In today’s column, Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe backed Commissioner Rob Manfred’s optimism about possibly expanding. The last time baseball expanded was in 1998 with the additions of the Rays and D’Backs and Cafardo feels that MLB is due. Manfred recently acknowledged there’s been interest from a few cities, including Montreal (former home of the Expos), Charlotte, and Portland. Cafardo goes on to list other potential spots for expansion franchises, including Vancouver, Las Vegas, Nashville, northern New Jersey, and Brooklyn. Of course, with those last two, there are obvious territorial issues to consider. Here’s more from today’s column..
- If third baseman David Wright doesn’t look like himself when he comes back or if he doesn’t come back at all in 2015, the Mets will give some thoughts to acquiring a pair of hitters. One of those players, Cafardo writes, would likely be a shortstop. There’s currently a feeling in the organization that the Mets will make a move for a hitter in the coming days with pitcher Jon Niese being the outgoing asset.
- There is more and more talk of Yasiel Puig losing popularity with his Dodgers teammates, a major league source tells Cafardo. Puig was once viewed an untouchable player because of his talent, but the new regime does not feel that way at this time. Cafardo wonders aloud if they would move the slugger for a pitcher and pondered him as a match in a Cole Hamels deal with the Phillies.
- There’s “a buzz in the ownership/management community” that chairman Tom Werner could be more involved in the Red Sox’s day-to-day operations, with president and CEO Larry Lucchino being less involved. Werner’s pace-of-play ideas have worked out well so far and he is being viewed as a more influential figure both in Boston and throughout the game. There have been rumblings of Lucchino losing power in Boston for some time now.
- Former Padres skipper Bud Black has a great relationship with owner Arte Moreno and manager Mike Scioscia and Cafardo feels that talk of him becoming the Angels’ GM bears watching.
- Meanwhile, Angels assistant GM Matt Klentak, he writes, may get strong consideration from both the Angels and the Phillies. He worked for Andy MacPhail in baseball’s Labor Relations Department, so he has an in with Philly. MLBTR wrote that Klentak was a strong GM candidate all the way back in 2011.

Braves could trade a starting pitcher for Puig.
scissormetimbers
Miller
BravesNomad
I would send Julio in a heart beat for Puig. Let the kids finish out the season and go after a starter in FA. Julio might pitch better in that larger park and the Braves get a power RF, while sliding Nick to LF and leaving Maybin in CF
Carlos760
Julio isn’t even as good as puig talent wise. They would have to include miller or someone pretty good.
willi
Braves don’t want a malcontent / cancer in their Clubhouse, They Just got rid Upton for same reason and he’s a more Proven MLB Player than this Guy!
bruinsfan94 2
They were rebuilding. Thats why they traded Upton.
Ray Ray
So the Mets’ though is to trade Wright if he doesn’t look good or doesn’t come back this year? I wonder if they are aware that other teams are able to see that as well and will probably not give up a lot for him. If they want to trade him, rebuilding his value should be the first order.
rct
You’re right, and I highly doubt that this is actually what the Mets are thinking. It makes no sense. This just seems to be Cafardo thinking out loud (and poorly). Wright is not going to be back before the trade deadline, and even if he were, there’s there’s nowhere near enough time to figure out if he ‘doesn’t look like himself’ enough to trade him.
But then also: if he doesn’t look like himself, who on earth would trade for him, much less give up *two* good hitters for him? What a weird story.
stl_cards16 2
Wright would clear waivers and be able to be traded in August. Still, that seems very very unlikely.
rct
Yeah, I actually just read the story, and it doesn’t suggest trading Wright at all. It just says that they should add two hitters if Wright doesn’t look like himself. Which still makes no sense because the trade deadline will be long gone before Wright even plays this season.
Edit: looks like Zach has edited the post above to reflect this.
willi
We all Pray for David , But the Guy is Damaged Goods , Mets would be lucky to get 125 Games a Year from Him. Probably sell him on some kind of contingent deal that Phillies Gave Chase Utey! Then Give one of Young Guns ( Harvey ) to Reds for Frazier !
dsindle17
Cueto for Puig, straight up
Carlos760
The only they would trade puig is for syndergard or someone of that kind of talent. The dodgers can get hamels with de leon, lee ect. Without giving up urias or seager.
willi
Not going to Happen, One A Plus Prospect at least , New President is not the Fool that Rin tommorrow was and is !
