we definitely had conversations,” said Jennings. One source indicated to Speier that the Marlins thought the deal was nearly complete before Boston swooped in.
- The Braves continue to work toward a deal with No. 14 overall pick Kolby Allard, assistant GM John Coppolella tells David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “We’re still going through the process, and we’re very hopeful that we can sign Kolby,” said Coppolella. “You would’ve like to have had him signed earlier, but you understand that it’s a process. I wouldn’t say there’s a holdup on his end or our end, we just haven’t reached the finish line yet.” O’Brien recently reported that there’s a “legit chance” that the Braves won’t ink Allard. He notes that there’s been some speculation that adviser Casey Close of Excel Sports has been seeking a bonus more in line with where Allard would’ve been drafted had a back injury not dropped his stock a bit. As I noted at the time of O’Brien’s initial report, the Braves can offer Allard about $3.462MM (which is $626K over slot) without incurring the loss of a pick.

Amaro “won’t be forced into moving a player”
“Trade me to a contender NOW!” – Papelbon yesterday

Paps comment means nothing. He’s in no position to force a trade. No Contender that wants him, can afford him. He continues to open his mouth, which reminds GM’s of the cancer that he is. I’m sure his comment makes the other Philly players feel great about their team and helps build that positive environment in the clubhouse. Just because they are in rebuild mode, doesn’t mean there can’t be a positive, lets improve attitude.
rct
Unless they get a good deal, I think the Mets are content to keep Niese. He’s only owed $9MM next year and 2017 and 2018 are both team options ($500k buyouts).
The Mets have Harvey, Syndergaard, Matz, deGrom, and Wheeler going forward. Due to injuries, injury histories, and innings limits, Niese will get plenty of starts next year and he’s a perfectly capable back-of-the-rotation starter.
Ideally, you’d like to get some hitting in return for Niese (because the Mets really need it), but Colon has been pretty bad this year as has Gee.
hojostache
The Mets going into the beginning of next year with a sub-4 ERA Jon Niese is not a horrible problem. Ideally he’d be traded, but Wheeler won’t be ready Opening Day and Jon is serviceable. It’d be interesting to see if Montero (assuming he gets healthy) pushes Jon for the #5 spot.
Out of place Met fan
Montero’s health is the key, if he is healthy and ramping up later this month I think you go ahead and deal Niese. Bring in a Norris on a 1 year rebuild deal in the offseason to push Montero, Bowman etal
If the shoulder issues linger best bet is to hold onto Niese, “better the devil you know”…
kingjenrry
There’s a strong chance that Fulmer’s already better than Niese at this point. I think it’s perfectly reasonable for the Mets to deal Niese in the off-season to clear the $9 million, use a guy making league minimum from within the organization to fill that role (Cessa? Montero? Gee? Fulmer? Bowman?), and reallocate that money towards fixing the offense.
metsfanlosingfaith61
Then just sign Colon – he is a workhorse and we can all see that he still has it in him. Granted we still have half the season to go, I would look to trade Niese now instead of the off-season for a bat. Dodgers and Cubs are looking and I am sure Chicago is going to be itching to deal and give up a little more in the coming weeks, especially since they are in the run for the playoffs, something they haven’t made in years.
hojostache
Typical Mets bashing article from Martino, who is a hack writer with a constant bone to pick with the team.
johnman718
Seriously, I don’t understand why Jon Niese is often referred to as injury prone. He may have some sort of issue with his shoulder, but over the past 5 years he’s averaged 170 IP. He is also on pace for 200IP this year. I don’t know the stats off the top of my head, but that seems to be way above average. He is a 4,5th starter on this team, but on most teams he would be the number 3 starter who is a lefty with a very fair contract….
rct
I think he gets the injury-prone label because he has some kind of injury every year that causes him to miss a few starts. It’s not fair, I agree, but he misses a minimum of a couple of starts every season.
Out of place Met fan
A lot of it is the shoulder, it is such a unpredictable situation and no one wants a $10M gamble that could turn into 2013 Johan. As prevalent as the elbow injuries have become, the rehab and return to form is much more common, giving a (maybe false) sense of mitigated risk
kingjenrry
On the flipside, Johan was also making well over $20 million a year. This guy’s making much less than that.

