Though many consider this to be a sellers’ market, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports kicks off his latest Trade Buzz column by writing that the starting pitching market could swing in favor of buyers. Only four teams are in desperate need of a rotation upgrade, he notes — the Blue Jays, Royals, Astros and Dodgers — and new names are being added to the pitching market as the deadline nears. Many executives, however, still wonder if the Tigers will really sell. Several throughout the game expect David Price to stay put with the Tigers, Heyman writes. Here are some highlights from his notes on the pitching market as well as the rest of the trade market…
- It’s likely that the Rangers will end up trading Yovani Gallardo, and Heyman points out that an NL team would consider Gallardo a bonus, as he’s hit 13 homers in his career as at the plate. The Rangers could also end up trading Colby Lewis, who could step into the back of a rotation for a club in need of some stable innings.
- The Astros are determined not to trade outfield prospect Brett Phillips, who one Astros-connected person referred to as “an absolute stud” when talking to Heyman. Houston is also interested in virtually every pitcher on the market, though one notable exception is Mike Leake, as the club’s evaluators aren’t particularly high on the Reds right-hander.
- The Angels’ recent offensive surge has calmed their search for a left fielder, but they still have some interest in both Jay Bruce and Ben Revere. There are concerns among decision-makers, however, that Bruce fits the same streaky profile that the departed Josh Hamilton embodied. Carlos Gonzalez isn’t on the Halos’ radar at this time.
- Scouts that spoke to Heyman don’t seem overly concerned with a pair of poor outings for Cole Hamels. Instead, some believe that he may be feeling the rigors of being on the trade block for more than a year. One AL scout said of Hamels’ last start: “He looks fine. It was 100 degrees. He’s playing for a miserable team. And it may be hard to get motivated.” A pair of AL execs opined that the Phillies will be able to get back at least one “huge prospect.”
- The Giants need to bolster their bench, but a reunion with Juan Uribe isn’t likely. Uribe wasn’t amenable to a bench spot the last time he was with San Francisco, and part of the reason he was dealt from Los Angeles to Atlanta was to get more playing time.
- The Blue Jays’ interest in Jonathan Papelbon is “fairly limited” at this point, as the club’s focus at this point is primarily on adding to the rotation.
Matt McCarron 3
Papelbon and 13M for Miguel Castro
Hamels for Appel, Singleton, Santana and Hader
Revere for Trevor Gott and Nate Hyatt
Aaron Harang for D.J Davis
Keep Frenchy and shop Giles.
scissormetimbers
I can say with a 100% certainty that The jays aren’t trading Castro for pappelbon, even with full salary relief and I hope their SP targets are > than harang
Matt Galvin
If it was today their would be lots of Trades. Just needs to be moved to Midnight. Hamels doesn’t want to go to Houston.
Hamels to Cubs Beaz and so on?
Harang to Dodgers for Lee,Hoes?
Papelbon Kennedy to Blue Jays,Castro to Padres,Norris to Phil’s.
Howard to Angels for Cron and others.
Utley/Revere to Royals for Marin,Sterling,Lamb,Brooks and so on.
Matt McCarron 3
Every one of your trades aren’t very good. Mine are questionable, obviously, because everyone has different views, but yours are just strange.
Zach Lee, even as a broken prospect is more valuable than Harang.
Baez isn’t a headliner anymore.
Norris for Papelbon? Lol.
Thats wayyy to much for Utley and Revere. Howard has more value than Utley right now.
thecoffinnail
I think he meant that Toronto trades Bud Norris once they get him from Baltimore for practically free.. Having very little money to spend, AA is going to have to get crafty.. Amaro would probably fall for a “I’ll give you Norris for Papelbon call”
Carlos760
That trade harang to the dodgers for lee lol. Makes no sense harang ain’t good at all, dodgers don’t need anyone to eat innings they want an ace. Dodgers are going after hamels, price, cueto that’s what they want and are going to get.
Matt Galvin
But not giving up Seager to get Hamels. Harang isn’t worth Seager but somebody like Lee. Dodgers need a couple of SP’s.
The Royals need an Upgrade at 2B and OF thst Trade does it.
Howard and Albert can route at 1B/DH.
Giles stays. Ruiz goes to like Twins or Rays.
BoldyMinnesota
Harang isn’t worth Lee, and there is no way Papelbon could ever get Norris back
thecoffinnail
They can do better than Harang for Lee..
haljordan77
He said Harang to the Dodgers for Lee and Hoes which makes even less sense due to the fact that Hoes plays for the Astros.
Bob M.
Until the words come out of Hamels mouth that he doesnt want to goto Houston, I dont buy it. I think he wants his option picked up, which would be the case for every team that is on his no trade list.
slider32
I like Hamels to the Dodgers, Cueto to the Astros, and Price stays put because the Tigers still are only 4 games out of the second wild card.
thecoffinnail
DD isn’t going to risk shutting his window completely on a wild card.. I think his comments on trading them was designed to try to wake Illitch up to reality..
bigdaddyt
jays give up norris and castro for ian kennedy and paps really thats a reallllllllllly bad trade right and would get aa fired sooo fast
therealryan
Not as fast as another .500 season will. After six seasons he can’t get the Jays over the same hump that JP was stuck on.
Bob M.
