The Orioles and Brewers are in trade discussions regarding outfielder Gerardo Parra, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.
The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel’s Tom Haudricourt tweeted recently that Milwaukee GM Doug Melvin said his trade of Carlos Gomez wouldn’t preclude a trade of Parra, adding that the Orioles have interest. MLB.com’s Britt Ghiroli tweets that the Orioles “like Parra a lot.” Lookout Landing’s Nathan Bishop, who earlier pegged the Brewers’ return for Gomez and Mike Fiers, tweets that right-hander Zach Davies could be in play.
The Orioles aren’t alone in their pursuit of Parra as the Angels and Mets have also been linked to him recently. Parra, 28, has hit .326/.367/.517 with nine homers in 347 plate appearances this season. His .884 OPS so far this year beats his previous watermark – a .784 OPS with the D’Backs in 2011 – by a healthy margin. For his career, Parra owns a .279/.330/.407 batting line across seven big league seasons.
While he’s doing well at the plate, his usually solid defense has taken a step back this season. Parra owns a -20.5 UZR/150, which casts him as a pretty bad outfielder defensively. In 2014 Parra graded out as roughly average and in other seasons he has been strong in the field, per the advanced metrics.

Do not trade Davies for 2 months of Parra.
The_Porcupine
Ah, the O’s woke up to find their main competition have all made moves to help them to the post season. Parra doesn’t impress me, especially since his defense has reportedly slipped this year. Would he be that big of an upgrade over Lough?
Dave 41
Have you watched this guy hit over the last two months? He’s been really impressive and has a great throwing arm to boot.
Lefty_Orioles_Fan
Well Parra plays regularly unlike Lough.
However, this is a waste of time.
The_Porcupine
With the injuries the Brewers had in the outfield, he had to play regularly. This is his career year and the O’s will have to overpay. However, I would rather get him than Revere. Maybe the O’s can pick up to part time OF bats to platoon . I think it’s a moot point regardless as the O’s biggest need is pitching. Every year their need is in the rotation. And has the O’s figured out yet why they can’t develop any pitching of their own?
mikeyst13
His defensive metrics have slipped a little but, but that’s more due to the extended time he’s spent in center. While he can play there he’s much more comfortable in a corner spot and with Jones in Balt he obviously wouldn’t have to man CF often.
flyerzfan12
C’mon Orioles, you can have Ben Revere for 2.5 years for the same price
mrtplush
The fact Davies is the Orioles #3 prospect is really scary.
UnderRatedFlaherty
Don’t understand why they would trade for Parra when they can have Revere for 3x as long without paying too much money and you’ll get the same/better production at times and he is more proven.
mikeyst13
Philly isn’t as motivated to sell Revere so he would probably cost more and it’s not like Balt has the deepest farm system to delve into with all the injuries.
willblank1
We have enough out fielders get some pitching
Dave 41
Rosenthal is saying Davies may not be enough for Parra. Perhaps Davies and 1B Trey Mancini? Brewers need some 1B prospects
richardnixon
That’s absurd. Davies is a massive overpay for 2 months of Parra.
john52
no ,Mancini is the O’s 1B in 2 year !
Lefty_Orioles_Fan
This nonsense.
What kind of meaningful difference would Parra make?

The O’s are talking to both MIL and Philly, so trading for Parra would likely mean the price for Revere is much higher. I have no issue trading Zach Davies now as a minor league all-star. He projects as a back of the rotation starter. Orioles are always willing to sign a FA for that role.
duckhntr
You guys are crazy, look at the splits with parra and revere over the last few months, parra is one of the hottest players in mlb right now. Hes a two time gold glover who just saved a game for milwaukee 2 nights ago.
mikeyst13
If they can get Davies I’d take it in a second. Reminds me a lot of Fiers. Not overpowering stuff yet he produces and has great control. Probably maxes out as a back of the rotation starter, but add him to the mix with Jungmann, Peralta, Nelson, and some combination of Hader/Williams/Lopez they could have a pretty decent rotation in a couple years.

no no no !

Parra is the prototypical player in the middle of a hot streak at the deadline that is going to end up bringing back WAY more than his true value. If any team is offering a good prospect for him and you are the Brewers, you take it an run.
Sage
I mean, I almost agree with you, as he’s going to bring back more than his true value. But, can you really call it a “hot streak” at this point? Dude hasn’t just been hot-hitting for a couple weeks, he’s been on fire for months now. His overall line on the season is .326/.367/.517 with a 140 wRC+ in 347 plate appearances. You don’t have a line like that from a hot streak, you get it from being genuinely good.
Grumpkins
Yes, you really can call Parra’s 2015 numbers a “hot streak.” Here’s why I think so:
Coming into 2015, his career slash line was .274/.326/.395 for an OPS of .721 and an OPS+ of 94. Entering June this year, he was pretty close to his career norms, posting a .275/.302/.435 line (.737 OPS) for the season. A solid June saw those numbers tick up just a bit to .290/.320/.445 (.766 OPS).
But in July, he’s found a new gear, and his slash is a ridiculous .435/.495/.718 (1.212 OPS)—which is awesome. It’s also very likely unsustainable.
Track record should be a huge factor in determining the trade-deadline value of a solid-but-not-spectacular player like Parra. He’s having a career year, bolstered by a month-long hot streak. If he can produce even at his May and June rates, he’d be a nice upgrade for the Orioles and the poor corner-outfield production they’ve gotten this year from Snider/Reimold/Lough/Young/De Aza/etc. (and I like his arm in RF or LF, from what I’ve seen of it). But I think it would be a mistake to overpay from a thin farm system for a guy who has just performed, in a four-week stretch, well above his career norms, and it would be downright idiotic for any GM to expect him to repeat his July.
