The Padres are trying to attach the contract of second baseman Jedd Gyorko as they discuss trades for their starting pitchers, tweets Jon Morosi of FOX Sports. Gyorko is owed more than $33MM through 2019, and has hit .214/.282/.336 since 2014. The Padres are known to be discussing trades for controllable starters Tyson Ross and Andrew Cashner.

That would greatly diminish the return on those guys… I think it would be better to hang onto Gyorko and get the greater return.
JD.
Totally agree. Unfortunately you gotta keep him for now.
justinept
You can’t keep these guys… The Padres $100 mil payroll this year is the most in franchise history. They have $65.5 mil locked up between 5 players next year! If you think this year has been tough, wait til next year unless they find a way to shed some salary or pick up some prospects.
stickman0287
Gyorko is not the main problem for our payroll. Don’t get me wrong, $6/$9/$13 million for the next three years isn’t good, but that’s relatively short and freeing up that money won’t get us anything good in FA. So, hold onto him for now and get something good in return for Cash/Ross/Kimbrel/Benoit/whoever, rather than trying to do a salary dump.
justinept
That’s fine if you’re just discussing Gyorko. But between the 5 big contracts, 4 are completely disasters and only Kimbrel has any actual value. It’s insane how badly Preller messed up a franchise in 10 months

We are just discussing Gyorko, that’s what the article was about. If we could package Kemp/BJ Upton with any of those guys, ya, that sounds awesome, I hope they pull the trigger. But as for Gyorko, don’t do it.

Not an expert by any means, but wouldn’t putting a winning team on the field help put buts in the seats and help out with payroll. As a season ticket holder, I look forward to any series we play at home against a .500+ ball club because I know I will be able to sell my seats to fans of the opponent. Dodgers and Giant fans pay the most, and as much as I hate the obnoxiousness of those fans, I love their $$$. But, I would rather see a winning Padre team on the field that can compete with the best in the NL so I would feel compelled to attend those games rather than sell them off.

All scalpers should be taken out and shot..
bigstein09
Good opportunity for the Yankees to add to their stockpile of crappy second basemen.
BucSox
Makes sense on Kimbrell or Ross not the others.

Might be worth a gamble if you had an open slot at 2B–and weren’t paying a big price in talent for the pitcher.
FrankRoo
Could they be enticed/forced to partake in a Castro-Gyorko contract swap?
iowarockeyes
I don’t see Cubs doing that unless there are other parameters around the deal that sends over Cashner or Ross. I think they want to slot Russell at SS and if they can move Castro, they may be planning to slot Baez at 2nd with Russell shifting. Doubt they want to swap an overpaid SS for an overpaid 2nd basemen

Could see the Sox taking his contract to reduce the ask on Ross. Sox just DFA’d Weeks and Nava, so other than Holt, could make some sense for ML infield depth.

Gyorko has looked absolutely lost this season. I don’t understand why SD would want to trade a cost-efficient, controlled stud SP like Ross anyway, but if they do they need to NOT attach Gyorko to the deal. Ross should be worth a serious return alone, with that contract Gyorko lugs around that return is cut in half.

This has Yankees written all over it. He can’t possibly do worse than Drew at 2B and could at the very least form a platoon with him as well as backup Headley. Take a chance that a change of scenery helps him get back to form in the hopes that you can land a Kimbrel or even a Ross/Cashner for the rotation without giving up Severino, Judge, Bird, Sanchez, or Mateo.
bbatardo
Could work if they take on a contract such as Castro’s from the Cubs.. 2 change of scenery swaps amongst a larger trade.
mcfly
Phillies should be on this. The one thing they have, is money. They can afford to take on Gyorko’s contract, if it nets them a prospect… with minimal other return (Dom Brown? or some other low end prospect). Also, Gyorko has great stats in CBP (very sss)… maybe he just needs to get out of Petco, ala Maybin.

This sounds like a deal Friedman would like. Eat Gyorko’s contract and obtain Kimbrel without giving up too much from the farm. The Dodgers are also reportedly still looking for starting pitching. Padres may not be too high on dealing with the Dodgers anymore, though.

Maybe the Braves could throw Chris Johnson in, too. And get nothing in return. Win-win.