I think if the Astros want to hold onto Phillips, have the Phillies eat the cash for the option, and not deal the two kids in the rotation now, it will end up being a lot more than the list you just laid out. More than likely 5 playerss. Appel’s value is not enough to headline a deal, espeically if the Rangers are offering Mazara. Tucker, Appel, AJ Reed, Nottingham, Fisher. Santana and Singleton are side pieces and have shown very little at the big league level.
haljordan77
I think the Astros are more likely to trade Vince Velasquez than AJ Reed. McCullers is untouchable but Velasquez isn’t.
Bob M.
personally and I think a lot of teams value Velasquez higher. He is a more complete pitcher. You would have to buy into thinking Mccullers is a starter long term. Keep watching Velasquez, hes mightily impressive.
Bob M.
Also since Reed is strictly a first baseman, he is much more less valuable to a team like the Astros who is bat rich and pitching that is much thinner in the system.
raef715
harang has to get off the DL first; they could have gotten soemthing for him from LA back in May if they had been thinking.
Singleton and Santana back to the Phillies organization? that would sure be a lot of k’s, and of course they would have to dump Howard somehow to put Singleton in there, who might hit even worse while striking out just as much.
Bob M.
Singleton is also signed for 10 million dollars. You have to really believe he can stick in the big leagues, because its not like you can just option him or eventually not offer arbitration. Sure if he pans out, that deal could be a steal. He has looked bad again and looks even worse on defense. Which is hard to do. Hes a DH.

You know, no one has really mentioned it before, but how much value does Appel really have? I mean, I know he’s ranked highly by scouts, but he as a 5+ ERA in the minors for his career. I understand he pitches in an offense heavy PCL, but still, he hasn’t really produced.
Bob M.
Depends on your scouts, I guess. But hes not a top 25 prospect anymore and might not be a top 50. Feliz and Velasquez are higher in the rankings, I would think now. Appel isnt a headliner more than likely for a Hamels type deal. Phillips is who everyone wants and I think the second name is probably Velasquez, followed by AJ Reed and Lance Mccullers.
haljordan77
Feliz and Velasquez weren’t ranked higher than Appel in BP or BA’s mid season rankings. Although, in Velasquez’ case they may have considered him to have graduated.
snazzypants
I’m glad that some scouts feel that Hamels’ value shouldn’t be judged on a few poor outings. Give the man a break. It must be beyond stressful to be playing on a last place team, hearing you’re being looked at by teams from all around the country.
On a side note, as sad as I’ll be to see Hamels go, I’m beyond excited at the same time. As a person who didn’t really become a huge Phillies can until the 2011 season, I’ve never really been able to take it them winning. If they can bet a big return for Cole, the rebuild will actually begin. And if this deadline is like the last two, I might explode.
raef715
hamels feels teams will look at his body of work; so why would he be stressed? he has some control over where he goes, he can go if he wants, and get paid regardless.
thecoffinnail
The way Hamels pitched in the World Series shows that he can handle pressure.. The thought of getting traded probably has little impact on him..
Vandals Took The Handles
For decades I enjoyed the trade deadline. But this year it’s getting to be overkill. Thanks to the Internet, it’s been easy to read rumors since shortly after the season opened (although Hammels seems to have been going from opening day).
Everyone thinks the floodgates will open in the next few weeks. I still feel that due to the obscene long-term contracts given to veterans and subsequently raising salaries via arbitration, that more and more teams are going to be holding onto their controllable players being paid reasonable salaries. Too high a percentage of the long-term high-money contracts are stifling their teams. The younger players with years of control are the value, and I don’t see teams giving up those players easily. So while it may be called a sellers market, it sure appears that the buyers are being selective.
mrshyguy99
Dodgers need to be smart and not over pay for pitching. But we all know dodgers know what to do when it comes to trades. So right now I don’t know if the dodgers will get a top pitcher. But a decent 4th\5th pitcher they might get
Bob M.
I think the Dodgers need to not waste the final year they have with Greinke potentially and try to win the damn World Series. I think Latos and Leake are good fits. The system is top heavy and they dont want to give up De Leon now apparently, so im not sure what they would deal.
slider32
Greinke has set himself up for the mother load.
raef715
if there is any team that can afford to overpay for pitching, wouldnt it be the Dodgers? they have endless resources, go crazy on the international market, and they want to win now.
slider32
Dodgers have as much money as the the US government, they will get Hamels or one of the top three pitchers available.
charles stevens
Gallardo and Colby Lewis to Dodgers for Chris Anderson, Jose De Leon, and Darnell Sweeney.
Carlos760
lol, anything else. Come on man de leon is a top 20 prospect. He’s going to get you something good back. He’ll probably be in the majors next year at the age of 23.
ilikebaseball 2
DeLeon is rated 20, 25 and 89 on BA, Keith Law, and MLB, his numbers have regressed badly at AA and there is no way he is contributing to a ML team next year unless he makes some magical strides in the final 2 months. There is a lot of differing opinions on DeLeon obviously not everyone is as high on him as BA is, but to think he could headline a deal for a top of the line starter is a bit of a reach.
Bob M.
An analytics driven front office is smart enough to know Gallardo and Lewis are terrible.
User 4245925809
Teams are just as well off talking Kevin Millwood out of retirement at the age of 40+, or maybe even Jamie Moyer at 50+ as those 2.
No special talented front office is required to avoid them.
pcwizblue
Why would Harang be on any teams, radar?
Melvin McMurf
Angels have a 6 man rotation right now and the 2nd best starting ERA in the AL. They don’t need an upgrade
slider32
Angels seem to be looking for power bat like Bruce.
BlueSkyLA
Dunno about anyone else, but I don’t like the theory that the Dodgers traded Uribe to the Braves with the condition that he be given more playing time.