Carlos760
In your opinion what can the dodgers get for puig ? It seems like you’re selling low on puig.
Draven Moss
He is talking about a Hamels trade. If I were you, I wouldn’t look into a lot of what he says. He is very hard to understand and a lot of what he says doesn’t make much sense.
Matt Galvin
Orlando,Monterrey,Mexico,Hawaii,New Orleans,P.Rico,San Jose,Indiana,OKC,San Antonio should also be on list for MLB team.
HubcapDiamondStarHalo
I lived in Orlando for a long, long time. They won’t support a team.
A'sfaninUK
Hawaii, Mexico & PR seem like a logistical disaster for traveling. I’d say only San Jose makes the most sense, they have over a million people and is the 3rd biggest city in California, behind LA & SD. SJ has more people than SF even – although SF has a large temporary population being a tourist destination.
jbroks86
Well assuming we’ll see expansion its highly unlikely it will be just one team. Which makes Montreal the other likely destination and they already have the careholder stadium till they can build a new one.
willi
Montreal and Mexico City , both are Large Metro Area’s and have History of Baseball.
theo2016
Indianapolis would make a lot of sense
The Oregonian
The last thing the league needs is another team in Florida. Move the Rays to Montreal, the A’s to San Jose (territorial rights, I know), and don’t do expansion yet, there’s too much talent dilution as it is.
raef715
expansion? we’re talking about expansion? just stupid. Just move Tampa to a city that will support a team.
Al Wasser
Cafardo claims that Portland is “clamoring” for major league baseball. Maybe he means Portland, Maine. But Portland, Oregon, has no stadium, and, unfortunately, little interest in baseball.
A'sfaninUK
Agreed, been there and there is just no basis for more pro sports teams – they barely care about the Blazers as is. Its just not a sports town, and they like it like that. Austin, TX is the same way.
BlueSkyLA
Once again Cafardo is way out of his depth reporting on a West Coast team. First, if the Dodgers’ front office really was becoming disenchanted with Puig, who believes they would actually allow any word about those feelings to escape to the media? Second, if they traded Puig, how would they replace his RH bat in the lineup?
Carlos760
People seem to think they’ll trade him for any player. It’s not like he’s that bad he has a good obp. And he has a great contract he ain’t making that much for his production.
BlueSkyLA
Personally I am not into production-per-dollar calculations. I wonder only about how Puig’s production could be replaced in the lineup and especially if it makes sense to field an entirely left-handed outfield and heart of the order. If we’ve learned anything about the new FO it is to not rule out any move, but they are still going to be looking to solve baseball problems without creating new ones.
Carlos760
Maybe if they sign eddy julio trading puig could be a possibility. Even though he would be a year or two away. But trading puig for hamels seems like a move the FO won’t do. and for a right handed bat they should get olivera in a few weeks.
BlueSkyLA
Olivera doesn’t solve the RHB problem since he plays only positions currently populated by righties. A team in first place doesn’t trade to maybe become better in a year or two
Carlos760
Crawford is still good, but he gets injured too much. I rather get a pitcher than to have puig. A syndergard or miller. Pitching beats hitting in the postseason everytime.
Matt St.
If this was true my Phillies would have won 2 or 3 World Series instead of just the 1 they did.
mrshyguy99
dodgers dont really have solid option like they did when they traded kemp. they can just platoon people since they would still have Guerrero, ethier, crawford and scott van sklye. or they can see what Scott Schebler can do. either way they dont really have a great option to replace puig
BlueSkyLA
My point exactly. None of those options are better than Puig in RF and in the middle of the lineup. Granted we are talking about landing a top rotation arm, but if the price is creating a new problem, then the team is just treading water.
rmullig2
If they swapped Puig for Hamels in the off season then they could sign Justin Uptom to take his place.
