2:48pm: Drellich tweets that the Astros are out on Kimbrel as well.
2:25pm: There have been “zero talks” between the Yankees and Kimbrels in the run-up to the deadline, Sherman tweets.
2:17pm: Rosenthal tweets that there’s no traction between the Yankees and Padres in Kimbrel talks.
12:54pm: Joel Sherman of the New York Post tweets that the Yankees believe the Padres to be discussing a larger deal with other teams that involves Kimbrel.
11:39am: Both Rosenthal and Olney (Twitter links) now say there haven’t been any discussions between the Yankees and Padres regarding Kimbrel recently. Olney says there have been none “so far in this work day,” which could suggest that talks have stalled since their overnight discussions.
Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune tweets that multiple teams say GM A.J. Preller has consistently asked for “a ton” in return for Kimbrel.
11:24am: The Yankees are currently the team that is in the hottest pursuit of Kimbrel, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (Twitter link).
7:48am: The Yankees and Padres spent much of the night working on a trade to send closer Craig Kimbrel from San Diego to New York, according to Jayson Stark of ESPN.com. The Astros, too, are in the mix for Kimbrel. Stark’s colleague, Buster Olney, tweets that he’s hearing the Yankees connected to Kimbrel as well.
Reports last night indicated that the Yankees would be willing to take on all of the $28MM that Kimbrel is guaranteed through the 2017 season. Stark hears the same but adds that the Yankees are continuing to balk at the possibility of including top prospects Luis Severino, Greg Bird and Aaron Judge in a potential swap. CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman tweets that the Padres have sought top shortstop prospect Jorge Mateo as well but been denied to this point.
Late last night, Yahoo’s Jeff Passan reported that the Padres and Astros were at least discussing something big that involved Kimbrel and possibly one of Tyson Ross or Andrew Cashner. Stark adds today that it’s not known how much of Kimbrel’s contract the Astros would be able to take on after absorbing the $12MM remaining on Carlos Gomez’s deal yesterday.

Cashman make a move!! But don’t give up Judge or Severino. I say move Bird or the Mateo. But we need one of their starters also.
Ken M.
Refs for Kimbrel!
bruinsfan94 2
Doesnt even get the pads on the phone.
jkunkle
As a Braves fan…..I really hope Kimbrel stays in the west somehow.
RunDMC
As a Braves fan in NY, bring him to the Big Apple. NY media would love him and he’d be reunited with McCann, while taking over for Mo. That bullpen would be absolutely incredible.
jkunkle
The Yanks would be the 2nd worst team to see him pitch on. 1st being the Nationals. Kimbrel would probably be very unhappy in NY as it is not his style at all
MB923
@sloth , Pads won’t do that. Stop making ridiculous offers like how yesterday you said Yankees could have got Hamels for Ref and Sanchez.
Gambit1193
Little hope this gets done for the Yanks, especially with the Astros and now the Sox in this convo
MB923
Yankees have DiDi under control the next few years (for those who don’t know, he’s hit the ball Much better since May/June). Also drafted Kyle Holder (I’m aware, he is probably several years away). Mateo is expandable if you ask me.
Just read Boston is in on Kimbrel, Ross and Carraaco.
rivera42
Don’t hold your breath on Holder. Tremendous defense but he can’t hit to save his life. A wasted pick, IMO.
smokaveli
Sloth Broth you are moron
Ken M.
Than off?

Refsnyder is getting you anyone of value alone. Refsnyder is not a headliner, nor is Sanchez who they don’t need. Stop saying these guys get it done when they dont. If San Diego is trading Kimbrel to the Yankees (Especially if Ross is involved). Your starting with Severino, Judge, Mateo or Bird.
justinept
That last statement is true ONLY if Ross is involved…
adyo4552
It’s going to take some serious return to get Kimbrel, hoping the Yankees wildly overpay just to turn an A- bullpen into an A+ one.
justinept
The Yankees have refused to offer any of their top-5 prospects. One of those prospects is a .275 hitter in A-Ball… Basically, the Yankees have offered to merely take on Kimbrel’s salary. That’s it. At this point in the game, given how determined they’ve been not to give up any prospects of actual value, I’d say that the chance of a Yankees overpay is slim. Could be wrong, though –
vmmercan 2
Come on, don’t be so ridiculous about Mateo. He also has 70 stolen bases in 91 games through yesterday. It’s like saying Jacoby Ellsbury in his prime doesn’t hit for enough power or bats over .300. Not to mention he’s 20 and a middle infielder.

