The Reds are listening on flamethrowing closer Aroldis Chapman, an All-Star in each of the last four seasons. The 27-year-old is under team control through 2016. The latest:
- A source tells Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle that the Astros are more likely to make a deal with the Reds than the Yankees (Twitter link).
- The Diamondbacks say their talks with the Reds for Chapman are now completely dead, tweets Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
- It looks like the Diamondbacks are no longer in on Chapman, tweets MLB.com’s Steve Gilbert.
Earlier Updates
- Arizona’s offer for Chapman includes pitching prospect Braden Shipley and one or two more of their top ten, tweets Nightengale.
- Nightengale says the Reds’ price tag on Chapman is high, but five teams are involved, three seriously. He feels someone will meet the Reds’ demands.
- The Reds now have stronger offers for Chapman than the one made by the Diamondbacks, tweets Bob Nightengale of USA Today, and Arizona is considered a long shot to acquire him. Jon Heyman of CBS Sports notes that while the Yankees have checked in, that’s not likely to happen either. The Astros are another club that has been linked to Chapman, tweets Heyman.  Their interest goes to the ownership level, he adds.

What it sounds like is that teams are tired of talking to Preller and have decided to have similar talks with a less delusional GM…

Beginning to sound very much like the Reds are going to overshoot the mark on evaluating the best possible return for Chapman and wind up not moving him at all.
slasher016
He’s not a free agent at years end, they don’t have to move him. The can move him all offseason or next year.
kingjenrry
This is when they’d get the most for him.
redsfanman
Chapman for some hitters!
nleininger
Jockety driving up the price by playing several teams against each other. It either works and he gets whats he wants, or it blows up in his face and he gets half of it next year at the deadline.

Chapman + Phillips for Judge/Mateo + filler.
vmmercan 2
You’re not getting two of the Yankees’ top five prospects including one who is MLB ready for a luxury closer and an overpaid and aging 2B. Sorry.
Stonehands
He is saying those 2 for 1 of Judge/Mateo and a couple lotto tickets….seems fair to me
vmmercan 2
My apologies, you’re right. Would do Mateo and filler for that. Absolutely not on Judge.
JD.
I feel AA is gonna grab him in the end. With him in the fold for next year as well as the hitters they’ve acquired, it might make it easier to land that big name free agent pitcher in the off season or maybe even allow them to convince Price to sign long term.

What do the Jays have left to give? Last report was that the asking price was 3 top prospects.

Pompey, Alford and Pentecost are all good position player prospects. I think the Reds would likely ask for Stroman + Pompey which wouldn’t happen though.

I would hate to see the Diamondbacks over pay for essentially 1 year of valuable service to them. Chapman is the best closer in baseball, but the RP marker is still volatile, and you can get crafty and find cheaper alternatives to close.
redsfanman
After acquiring three potential starters in the Cueto deal to add to the Reds’ existing surplus of young starting pitching, Braden Shipley seems kinda repetitive at this point. Pass.
Other teams, like the Nationals and Astros, look like better fits.

Even though the Diamondback are dumb for even thinking about trading for Chapman a team cannot turn down a deal like that. “Surplus of young pitching” is nonsense, you make that deal 10 out of 10 times. Then you can use that “surplus” and flip it over for more pressing needs.

Indeed. Chapman’s velocity alone is something you need to have in your bullpen. Sure he might not be the most consistent of consistent relievers, but getting him should be getting a treasure long buried.
Sometimes it’s necessary to risk the farm. At times, many top prospects don’t pan out as expected. So it’s nothing to be afraid of if you’re going to dive in the deep end with the trades.
redsFAN86
Take all the pitching they can get They can use them to flip for offense in the offseason
ffkapono
If they can get 3 top 10 Dbacks prospects they should do it. Shipley or Blair and Peter O’Brian a must tho.
mrshyguy99
looks like reds are going full rebuild mode. im surprise the dbacks are in talks for him, i guess they are willing to give up what the reds want
thetornado16
Stros look like they’re all in. Why not pull the trigger, Luhnow?