Justin Case
Well Puig sure is trying his best to contradict your argument
willi
It’s not that Guy, The Dudes a Cancer in clubhouse!
Ray Ray
My top two choices for expansion would be Charlotte (AL) and San Antonio (NL). Charlotte in the AL could give the Rays a geographical rival and the Braves a natural interleague geographic rival. San Antonio in the NL could give Texas fans a chance to see NL baseball again and also give either the Rangers and/or Astros a natural rival as well.
I would then set up 4 4-team divisions: North, East, Central, West and eliminate constant interleague play altogether. You could have one week in the middle of the year and make it interleague week. A home and home 3 game series (total of 6 games) between natural geographic rivals, Orioles/Nats, Yanks/Mets, Dodgers/Angels, etc. The remaining games would be a somewhat balanced league schedule of 20 games vs. each division rival (60) and 8 games vs. every other team in the league (96). The playoffs would be the division winners ONLY in a 7-7-7 playoff tier.
A'sfaninUK
Texas (and Florida for that matter) need less MLB teams, not more IMO. San Jose, Charlotte, Nashville and Brooklyn/NJ are the best ideas for new teams.
Lance
both DFW and Houston are top ten TV markets. baseball needs franchises in both cities. If a team were put in North San Antonio or New Braunfels, the team could also try and market to Austin and San Marcos, both very booming areas. I suspect the Mets and Yankees would put the pressure on MLB to NOT put a franchise in Brooklyn or Jersey. The A’s need to relocate to San Jose. The Oakland stadium is bad and the city itself is somewhat poor. San Jose is flush with money. Charlotte seems logical—located between DC & Atlanta.
Matt St.
The problem with San Jose is the ungrateful Giants. The A’s allowed them to move into their territory when the Giants were thinking about moving and now won’t do the same for the A’s.
Jorge Soler Powered
Where exactly are you going to put a Major League Stadium at? Even the Double A team has to play out in the ghetto side of town nobody wants to go anywhere near.
A'sfaninUK
San Jose, California has the most people and money of any non-MLB city, yet only have an A-ball team. Their one pro sports team, the Sharks, has a rabid fan base – the people of SJ have proven they can support pro sports teams. If the A’s aren’t allowed to move there and are being forced to stay in Oakland (also a burgeoning market due to mass migration to SF by tech people), so why not start a 3rd team there? SJ, while part of the “bay area” is not connected by BART and is 50 miles from SF, so it’s not like they would be stealing any casual fans.
jackiemays
If they really want a team, I think San Jose fanbase should boycott the Giants.
The Oregonian
I think you’re forgetting about the Earthquakes as another pro franchise in San Jose. But while I agree San Jose needs a team, the whole reason the A’s can’t move there is because the Giants have territorial rights over the city, so starting a new team there isn’t an option. The league needs to find some way to move the A’s there eventually.
Vandals Took The Handles
The Giants have rights to the San Jose market.
If they won’t let the A’s move down there, why will they let an expansion team?
dylanp5030
As a Phillies fan, I would absolutely love getting Puig for Hamels, but I just don’t see LA doing that.
willi
Young Phillies don’t need a Dude with an Attitude to spoil their Attitude, If you can’t can’t get along with Mr Vanilla in Hollwood, you an’t going to made on East Coast , Keep thinking PAP’s same type guy !
Matt St.
There is also the possibility that getting traded would be a wakeup call for him. Doesn’t matter anyway Cole is pitching like someone who doesn’t want to get traded right now.
raef715
my 9 year old would love getting Puig here in Philly, but i think you are the only Phils fan over the age of 9 who would be digging that deal. but yes, I’m sure Puig would be busting it every night on a last place team.
mrshyguy99
it might be a little early to give up on puig even if the dodgers could use pitching. it was easy to dump kemp because of joc. but dodgers dont have that kind of bat to replace puig if traded. unless they want to trust ethier and crawford full time. or other options are put Guerrero in LF full time with ethier in RF or bring up Scott Schebler. either way i think the dodgers could be better off with puig.
willi
Mets are desperate, Trade Young Gun ( Arm ) for him!
