As Alex Speier of the Boston Globe writes, agent Scott Boras recently addressed the progress of client Xander Bogaerts, who struggled in his first full big league season but enters the 2015 All-Star break hitting .304/.338/.411. As Speier notes, Bogaerts is currently on pace to hit free agency entering his age-27 season — a rare occurrence for any player. Boras noted that rarity, making sure to point out that fellow client Bryce Harper will have an early taste of free agency, but denied that he discourages his clients from signing long-term deals before free agency. Boras maintains that he’s “absolutely” open to long-term deals for clients. Said Boras: “With our clients, we give them a lot of information. I always tell teams, I don’t know of any players we have that haven’t signed a deal that they felt was a value deal for them.” For his part, Bogaerts said that he loves playing in Boston and hopes to remain there, although clearly he’s quite a ways from having to face the possibility of playing elsewhere.
More from the AL East…
- Rick Porcello spoke with WEEI.com’s John Tomase about his disastrous first half and the importance of trying to take away some positives from the season’s first few months. Porcello, who will spend the All-Star break decompressing at his family’s home in southern Vermont, maintained that he was not feeling the pressures that can come along with signing a large contract. “They brought me over here because of what I’ve done and who I am,” said Porcello. “That’s the most important thing. There’s no added pressure on myself. I am who I am. I can’t try and be somebody else or do something I’m not capable of doing. So that hasn’t factored into it at all.”
- The Blue Jays are “regularly being asked for Marcus Stroman” as a return in trades for pitching, reports Shi Davidi of Sportsnet. Despite the fact that Stroman won’t contribute to the team in 2015 after tearing his ACL this spring, the Blue Jays won’t be trading him, Davidi writes. Looking at the trade history of GM Alex Anthopoulos, Davidi notes that it’s probably more likely to see the Blue Jays acquire someone with some team control remaining. He lists the Padres as a speculative trade partner, noting that both Andrew Cashner and Tyson Ross would fit that mold. Acquiring a starter or two would allow the Blue Jays to transfer Aaron Sanchez to the bullpen to help fix the team’s relief woes, though trade possibilities exist there, too. Jonathan Papelbon said at yesterday’s All-Star festivities that he considered the Jays a “good fit” and would waive his no-trade clause to go there.
- As Alykhan K. Ravjiani of Postmedia first tweeted, the Blue Jays have promoted top prospect Jeff Hoffman to Double-A. Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet notes that the promotion comes at a time when the Jays are on the hunt for pitching, and Hoffman is likely to be asked about frequently, perhaps along with prospects Daniel Norris and Matt Boyd. Hoffman was a candidate to be selected first overall in the 2014 draft but fell to the Blue Jays with the ninth pick after undergoing Tommy John surgery. Now healthy, Hoffman has a 3.21 ERA through his first 11 starts with Class-A Advanced, where he’s averaged 6.1 walks against 2.4 walks per nine innings.
- Though man Orioles fans believe the team’s diminished run production to be a reason for the club’s struggles, MASNsports.com’s Steve Melewski opines that questionable starting pitching is the greater culprit. While the decisions to let Nelson Cruz and Nick Markakis leave via free agency has had a negative impact on the offense, poor performances from Chris Tillman, Bud Norris and more recently, Miguel Gonzalez, have left Baltimore with a 4.20 ERA from its rotation.

