Marlins right-hander Henderson Alvarez experienced a setback in his rehab from right shoulder inflammation, and his season is now in jeopardy, writes Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald. Manager Dan Jennings told Spencer and others prior to Thursday’s contest: “He had a recurrence of the shoulder. We’re trying to determine if it’s going to be best for a non-surgical, or surgical procedure regarding the shoulder.” Alvarez’s injury troubles in 2015 have contributed to the team’s disappointing season. If he’s to undergo surgery and miss the remainder of the season, Alvarez will have made just four starts in 2015, with the end result being an ERA over 6.00.
Here’s the latest from the NL East…
- The Dodgers, Cardinals, Twins and Blue Jays are still in the mix for former Marlins closer Steve Cishek, reports MLB.com’s Joe Frisaro. Cishek’s been throwing well since returning from a brief stint at Triple-A, allowing just one earned run with an 11-to-4 K/BB ratio in 11 2/3 innings. Frisaro also adds the Orioles to the list of teams with interest in right-hander Dan Haren, adding to recent reports that have linked the Blue Jays and Dodgers to Haren.
- Mets general manager Sandy Alderson made a pair of definitive statements to reporters today, writes MLB.com’s Joe Trezza. First and foremost, Alderson said that none of the four young arms in his rotation — Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard or Steven Matz — is available in trades. Alderson also insisted that ownership has provided him with the resources to take on a major contract, though he added that the media and fans alike would both take that news with a heavy grain of salt: “Now, none of you will believe me, OK? So I’m not sure why you asked the question and insisted on the answer.”
- The Mets have interest in Padres outfielder Will Venable, per Jon Morosi of FOX Sports (Twitter link), who echoes previous reports that Gerardo Parra is under Mets consideration as well. According to Morosi, the Cubs are intrigued by both Parra and Venable as well, however, so the Mets have some competition in regards to those two trade targets.
- Morosi’s colleague, Ken Rosenthal, tweets that the Mets don’t feel they need to acquire a third baseman while David Wright is on the shelf, because the team is better defensively with Daniel Murphy at third base while Wright is out. Adding an outfielder — preferably one controllable beyond 2015 — is the Mets’ priority.
- Speaking about the trade deadline in an appearance on MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM (Twitter links), Nationals GM Mike Rizzo said, “There’s no trade I could make that could be as the guys we’re getting back [from the DL]. We will certainly be looking, but I don’t know how active we’ll be.”
ShadowChronicler
I wouldn’t sell 2. I’d sell high on Harvey but only for controllable all-star potential or a huge prospect package.
scann
They should trade syndergaard for young all-star outfielder……And Matz for young all-star infielder……..or vice versa…………
ShadowChronicler
I could see that. But I think they can get both for just Harvey and a throw in. Plus they could deal Niese as well to get help while Wright is down.
theo2016
Harveys value isnt that high.
ShadowChronicler
Probably not. But overpaying for quality is not uncommon.
hojostache
He is in his first year back post-TJS and is doing better than statistically predicted for comparable arms. He is going to have a monster ’16…which will be scary with deGrom, Syn, and Matz also in the mix.
sergelang
The only infielder you would trade Matz or Syndergaard for is Goldschmidt.
hojostache
*IF*…and that is a big if..they traded an arm, it should be Harvey. He is a Boras client destined to look for a huge deal/be a Yankee. That said, the much more realistic option is that they hang on to everyone and keep Verrett/Montero as the #5 until Wheeler is back in June/July 2016.
They are down 2 of their 3 best hitters (and had Murphy out for quite awhile too), so their offense could be below average with them back…hopefully. If Conforto can be replacement level for Cadaver, then even average production makes them scary in ’16 because of their beastly rotation and solid bullpen.
woolcorp
Would the Dodgers really have to give up a player for Haren? Or just ask nicely.
BlueSkyLA
So long as they don’t ask for their money back too.
Lance
getting Haren back makes a whole lot more sense for LA than giving up Puig for Price and/or Cepedes.
BlueSkyLA
I don’t see them giving up Puig for anyone. Too many leftie bats in the order already. In any case Haren doesn’t solve the Dodgers’ biggest problem.
mattclementsgoattee
Jorge Soler and Baez for Syndergaard and Granderson.
ShadowChronicler
I’d pick Castro over Baez. Baez strikes out too much.
mjmoran85
Castro also strikes out too much and the Wilpons can’t afford him.
neverender82
Castro is one of the worst players in MLB this year.
rct
Castro has negative value. Soler and Castro for Syndergaard and Granderson would be enough for Alderson, or any GM, to get fired.
Castro isn’t going anywhere. He’s at his lowest value. The Cubs would need to pay half his salary just to get a mid-value prospect in return. Their best bet is to hold on to him and hope that he rebuilds value.
willi
Both are Bums !
hojostache
Castro is hovering around .600 OPS+ last time I checked. Flores is doing better than him, ouch. Baez is a guy the Mets should target, but for Niese+…NOT a premium arm. Baez is having a down year and his strikeout numbers are scary bad.
mjmoran85
That doesn’t help the Mets at all. Granderson is their best hitter this year. Soler doesn’t appear ready to help, the Mets would likely get similar production from Conforto, and Baez is basically Flores in the field at SS.
willi
God help the Mets , if their Best Hitter is Granderson.
neverender82
Sandy is on record saying that none of Harvey, deGrom, Thor, or Matz are available.
rct
Sorry, but this trade makes no sense. Syndergaard, as the article above says, is off-limits. Granderson has been the Mets best hitter.