jackiemays
I don’t think MLB should expand. The franchises are already pretty much dilluted in talent. If a city really wants a team, it should try to force a relocation.
mrshyguy99
if dodgers really want pitching so bad, why dont they try a pitcher who proving that he should be given a look. sooner or later they need to give zach lee a shot. dude not getting any younger. if we can give no control magill a shot dodgers can give lee a shot
chicothekid
I still don’t understand why the Doyers think they need a rotation with 4 aces in it. Grienke and Kershaw aren’t enough? You need Hamels and Cueto too? Their offense is just fine. You don’t NEED that many aces in a rotation, even if you do want it. Go get some back end rotation guys and they won’t deplete your farm system either. There’s plenty of them out there, there always are, and you can even pick your poison in terms of cash and prospects. Just stop setting your sights so high, or you’ll end up with nothing. This isn’t rocket science.
willi
Time for Major League Baseball to expand to it’s Base of Players ( Latin America ) Mexico or even Cuba! In 20 Years 2/3rds of all player will come from Spanish speaking countries , and could grow with Young Fan Base.
bruinsfan94 2
Cuba is a communist country still so I really cant see how that would work logistically . Toronto and any other city in Canada will work because America/Canada are very similar countries. I don’t think anybody would want a team in Mexico. Its very dangerous with all the cartels, and kidnapping is a big money maker for them.
chicothekid
That’s a scary thought you propose there. Kidnapping as a business… MLB players in Mexico on a regular basis. What could go wrong?
BoldyMinnesota
The majority of people in those countries don’t have the money to buy 60$ tickets every game
flyerzfan12
Does either team accept any of these deals?
Cole Hamels for Jose De Leon, Grant Holmes, and Alex Verdugo
Cole Hamels for Brett Phillips, Michael Feliz/Josh Hader, and Jacob Nottingham
flyerzfan12
Scratch that. After watching his last start and his performance so far today, I shall alter the offers to:
Cole Hamels for Jimmy Rollins
Cole Hamels for Chad Qualls
raef715
hey, it was hot out. im starting to think Cole tanks on purpose when he’s close to being traded- like his wife doesnt want to move and talks him into bad performaances…. but anyway, a Dodger offer like that is more reasonable, though has Vergudo shown that he can hit yet?
flyerzfan12
I was just joking with that comment to show how too many fans overreact to a few bad starts. I’m a Phillies fan.
It was brutally hot out today and he definitely seems to struggle on these kind of days.
He’s hitting .287/.316/.387 as a 19 year old in single A. I don’t know much about him but I figured the Phillies would want the next best hitter in the Dodgers system since they can’t get Seager. I’m not sure if that’s still Verdugo or not.
max l
Unlike the Cubs & Pirates who have basically a 0% chance to win the division because the Cards at that far in front it doesn’t make much sense to trade a someone like a Polanco, Bell, Russell or Baez for a 1 game playoff. HOWEVER, the Mets have a great chance to win the East with all the Nats injuries and broken bridge from the starters to Storen. When the Nats get Rendon, Werth, Span back in the next 2-4 weeks, hopefully they start to play better, but this is still a team that struggles against good pitchers, has a struggling middle relief corps, and has a black hole at SS and catcher. I wouldn’t trade any of the big 4 for Upton, but with how bad the Padres have been this year, maybe Preller would take a package centered around Rafael Montero. Alderson should be fired on the spot if he doesn’t even sk.
chicothekid
I’m sure that Alderson is doing his due diligence, but he knows as well as anybody, that Montero is injured, has been since April, doesn’t have a solid timetable for a return yet, and therefore has almost no trade value.
chicothekid
What am I missing here? Puig hit the league by a storm and was the latest sensation. We all know about his antics though and that IS an issue. If he’s on your team, it’s part of the package. Now he can’t hit HR’s anymore, and the Dodgers have suddenly become willing to trade him. They still want your firstborn, second born and left nut, but they WILL trade him.
I get it. He IS a good player with a nice contract, but he’s got a LOT of baggage too, and you don’t know if the power is coming back or not, and what you aren’t paying for in $$$, you ARE paying for in trade. Am I the only one who sees this?
