The Marlins will be without All-Star second baseman Dee Gordon for at least two weeks, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Gordon dislocated his thumb sliding headfirst into first base. There was no ligament damage or broken bones per Rosenthal. Gordon will be replaced on the All-Star roster by Troy Tulowitzki. Fellow Rockie DJ LeMahieu will now start for the NL All Stars.
Here’s more from the East divisions:
- Miami is weighing trades ahead of the deadline, writes Joe Frisaro of MLB.com. The club is 10.5 games back in the NL East and 14 games below .500. They will probably have to get hot in the next couple weeks to change the current plan. As MLBTR readers are well aware, pending free agents Mat Latos and Dan Haren are trade candidates. The Marlins have also received interest in former closer Steve Cishek and swing man Brad Hand.
- The Orioles could be primed for a quiet trade deadline, writes Peter Schmuck of the Baltimore Sun. The club already has a host of impending free agents. It could be ill-advised to deal controllable assets like they did last season. Dan Duquette dealt Eduardo Rodriguez for Andrew Miller, a trade he may now regret given Rodriguez’s success in Boston. Additionally, top prospects Dylan Bundy and Hunter Harvey are sidelined with injuries. Mike Wright showed some promise but ultimately struggled in two stints with the club.
- It’s imperative that the Phillies trade Cole Hamels before the end of the month, opines Jake Kaplan of the Philadelphia Inquirer. While the club could find it easier to swap Jonathan Papelbon or Ryan Howard over the offseason, a robust group of free agent starters will hurt Hamels’ value in the winter. In my opinion, it would be quite shocking if the Phillies held Hamels for the rest of the season. If they did fail to find a deal to their liking, they could position Hamels as a cost effective alternative to aces like Johnny Cueto and David Price.
- Phillies GM Ruben Amaro is excited about the state of the farm system, writes Todd Zolecki of MLB.com. “I would put our farm system up against anybody’s,” said Amaro. He specifically mentioned Aaron Nola and Aaron Altherr, both of whom are finding success at the Triple-A level. It’s widely assumed that Nola will soon join the club. Trades could also open the door for Altherr. Nola is not on the 40-man roster, but Altherr already has a spot.
- The Yankees and Mets should consider adding Athletics closer Tyler Clippard, suggests Andy Martino of the New York Daily News. Even though neither club technically needs relief help, Martino references the Royals dominant trio of relievers from last October. Their ability to shorten the game is critical in October. Particularly with the Yankees, a trio of Clippard, Dellin Betances, and Miller would be intimidating.

Phillies farm is much improved, but that comment is a little silly. I mean teams like Dodgers and Rangers have just so much depth and talent, among many other teams.
I think if they do trade Hamels and get the overall number 1 pick, you could be looking at a top 5-10 farm system, but it’s not quite there yet.
charles stevens
Amaro is clueless.
sigurd 2
A more apt word might be delusional; but yes he is indeed clueless.
thecoffinnail
Maybe with 2-3 years of number 1 picks the Phillies could have a top 10 farm system.. The Phillies neglected their farm for far too long to think they will have a quick turnaround with it.. Look at the Yankees.. They have been emphasizing building the farm for 4 years now and have their own Nola (Severino) a much better OF prospect than Altherr (Judge), plus several highly touted players (Mateo, Bird, Sanchez etc.) throughout the levels and they are only considered to have a middle of the pack farm system.. Amaro must be drunk texting again.. Especially, when he says he would put it up against anybody’s.. As Dylan stated, the Rangers, Dodgers, and Cubs, clearly have superior farms.. Heck I think the Astros 2015 draft alone is better than the entire Phillies farm system..
I really hope Detroit is paying attention to the state of the Phillies farm.. This is their future if they don’t correct things soon..
kingjenrry
That’s not as close to the truth as I would like. With Nola, Franco, and Crawford already at or near the big league level, they’re improving through internal reinforcements more quickly than I would like as a Mets fan. If they move Hamels and Papelbon for the right pieces, they could compete as soon as 2017.
bruinsfan94 2
They don’t really have the depth though. They really have to make some trades soon or this could be a long rebuild.