Baez isn’t even in the majors and Soler has hit worse than Cuddyer this year. This trade makes the Mets markedly worse this season and potentially worse in 2016 and 2017.
willi
Nobody, wants Granderson !
hojostache
Surprisingly, his numbers support his current contract. He still BLOWS against lefties and has a noodle arm, but he is producing enough to be okay. Sadly, he is the best hitter right now on the Mets, instead of being a contributor or #6/#7 hole guy.
mjmoran85
Having 4 starters is the only reason they’ve won as many games as they have.
willi
Playing the Hapless Phillies , The depleted Marlins, and the Unachieveing Nat’s is and the rebuiling Braves , the Only reason Mets have won games.
hojostache
Yes, they have crushed the Phillies 8-1 in the season series. However, the rest is incorrect:
MIA: 6-4, WAS: 4-6. ATL: 6-6. The Mets took ARI: 5-2, CIN: 3-0 to the woodshed, but are a pathetic 0-7 v. the Cubbies.
bostonarmy
Hmm… Boston might have a couple interesting outfield options for the Mets. Possibly even Hanley if they want to take on that stupid contract.
neverender82
I don’t think there’s even a one in a million chance that happens.
willi
Mets are desperate !
scann
Matz for Hanley works……
hojostache
In what world does that makes sense? Even RedSox Nation would admit that is as likely as Donald Trump heading up PETA.
Gautham Pawnday
Which outfielders that are controllable through 2015 are available? I am guessing that he needs to play CF due to the uncertainty of Lagares. I just know of Gomez, and maybe Revere. Are there any others?
bostonarmy
Gautham, I’m really not forcing the idea of Boston pairing with the Mets but a guy who is an extraordinary defensive player, possible gold glove caliber in Jackie Bradley Jr. would prevent a significant amount of runs scored at Citi Field.
Also, he’s going insane down in AAA Pawtucket, hitting over .300.
thecoffinnail
I think it is fair to say JBJ is gold glove worthy.. Just watching him in the field last year I think it is safe to say that he could very easily be close to Heyward’s ability on defense.. His range is unbelievable.. The only question with JBJ is his bat.. Many players tear it up in AAA and can’t hit a lick in MLB.. The difference in pitching is huge..
I would also throw in Gomez and Parra as being controllable and available.. Gomez is going to be one of the more expensive gets this trading deadline because he is controllable.. He is solid both defensively and with his bat.. He would definitely upgrade any team he lands with.. I would think they could get him for Wheeler though.. The Brewers won’t be competing for a few years and they could take their time bringing Wheeler back..
Matt Galvin
Venable? Castillo? Carlos Gomzalez? Fuld? Bourn? David Murphy? Swisher? Blackmon? Nava? Victorino? Craig? Prado? Morse?
.
Lance
some players take longer to adjust to MLB pitching. Nelson Cruz is a good example. Bradley could be another. No reason for the BoSox to give up on him just yet—especially with so many on the Sox who will probably be leaving this off season.
willi
Great Glove ,But the Guy is a No Hitter every time he steps in the Batters box.
willi
Bennie the Jet Revere would hit alot of Threebaggers in Citi Field ! ( For A Price )
hojostache
Revere and Gomez are the two most likely. I think Revere is where the Mets go (if they make a move for OF). He is controllable, not super expensive, has some speed, and isn’t going to cost the farm. Gomez isn’t a huge upgrade considering his expected cost. I know…I know…but 1.5 yr of Gomez isn’t worth 4-5+ yrs from various prospects.
Gautham Pawnday
Oops I meant CF’ers who were controllable beyond 2015. I think most of you knew what I meant though.
thecoffinnail
I wonder if Alderson omitted Wheeler from that group because he thinks with him being injured no one would take him or if that means he is available.. I am sure there are several teams that would still be all over Wheeler..
rct
That’s probably the case. He’s out with TJ and won’t pitch until mid-2016. There might be several teams interested in Wheeler, but there’s no way you’d get anything of value in return. He’s untradeable.
bobbleheadguru
So you are telling me that if the Tigers offer JD Martinez and Price for one of those four and take on Grandersons contract, the Mets will not take it?
Out of place Met fan
Granderson is playing to the value of the contract, and Price walk at the end of the year. Doesn’t equate to a net positive for the Mets
hojostache
lolz…heck no! Rental, gimpy Martinez, and a backloaded and most likely opting out if he is decent Price? Granderson’s contract is okay for his production. Cadaver’s contract…that is worse, but thankfully for only 1 more yr.
willi
Mets are only one more Arm Injury away from being irrelevant for another decade, They have already lost Wheeler and Harvey , it’s just a matter of time one of the others ones have a serious Arm Injury and become less valuable, Start thinking of the Florida Marlins for inspiration on arm Injuries to Young , delicate arms.Getting a Big ,Young Bat like Goldschmidt would be worth an upcoming arm injury pitcher like Degrom.
hojostache
Goldschmidt for Harvey + a couple prospects…absolutely. Not deGrom though. He is older, but he has been the best pitcher statistically for the past year…July to July. They have shown the stats and he has been better than Kershaw, which is nuts.