Rick, start feeling the pressure, because not feeling the pressure is clearly not working for you.
Brixton
Daniel Norris, Max Pentecost, Miguel Castro and Danny Valencia for Cole Hamels, Jon Papelbon and 35M
(Gives you Papelbon free, and Hamels at roughly 4.5 years, 24M AAV, 92M overall)
Draven Moss
I wouldn’t do that if I were the Phillies. If they are eating 35MM, they are gonna have to get a better package than that IMO.
ashley
Norris is cost controlled and the Jays don’t need Hamels. He has a horrible line against the AL and has given up 14 homers in 65 innings with 45 runs given up in the same period. That is worse than anything Norris or Castro could contribute and they are in the minors. Pentecost is the catcher that replaces Martin at the end of his contract, so why would the Jays give up anything for Hamels and Papalbon. Both are expensive and there are many cheaper options.
scissormetimbers
That’s what it will take stop
Overvaluing the kids
Dock_Elvis
Yeah, that’s maybe too much cash. Norris is OK…Pentecost might be massive…but that’s alot.
stymeedone
To make a trade like that with the Blue Jays, that may not be enough cash to make it work in their budget. Its been reported they only have about 8mm to work with.
Bronx Bombers
Then don’t expect much, especially a guy like Hamels. $8million wont get you much today on the trade market especially if a team doesn’t want to give up much.
BeenThereDoneIt
This year. Next year, they have Beuhrle, Dicky and Romero coming off the books. That’s over 30million.
JD.
Hamels has already said he’s not going to Toronto.
BeenThereDoneIt
No he hasn’t. In fact, he has said he is open to any team.
scissormetimbers
Hammels isn’t coming toTO but I think it’s a fair deal for cueto chapman
alex navarrette
If you exchange Castro for Hoffman, I think that’s a very likely trade proposal.
Draven Moss
That is my thought as well. Realistically, the deal proposed above would probably only have around 10MM eaten (at least IMO). Adding Hoffman to the mix instead of Castro would be Philly buying a better prospect for an extra 25MM.
scissormetimbers
That’s a big package, you’d never get both of Hoffman and Norris
georgebell 2
Can’t see how they can part with Stroman since they need him and then some for the rotation next year.
Draven Moss
I hope the Red Sox jump in on Tyson Ross if he is available. I think he is a perfect target for any AL East team. Lots of strikeouts and ground balls. He has been really good too.
Math&Baseball
Only if they get a package revolving around Henry Owens. Whoever the Padres trade they need to get close to or ready MLB pitching to replace what they lose.
Henry Owens also adds a lefty to the rotation which Erlin hasn’t provided and they haven’t had since Luebke went down.
Ross and Cashner both need to bring back pitching in deals.
bruinsfan94 2
I think that trade would be fair and good as long as there are no other major prospects in it ( Guys like Coyle, Brentz, Cecchini, I could see going)
Draven Moss
I’m fine with trading Henry Owens and a couple smaller pieces for Tyson Ross. The Red Sox have a lot of lefties in the rotation, so I consider him a moveable piece in any deal. Maybe they could work out a package that would land them Tyson Ross and Joaquin Benoit? The Red Sox need bullpen help too.

Boras is “absolutely” open to a client signing an extension at a projected future market value.
stymeedone
sure he is! Lets list all of those clients that have, in fact, done so.
Did I miss any?

Elvis Andrus is the only one that comes to mind when he signed in 2013.
User 4245925809
Or worse, as in that terrible player side deal to Andrus where Texas assumed all risk if Andrus got no better or Andrus never learned to hit and Andrus could opt out after 4y if he did…
Think Boston may have one advantage, however slight other than Bogaerts liking Boston is his brother Jair wanting to represent him. It came out last year from both parties in an article. Boston signed both brothers originally as amateur players together also. Might matter, might not? Boras gets in his way and Jair slides right in?
Dock_Elvis
Players have moved away from Boras before, so that’s not a surprise. The new baseball economy has hurt Boras a bit. He doesn’t have the usual cast of teams to deal with….and everyone is valuing controllable players. Even the large market teams aren’t always there for him to cash in on. That and the fact that he comes off as ridiculous with his own metrics. He reminds me a bit of a lawyer who chases ambulances. He gets his money… But I think he’s not acted in some players best interest before
User 4245925809
“But I think he’s not acted in some players best interest before”
That’s an understatement if I’ve ever heard one before.
Dock_Elvis
If the player is a star then he earns the massive free agent contract by merit. If not then Boras finagles and ends up costing his player cred by overstating his value. Either way, Boras is a leach.

While I’m aware I’ll probably be called delusional for saying this: I wouldn’t write off Porcello just yet and not just because frankly, we can’t. There are usually a few players that need a year to adjust to their new team. Or to put in in a way Red Sox fans might remember, Beckett’s first year with the Sox was agonizing and people were calling the trade the worst of all time… until the next year when they conveniently forgot what they said. My point being, let the kid find his feet in Boston.
bobbleheadguru
My main issue as a Tigers fan (who grew up in Boston, and follows both teams) is that Porcello never was a #1 or even #2 pitcher. He is a serviceable #3. A good #4.
Just because he is young, does not mean that he suddenly he is worth $20MM+/year. He is what he is in his SEVENTH year.
There are a 100+ starting pitchers that have more upside them him over the next 4+ years. Perhaps 8-10 pitchers will actually be paid more than him over those years, however. (Not even Scherzer will).
Dock_Elvis
Off topic…but I just have to say the All Star Game caps are atrocious. Let the guys rep their teams MLB….not everything has to to be a marketable alternate.
willi
I Agree !
Dock_Elvis
I’m not sure what’s scarier..the caps or people that would she’ll out $30 for one

