It’s been almost one year since the trade that sent Tommy Milone from the A’s to the Twins and the deal has suited the hurler well, Joe Stiglich of CSNBayArea.com writes. Through eleven starts this season with Minnesota, Milone owns a 2.84 ERA with 6.1 K/9 and 3.0 BB/9. Milone didn’t demand a trade from Oakland, but he did politely request one.
“It wasn’t like a ‘Here, trade me type thing,’” Milone said. “Obviously it wasn’t something that was supposed to be (public). It’s just one of those things that if they felt there wasn’t a spot open up here, then I’d like to see if there’s an opportunity elsewhere. And I guess it presented itself with Sam Fuld being available. It’s kind of bittersweet to leave after a few years of being here, leaving some of the guys and the coaching staff. But there was an opportunity.”
Here’s more from the AL..
- The Tigers are among the teams that have inquired on Rockies reliever John Axford, Jon Morosi of FOX Sports tweets. However, at this point, it’s far from a certainty that the Tigers will be buyers. The Tigers are 45-46 after today’s loss against the Orioles. Here’s more from the American League..
- The Red Sox, as expected, were on hand for Cole Hamels’ Sunday start and Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com (on Twitter) hears that there was a high-ranking scout there to watch the Phillies ace. Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports (on Twitter) noted that it might be hard to gauge Hamels as the Marlins are missing Giancarlo Stanton, Dee Gordon, and Michael Morse. Even with Miami at less than 100% strength, Hamels didn’t have a great showing, allowing five runs on eight hits in three innings of work.
- A scout at today’s game told Crasnick (on Twitter) that Hamels “looked hot..and not very interested in being out there.” Of course, that’s somewhat understandable to those of us in the Northeast today.
- Manager John Gibbons told reporters that Aaron Sanchez will pitch in relief when he returns to the Blue Jays later this week, Brendan Kennedy of the Toronto Star tweets. One might speculate that Sanchez being slotted in the bullpen might be a sign that Toronto intends on acquiring a starter between now and the deadline. Sanchez will make one relief appearance in Triple-A before joining the Blue Jays’ bullpen.

Hamels better start getting interested….because he’s not going anywhere………
dylanp5030
Because of his last two starts or because they won’t get the prospects?
scann
Because the Phillies front office demands are crazy……..
Matt McCarron 3
Per report, the Phillies asking price have dropped significantly since McPhail took over, other than that, I missed every other time where their demands have been ‘crazy.’
Matt McCarron 3
Anyone who reads a top into 2 bad starts from a guy whos consistently been a top 15 pitcher for the last 5 years or so is overreacting.
He might not get moved for many reasons, but these two starts aren’t one of those reasons.
tuna411
How about 4 of hamels last 7 have been pretty awful. And philly was/is asking for a lot considering the acquiring team STILL has to pay $125,000,000. Under market contract ? Maybe, but that is still a lot of cheese to pay in addition to several high ranked prospects.
Philly should hurry up and trade while the guy’s arm is still attached (or risk this going the cliff lee way)…
Matt McCarron 3
Maybe hes in a bit of a funk, but that still isn’t going to change his trade value.
Hes only owed Roughly 82.5M guaranteed, not including the vesting option. I’d call that under market, considering Hamels would top 180M if he was a FA in 4 months.
Lee was 5 years older than Hamels. You could make the argument that the A’s should trade Sonny Gray before his arm falls off.
stl_cards16 2
$180MM? Not a chance. His contract is definitely a bit under market value, but there would be zero chance he gets $180MM as a free agent this winter.
Matt McCarron 3
Earlier this season, Buster Olney suggested he could top 200M on a FA market in this day and age.
stl_cards16 2
No way. The actual value of Scherzer’s contract is below $180MM. Price, Greinke, Cueto would all out-earn Hamels as free agents, they’re not all getting over $180MM.
thecoffinnail
Buster Olney is a fool.. No way Hamels would top $200m.. He has never gotten higher than a 6th place vote for a Cy Young.. He has never led the league in innings, ERA, FIP, or SO.. He is a very good pitcher but he is not a Scherzer, Greinke, Price, Lee, Kershaw, or Hernandez.. He would get a contract similar to Lester if he was to hit the open market this season..