This is a bad team that is about to lose its best player to FA (Upton). They’re playing with a franchise-record $100 mil payroll and have $65.5 million committed to Shields Upton Jr, Kimbrel, Kemp and Gyorko next year. That doesn’t take into account the upcoming salary bump for a guy like Ross… So with very little wiggle room to improve through FA, and ZERO prospects in their farm system… how exactly do the Padres plan to contend at any point in the next 5 years?
max l
Benoit, Veneble, Kennedy walk next year, Shields will easily clear waivers so could still unload him in August (I’m looking at you Yankees). They’ll extend the QO offer to Upton; if he accepts it, they’ll have him for about $16.5 million, if not they get the comp pick. In any case, they’ll have pretty much the same roster as Tyson Ross (17), Cashner (16), & Kimbrel (18) are all controllable for at least 1 more season. At the worst, Preller can dangle them again during the winter when he was more time, and more teams to play with.
Unlike Dombrowski with Cespedes (he really was getting nothing back if he walked), Preller didn’t have to do anything.
Montu Masters
There’s a Dark Horse lurking in the Kimbrel trade scene………I think it’s the Cubs swooping in at the deadline to grab Ross and Kimbrel for Baez (or Castro), a high level OF prospect (like McKinney or Almora), and a Top Prospect SP (like Edwards or Johnson)……with a low-level prospect filling out the card. Padres get their SS of the future, a young bat almost ready to compete, and a MLB ready prospect.

maybe the braves can take a flier on this Kimbrel

Overplaying Your Hand is the sequel to How to Destroy a Franchise In Thirty Days
Part of the AJ Preller trilogy
petcopadre
How do you figure? He hasn’t destroyed our team. He improved it! Ownership gave him their credit card and has told him they’ll increase his spending limit next year. Preller just kept the valuable pieces intact. Hate much?
justinept
and AJ Preller continues to be the butt of EVERY baseball joke. Good for him.
petcopadre
In my opinion, the Pads don’t need to make any trades. Give Barmes more playing time at short; he’s serviceable for the remainder of the year. Gyorko seems to be the weak spot offensively in the infield. Our pitching is coming around. We’ll re-load in the off season.
Injediwetrust
Agreed. Plus Sheilds Gyorko and Kimbrel should be able to make it through waivers. It would have been nice to get needed pieces but I guess AJ wasn’t getting what he wanted. Locally the emphasis was to give the club a vote of confidence and let it play out. Well they have just received it.
clutchcutch22
What a crazy deadline! All talk and mostly no action. Hoping the Buccos make an August trade.

So much talk but no bites. Guess SD thinks still in it
petcopadre
No, he probably doesn’t believe we’re still in it. He is smart enough to know that he doesn’t have to give away valuable parts for a less than equal return. Our ownership said they are going to increase payroll next year and keeping our pitching and core players is a smart move. Maybe Texans don’t get that? huh gal?
petcopadre
I’m ok with the Pads not making a move. We’re not going to compete this year but next year may be different. The core players we’ve acquired in the off season are going to be around for a few years (except perhaps JUp) but our future still looks bright. A shortstop and second baseman would have been nice but Barmes is doing pretty well and Gyorko is providing good defense for us. I wish his bat would pick up. It seems Preller shot for the stars and came up short. That’s ok. We’re ok.

Here’s my “I told you so” post originally in response to the Tyson Ross/Red Sox post…and I do think the Padres did the right thing standing pat given the market. If you weren’t dealing with Toronto or KC, you weren’t getting that good of a return.
phillyphanatics • 7 hours ago
The Padres will not get as much for their guys as they think – they are underperforming as a group, which is why Preller wants to change course, but with that underperformance comes discounted return.
I think that’s why they’ve consummated nothing yet – other than Upton, everyone else is under contract and they may choose to stand pat more than anyone on here thinks, and give it another shot next year.
Ask Marlins fans (if there even are any left) how it feels to follow a team that keep zigging and zagging every 5 months with a new strategy…