Donnie B
They should be aggressive in the FA market as well. They can get a power Bat in the OF (Upton or Cespedes – maybe even Heyward) – and a couple starters – the 2017 FA class is even better and younger, and that’s when all of Philly’s large contracts are gone.
The rebuild via trades and FA should be quicker than most teams,
The Phillies have the money to make it a short rebuild.
The key to what the Phillies will do won’t come til after they decide to keep or trade Hamels… then if they do trade him, the return will dictate the FA needs.
It should be interesting at least…
stymeedone
Detroit has an aging owner, which is why they are concentrating on the Major League team. Along with using the prospects in trades, their 10 years of contending have given them few high picks. (not that that is an excuse for being at the bottom, but it gives them reason to not be at the top of farm systems.) Still, McCann at C is 25. Iglesias at SS is 25. Gose in CF is 24. Castellanos at 3B is 23. JD Martinez is 28. The Tigers have already turned the roster over during their years of contention, moving to younger players. The older players, Miggy and Victor, haven’t exactly lost effectiveness (though injuries have been a factor). I just don’t understand the Philly comparison. The only comparison is that both teams have weak farm systems.
Philliesfan4life
I don’t see the tigers making the playoffs this year, they are going to lose out on david price because he will be looking to get a scherzer type deal. imo their window has closed
Donnie B
I agree that the Tigers will miss this year’s playoffs and should be sellers because they will have so many free agents leaving, they can start the re-tooling now… By Trading Price, Cespedes, Simon, Soria, Avila and Raja Davis, they can get quality returns and then get the missing pieces thru FA in the off-season.
donniebaseball
I question how much you can truly get for guys with half a year of control remaining. Especially with price getting a qualifying offer. It’s not like you’re going to going to get a kris Bryant in return

Latos and Cishek for Guerrero, C prospect, and Chris Reed.
Dodgers cover every salary while throwing a contract stipulation where Guerrero waives opting out.
Marlins get money, a marketable Cuban for money, and ‘first round pick’ Chris to say it was not a total money deal though it was.
It would be a trade Loria could never refuse.
livefastcyyoung 2
And where does Guerrero play in Miami? 2nd base is covered by Gordon. Outfield is set for the next several years. Banking on them starting him at third with those whopping 9 games under his belt?
miggypop44
Depending on how much they believe in his bat, I could see them trying him at 1b, even with Morse back. I think they’d want more for Latos and Cishek though
Brixton
I would imagine they would too. Why sell low on Cishek, and Latos could improve his ERA in 2-3 more starts before the deadline. His FIP has been pretty good, suggesting he could improve.
stymeedone
They sell low on Cishek because he is a non-tender candidate, and there is not enough time before the deadline to re-establish his value. Selling low is better than nothing.
kingjenrry
That sounds reasonable. The Marlins have been awful at 1B in recent memory.
gamemusic3 2
Third is his best position but honestly it would be about the money.
The Dodgers have got impressive returns through 3 trades with the Marlins thanks to the greed of Loria and paying contracts.
Cishek has a good peripheral record with a bad contract and should be a great opportunity.
thecoffinnail
Guerrero will never agree to waive his opt out in going to Miami.. The only way I can see him doing it is to go to a team like the Cubs, Cards, Yankees, or Angels.. Someplace where he is going to be on a contender.. As CyYoung stated where would he play in Miami? Prado will be back shortly so 3rd is off the table.. 2nd is covered.. OF is covered.. 1st would be an option but I don’t see Guerrero as having the bat for 1st long term..
kingjenrry
Not so sure. As a Cuban with the embargo lifting in 8 days, Cuba makes a lot of sense for him. In terms of cities, I’d much rather live in Miami than Chicago as a multimillionaire, for sure.
stymeedone
Prado, and Morse are both trade candidates. Guerrero would find a place to play.
jr428
Ok, kinda new at getting this stuff, but based off of Steve Cishek’s FIP, he should be pitching better. Bad luck? Or?
bradthebluefish
In short, yes. Cishek has good Fielding Independent Pitching, meaning that when you exclude the fielders then this is what you can expect his ERA to be.