Joe McMahon
The only way Hamels would get $180M would be if he was given an 7-8 year deal. Per year, he’s not making much less than he’d make on the open market. Teams aren’t going to give multiple top prospects to save $3-4M a year.
thecoffinnail
Sonny Gray and Cole Hamels are as different as night and day.. Lee had 2100 mlb innings on his arm before he started falling apart.. By the end of this season Hamels should break 2000 innings himself.. He will be 32 next year and will by all likelihood be coming out of his prime.. Yes, he is currently under market value but not by much.. Felix Hernadez is only making $1m more this season than Hamels and imo is the superior pitcher.. Its not like Hamels is pitching on a contract like Chris Sale.. Yes, Hamels would command a contract similar to Lester if he was to hit the market this off season.. But he is not.. He chose to sign his extension for market rate in 2012 for 7/$159m.. Which is not far behind what Greinke signed for in 2012 6/$147m.. I have grown tired of people claiming that Hamels is worth an org’s top 2 prospects because his contract is below market rate.. After 2016 Hamels will be the same age as Shields was when he hit free agency and will have MORE innings on his arm than Shields did.. Seeing as how nobody thought Shields was deserving of $24 million a season because his arm had so many innings on it and that he was going to be 33 I would say that Hamels is going to be OVER market value in the final years of his contract..
gwell55
Because of his last two starts plus 2 in April, 1 in May, and 2 in June all totaling 5 earned runs or more it would seem to me … he should of been traded prior to this year. Earlier now he might get one lower tier of the top 50 plus one somewhere in the 80-100 range and a lottery maybe not now tomorrow though.
thecoffinnail
A few bad starts will not hurt his value.. He should get something similar to what Tampa got for Shields a few years ago.. Granted Hamels is a bit better than Shields was then but Shields was pitching on a very team friendly deal..
Ray Ray
The Tigers don’t necessarily have to be “buyers” to pick up Axford. He still has another year of team control after 2015. They could pick him up to see if he has a place in the 2016 bullpen.
seamaholic 2
Well, considering that he’d be their best reliever — by far — in 2015, I’d say that’s a pretty good chance. Jays should be all over Ax. He’s an Ontario guy iirc.
scissormetimbers
I was in a wedding party with his sister, that chick had spider arms!!!

Terrible !
No Big League Choo For Yu
The fact that RAJ still had a job is laughable. He should have been fired at least two years ago and yet he is still around and the Phillies are still awful on the field and struggling to build up the farm.
dylanp5030
Phillies actually have a decent farm and they’ve done a pretty good job the last couple years drafting and developing.
Matt St.
My understanding is they have a lot of depth but not a lot of star power other then J.P. Crawford.
dylanp5030
Not many teams are loaded with 4-5 stars in their system. Nola may not be a star, but should be a solid 2/3. Kilome is another guy in the system that could rocket up the charts in next year. He’s actually probably their pitcher with the most upside.
sacrifice
Sox should go after Latos
Ray Ray
I think they have enough mediocre #3/4 starters.
scissormetimbers
4/5 starters
thecoffinnail
I am hoping he was referring to the White Sox..
Draven Moss
Are you talking about the Red Sox? I assume so. If they target Latos I will be livid. It is pretty clear to me that they have enough guys to plug in the back of their rotation and what they truly need is an ace.
Stonehands
Boston should not be doing anything at the moment. Give it another week to 10 days and gauge their chances off of that. If their chances aren’t good, the Sox would be better off dealing Miley or Buchholz in the offseason, slotting E-Rod, Porcello, and whichever back end SP isn’t traded in the bottom half of the rotation, go out and trade for a no. 2 and sign an ace. 2 TOR arms are needed for this rotation to be above average. Lester and Lackey were it, and now they are gone. Best case scenario would be to trade for a Strasburg or Sonny Gray, and go sign Samardzija in the offseason
thecoffinnail
The rumor mill says that Cashman has been wanting Samardzija since last year.. I could see the Sox and Yankees getting in a bidding war and overpaying him.. He is a solid #2 and doesn’t have many miles on his arm compared to other pitchers his age.. The problem is that the Sox already gave a #2 contract to Porcello and giving Samradzija ace money would not be in their best interest.. They need a bonafide top 15 pitcher and that is not Samardzija.. Price, Cueto, or Greinke should be their targets this off season..
cscd1111
Cole Hamel’s might be tired as we are of this fiasco, that said. His last two outings have to had impact on his value, maybe this situation carries over to seasons end?
Matt McCarron 3
I really doubt 2 outings effect on his value. If you take the 2 of them out, he has a 3.02 ERA on the year, which isn’t exactly terrible. He got lit up today, but it was his first start in 8 days, and it also was over 102 degrees today in Philadelphia, to the point where Miguel Rojas was removed from the game due to heat issues.
theo2016
Its hot everywhere this week. Lame excuse…
Matt McCarron 3
Doesn’t really matter if it was lame. Bottom line is that 2 bad starts doesn’t change Hamels’ trade value.
theo2016
A season of them do. You cant sell him as an ace when he isnt pitching like one. This is the highest walk rate of his career since he was a rookie.
Matt St.
He has had issues in the past where he has trouble staying hydrated on days like today.
tuna411
and if you leave his entire season of starts IN, his era is now 4.00.