Stroman is gonna be a stud, that’s gonna anchor the rotation starting next year.
go_jays_go
“[Hoffman] has averaged 6.1 walks against 2.4 walks per nine innings”.
6.1 strikeouts against 2.4 walks
Baseballholic
Is all this trade for a starter, two starters only hype, out to pacify Jays fans for the remainder of this season, and then in the off-season, we will hear, again, there, there, now, next year will be better.
Baseballholic
I think it is unconscionable of AA, the Jays GM, not to trade for even one starter, and to move Sanchez back into the bullpen, when he does recover from his injury.
Baseball Realism
Trade using what chips ? EE is pretty much the only ML player with some value and where you already have a replacement. The only other options would be the young arms in the minors.
Keep in mind that Burhle will probably not be back next year, Dickey is a question mark for next year and if Hutch continues his woes, the Jays will be hurting for starters next year.
Selling the farm now for a rental player may not be the option
scissormetimbers
Your speculating that these kids will even succeed in the majors next year. Your wasting the best offense of the decade by throwing too many games away. It makes a lot more sense to win this year
Baseballholic
Thx for the reply. Yes, I assumed EE would have traded before now.
Buehrle will be gone next year; the team will likely re-assign Dickey, for Dickey is pitching well: it is that he is usually matched against a super-arm, which even the Jays’ offence can not hit. Hutch is an enigma, maybe even onto himself But that is the plight… and which young arms, other than Stroman, will be ready, next year?
I feel that the time is this year to trade for a reliable starter for this year, whom the Jays will sign for next year as well. That is one hole.
Navarro with a prospect should be able to net the team a good bullpen arm, preferably an experienced guy….remember how Darren Oliver grounded that bullpen his last year with this team?
And prospects, including Pompey, if that is what it takes, even coupled with Colabello or Valencia should be able to hook an outfielder such as Gomez. Pillar needs help out there, before he gets hurts.
The prospects ( and not all the prospects )and players for such trades and transactions are available .. make a run at the post season, for the Fabulous Fans’ Sake.. even Joe bauts asked Don Cherry to beg management to get pitching help for his team. And I am sure everyone remembers last year’s revolt.
Baseballholic
When a ship is floundering, the captain is supposed to be the one who accepts responsibility for the floundering. Stabilize this Jays team, managers, and if you are unable to do so, say you can not, stop the con, walk away like men, and let others who can, do,
Baseball Realism
Inquiries for Stroman should be sent to a recording that simply says “No”.
Looking past Stroman’s abilities, the Jays may be hurting for starters next year with any experience. Bhurle will probably not be back next year (unless a 1 year gets signed at a reduced cost), Dickey is a question mark based on age, ability and his price tag, Hutch is having troubles that I hate to say is starting to remind me of Romero.
Trading young studs for a rental player this year will only make next year hurt more. Unless the young guys return a ML player with some control, it would be hard to justify a trade.
I would be dangling EE on the open market. Friendly contract and we have players who can replace him already in the ML. He is the Jays only true available trade chip with ML value.
scissormetimbers
We’re obviously going to have to acquire an arm via free agency next year. Might as well trade Norris and others if he can be used to acquire a SP and bullpen piece to win now
RichW
You can dangle him high and/or low but he goes nowhere unless he gives his permission. Not likely to happen.
tigerfan1968
Give me an idea of what you think you would get for EE. By the way that would significantly weaken the offense.
Donnie B
Hamels will be traded, and someone will overpay for him..
Astros & Rangers want him… and will overpay to keep the other team from getting him… Blue Jays and Yankees want him too, and once again… one or the other will overpay so that the other doesn’t get him. Because the fact is, if any of those 4 teams get Hamels, they will be favorites to win the Division this year and for years to come..
I think Papelbon goes to the Blue Jays, with the Phillies paying $10-12 million for a better prospect.
tigerfan1968
Whats wrong with Kazmir? Less money more value.
tigerfan1968
The Jays have a lot of great prospects. They need to be very careful who they give up. They are not a big market team and with the Canadian dollar now worth around 77 cents US they are even a smaller market team. AA has done a lot of excellent moves (Donaldson,Travis). At this point they do need a pitcher like Cueto desperately or Kazmir. Hamels is too expensive, ditto Papellbon. Make Cinci and Oakland a good offer and if one accepts than fine. What other team has any kind of pitching in the minors that the Jays have. If it takes a Sanchez then fine. Toronto can not afford and may not need an expensive starter in the years ahead with the number of young arms they have.