Cishek has been backed by poor defense, or at least when he’s been pitching, and thus it is presumed his ERA should be better than it actually is.
User 4245925809
Velocity in a freefall last cpl of years. Burned out IMO. Miami does this to main relievers. I wrote this couple days back. They did the same thing to Ryan Webb and Mike Dunn. Won’t address the BP in the offseason and fill it in with cheapest available pieces, then they all fail, so same people have to go out there game after game. We see the same happen at Detroit
theo2016
Change of scenery candidate for sure.
willi
Ruben been deceiving himself so long that he now believes his own lies, But he just the Tip of the iceberg in Phillies Management, Majority Owner and Current President are also been in mode of denial the past few years .
Brixton
Franco, Crawford, Nola, Randolph, Morgan, Biddle, Altherr, Eflin, Kleven, Windle, Quinn, Knapp, Encarnicon, Dugan and Ben Lively I would call the cream of the crop of the Phillies farm. A few top 100 prospects in Nola and Crawford, hopefully a few future guys as well. Certainly a good farm system, but a top one? Not a chance.
We don’t stack up to the Rangers, Twins, Red Sox, Cubs, Astros and a decent amount of other teams.
dylanp5030
How do you not mention Kilome? He’s probably their 3rd best prospect right now and a borderline top 50 guy (according to BP).
kingjenrry
It’s not a top system on paper. On the flipside, anytime a team can bring up a quality 3B (Franco), SS (Crawford), and mid-rotation starter (Nola) in rapid succession, it’s a great start. They’ve got a ton of arms to improve their pitching situation and have the money to spend in free agency, too. With Gillick calling the shots, their situation isn’t nearly as dire as it was before. The teams I would worry about now are the Rockies and the Diamondbacks – two teams with even worse front offices.
Overbrook
Red Sox? Come on. Rangers are always rated highly. We’ll see if they finally produce. Astros, Cubs, twins have had a lot of promotions.
Draven Moss
The a Red Sox had a top 5 farm system going into the year, and it was ranked #2 by one scouting organization after landing Moncada. Their farm system may be hurt a tad after E-Rod and Swihart graduating, but they still have a lot of depth and kids in the lower minors with great potential. Their farm system is still a lot better than the Phillies.
Donnie B
Quinn is also a top 100 prospect and will likely be the Phillies CF on opening day of 2016, Crawford at SS and of course, Franco at 3B. Nola in the Rotation, perhaps even Eflin and Biddle or Lively. 2 Starters come via FA and the other 3 from the farm.
kingjenrry
Quinn could be up in 2016 but the Phils would be making a mistake if they have him in the Opening Day lineup. If they wait another couple of weeks, they’ll have him under contract for another season.
gomerhodge71
What is the current status/timetable with Bundy and Harvey?
thecoffinnail
Pretty sure I saw a few days ago that Bundy has had a serious set back and his season might be over..
kingjenrry
Orioles’ pitcher development is atrocious.
nrd1138
If they really want to stop players from getting hurt sliding headfirst to first base they would make it against the rules. Sliding into first is just dumb
stymeedone
you can’t fix stupid.
Overbrook
Farm systems can turn around in a hurry. A couple of drafts blossom, a couple of high ranked teams trade/move-up their prospects, and there’s a shift. Plenty of unranked prospects produce in the majors. Not hard to believe that Philly might be getting better quickly.
chicothekid
Let me get this straight. The Mets are already overloaded with quality bullpen, just sent down a guy to the minors who was doing really well because they had no roster spot for him, and they still have another guy on the DL too. With all that in mind, they should trade for MORE bullpen help?
Who is this guy?
stymeedone
Detroit will happily take the Mets bullpen scraps.
hojostache
I really like the Mets BP…but Clippard would have a place if they could get him for something fair, but I don’t expect that from the A’s.
kingjenrry
Not at all. Clippard would have among the worst numbers in the Mets pen, even before considering the guys due back soon.
