The Giants have designated reliever Jean Machi for assignment, Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News reports on Twitter. His roster spot was needed for the activation of starter Tim Hudson.
Machi, 33, was a late bloomer who provided San Francisco with a bunch of good innings over the last two seasons. Combined, he tossed 119 1/3 frames of 2.49 ERA ball with 7.7 K/9 against 2.3 BB/9.
Things have been different thus far in 2015, however. Machi has allowed 5.14 earned runs per nine over 35 innings, with 5.7 K/9 and 3.6 BB/9. His fastball velocity remains steady in the 92 to 93 mph range, however, so there’s good reason to think he’ll see another chance at the big leagues this season.

Giants still have Affeldt, Lincecum, and Aoki to return soon… it’ll be tough to decide who stays and who goes.
Sadly, Josh Osich is almost certainly getting sent back down…
gilgunderson
Osich has been a great surprise. A tough lefty who can also get righties out. A readymade replacement for Affeldt next season — or sooner, if Affeldt can’t rebound.

Somebody’s bound to claim him. He was too good over the past two years to not be given a second chance, despite his sub-par performance this year.
Glenn O'Brien
Hope someone else does, glad he’s been DFA’d. This coming from a die hard Giants fan.

As a big Phillies fan, I share your opinion. I always want relievers of my team to do well somewhere else. (Here’s looking at you, Mad Dog)

Ditto. He was very, very good through the end of last season. Unfortunately his control has deserted him in the postseason and it hasn’t come back. He’s falling behind in counts and can’t throw the splitter. It’s a shame, but at least Kontos has stepped up in his place.

He will get another shot at the big leagues this season. Plenty of teams need bullpen help and he will be for almost free. Now the roster crunch comes down hard, who goes next? Strickland? Osich? Romo? Petit? The way I see it, at least three of those guys are gone once Aoki, Lincecum, and Affeldt come back because Maxwell has been so good this season. Sadly I predict that Strick/Osich go back to AAA and return in September and possibly earlier if there are more injuries, and that Petit is DFA’d so that Lincecum takes his spot as the second possible spot starter in the bullpen with Vogey.
Glenn O'Brien
See here’s the thing, Lincecum won’t return soon, if and once Aoki returns off the DL possibly next week, Osich is going back to AAA.

Maxwell will likely be DFA’d. No need for 3 backup outfielders.

Who is the third backup outfielder … Blanco … Maxwell … ???
sfgfan24
Who is the third backup outfielder? Last time I checked, Blanco and Maxwell made two backup outfielders, with Aoki, Pagan, and Pence starting. It’s OK though, math is hard.
gilgunderson
I wish Blanco would get more starts in CF. He’s having a great season. Pagan, not so much.
gmenfan
Having three backup outfielders would mean there’s six on your roster. Pagan, Maxwell, Pence, Blanco and Aoki would be five. DFA Maxwell and you have four. Maybe your math is different.

Lincecum will not throw another pitch for the Giants until the rosters expand in September. Even then, he may only get a courtesy home “curtain call” during the final homestand. This new “degenerative hip disorder” ailment is a nice way of hiding him on the DL to avoid DFAing a fan favorite and Cy Young Award winner.