On what playoff contending team is Jon Niese a 3 starter?
johnman718
There are a few border line teams with potentially weak rotations. Pretty much the entire AL east, Twins, Rangers, Cubs, Giants, DBacks. All of these teams at the current moment are in the wild card race and could make a push with a little rotation reinforcement. I’m not saying that Niese would be hands down the 3rd best starter on those teams, but he is definitely close to being so on almost all of them. If a team can keep there best prospect and pick up Niese for a lesser package than a bonafide ace, I don’t see why they wouldn’t be interested.
kingjenrry
Twins, sure. Definitely not on the Giants (Bumgarner, Cain, Heston) or Cubs (Arrieta/Lester/Hammel). The Dbacks and Rangers aren’t contenders.
johnman718
Chris Heston’s and Jason Hammel’s number over the past 2-3 years are pretty close to in line with what Niese’s are. The Rangers and D’Backs are only 4 and 5 games out of a wild card spot with around 80 games left to play. It actually plays into my argument that a team on the fringe of contention may not want to mortgage their future by giving up premium talent in a trade (which is what it would obviously cost to get another teams ace) and going for it this year. By trading for a Niese caliber player they can make a slight upgrade with out making a possibly highly regrettable move. He is also under control for a few more years on a pretty reasonable contract. So, if one of those fringe teams drop out of the wild card race, they will still have a reliable mid rotation piece for next year that didn’t cost them an arm and a leg. This is just my opinion.

Casey Close of Excel Sports has been seeking a bonus more in line with where Allard would’ve been drafted had a back injury not dropped his stock a bit.
Well, I hope he gets a Scherzer like Contract and the Owner of the Braves is like a 156 years old when the Contract finally is paid.
As for Niese, he is a hot pitcher, why not take a gamble and ride the wave for one year. It’s not a bad idea really.

If I was a Philly’s fan, I would be so angry. Every day Amaro is the GM is a day too long.
kingjenrry
At least it’s not Dave Stewart.
tom from st pete florida
Of course he is under no pressure to make a trade.
He was probably told, anyone comes to us with an offer, write down the names, and give them to Andy.
He is now just a puppet GM. He has no real power, and it’s only a matter of time before he is shown the door.
Seriously, if you were the Phillies, would you let this fool make 1 more roster addition/subtraction? I surely would not!
dylanp5030
His last couple trades were fine by me!

I would imagine Phillies fans are painfully, painfully aware how willing Amaro is to hold off on dealing a player.
suddendepth
I wish he would have held off on Pence.

Not another Casey Close Encounter of the Greedy Kind.
User 4245925809
Imagine both sides are happy with the Miley deal. Boston got a rare lefty starter who seems to know how to pitch well at Fenway without an over powering FB and Arizona gets a cost controlled Righty for 4 years, along with another hard throwing righty in Allen Webster who has upside.
link2217
At some point mets are going to have to add offense via trade or free agency. And no Neise, colon, and gee will not bring anything in return that will help. Mets fans don’t want to hear it but one of the top guys will have to go unless they break the bank in free agency on upton or heyward.
johnman718
Their line up is just so bad that adding one star bat will not even help all that much. That young ace pitcher that it will cost is way more valuable to them in my opinion. I think they are better off trying to obtain one or two replacement level players or slightly above replacement level players while not having to give up one of their stud pitchers. Those replacement level players will significantly outproduce current players in the line up.
link2217
Yea but their lineup is currently filled with replacement level players already. If they can sign and trade for an Allstar bat to pair with wright and duda then u have a good lineup to pair with a rotation of atleast 4 of Harvey, wheeler, syndergaard, Matz, degrom.
hojostache
d’Naurd & Wright are both out…and are both above replacement player bats. They need to cut bait with Cuddyer and bring up Conforto and Nimmo in ’16. It isn’t great, but that would fill 2.5 to 3.0 spots in the lineup.
kingjenrry
That’s pretty inaccurate. Basically, they need to replace Cuddyer with a guy who doesn’t hit like a middle infielder. They’re pretty okay everywhere else due to regression (Lagares, Duda) or return from injury (d’Arnaud).
Phillies2017
Ruben is under pressure. The last 2 deadlines he’s done nothing while we’ve been well under .500. Also he probably can’t wait until the offseason due to the fact that his contract expires and it is unlikely he is brought back.
Papelbon, Hamels, Francouer, Revere, HAVE to go
Howard and Chooch if you can get anything
and I wouldn’t be opposed to
Trading relievers (except Giles) or Asche
4ester 2
I’m on the fence with Giles at this point….might be able to get a really good return for him and not sure if he’ll be as effective when this team contends again.
kingjenrry
It’s all about the return. If he can bring someone improving the team long-term, then he should be moved.
metsfanlosingfaith61
Mets can put together a trade for a bat, perhaps taking Niese and Montero (not sure when he is expected to return), or maybe Mejia and Herrara to Cubs for Castro or Baez.