Matt McCarron 3
3.91 isn’t 4.00, just saying.
Teams know what they are getting, and don’t let a few bad starts cloud their judgement. If might change their valuation of Hamels a tad bit, but not from a Jeff Samardzija return into a few B level prospects.
tuna411
When you are in the 3.90’s, four is really the number to use. And every news article suggests hamels won’t accept a trade unless the option is picked up. You are just trying to cloud the perception of a cheap pitcher…which hamels is not. And now, he is not even pitching well.
Phillies asking for too much in return.
Phillies asking for the other team to pay too much of the contract.
Phillies missing the boat now that the market is growing…
yourfacedude
How do you actually know the Phillies are asking too much? There hasn’t been a single report of what the Phils have actually asked. All the reports saying the Phils are asking too much are sourced by rival execs who have a rested interest in making the public think Amaro is asking too much to pressure the Phils into taking their garbage prospects. They know everyone takes those reports hook, line, and sinker because Amaro’s credibility is shot. But 1) Amaro has actually done a decent job the last 2-3 seasons making the best of a terrible situation (his fault they are in obviously) and 2) he’s not really calling the shots right now.
thecoffinnail
Glad I am not the only one that sees that Cole Hamels might be a bit under market value this season but will be OVER market value for the next couple of years..
Dock_Elvis
Hot? Oh Texas should be all over Hamels…things cool down to 97 for game time
jtt11 2
Texas has a dry heat. It’s a lot different than 102 in Philadelphia with east coast humidity. With the humidity, you don’t sweat so your body can’t release the heat. It’s brutal. 75 degrees can feel like 90. Hell, I turned town a free round of golf yesterday bc of the heat.
Marvin Berry
Texas is not dry.
Dock_Elvis
I grew up on the plains…its not dry heat…granted the farther east picks up humidity… But Texas unless you are talking west Texas can be scorching hot. My in-laws in Western Kansas has 105° with 80% humidity last week. It’ll sit at 100-115 for weeks on end…no shade… A 30-60 wind that feels like a hair dryer.
Vandals Took The Handles
Bad timing on the Milone story. A’s ran him out of the game in 2.2 innings for 7 runs – 5 earned,
I’ve had my suspicions about many people writing here actually following and watching games. Ought to. They’re a lot of fun.
Steve Adams
Yes, none of us actually watch baseball. Caught us.
Marvin Berry
Good job DMac (VTTH). Start insulting everyone here too. See how that works out for you over time.
Joe McMahon
You know the rumor mill is quiet when the big news of the day is that Hamels “looks hot”. “Next on ESPN, we head to Toronto to see how cold Josh Donaldson looks”.
jackiemays
I see a good chance that Hamels will be sent for a package with Puig and De Leon before the deadline.
Matt St.
As a Phillies phan I would take it. Don’t think the Dodgers go for it though.
stl_cards16 2
Are you in the Tommy Phan club?
jackiemays
Or maybe a Phillie phanatic (ba dum tass).
jackiemays
Just kidding, Matt. 😉

I agree, But Puig troubles me with Me first attitude !
theo2016
Puig alone is overpay. Puig makes less and is an everyday player thats on the upside of his career not the downside
A'sfaninUK
Funnily enough the A’s manhandled Milone today…
thecoffinnail
It was kind of strange that the A’s traded Milone for Fuld a player who they had designated only a few months prior to trading for him.. Granted Milone is not much more than a #4/5 pitcher but he still had value.. To trade him for a player that the A’s already had a few months prior is ironic and not one of Beane’s better moves..
A'sfaninUK
Fuld was very terrible with Oakland the first time around then was hitting very well with the Twins when he was re-acquired, and Milone definitely did ask to be traded so Beane filled a need in a speedy/d-first OF. In terms of Beane’s good/bad moves its barely on the radar for either.
Hank Murphy
That John Gibbons can walk and talk at the same time boggles the mind. He has to be the stupidest person running a mlb team ever. Sanchez has been one of their best starters. But no, lets keep Hutchinson who is a guaranteed loss in every road start in the rotation instead. Let’s keep Dickey who is a coin flip on whether he is good or bad in the rotation. Oh, and let’s keep running Collabello in lf where he is an embarrassment and lets keep Reyes at SS where he commits numerous errors every game instead of moving him to LF and putting a GG caliber guy like Goins at SS.
The Blue Jays don’t need to make a single trade, they need a manager who is above the Forrest Gump line on the IQ scale.
go_jays_go
Sanchez’s FIP is in the 5.00 range and he’s the best starter?
Hank Murphy
Ever take a look at Dickey’s stats? Or Hutchinson’s? Sanchez is better than both. Sanchez’s last 7 starts before going on the DL.
