Here’s the latest from the National League East:
- The Mets are “ramping up [their] efforts” to trade both Dillon Gee and Jon Niese, Andy Martino of the New York Daily News reports. New York indicated today that it’s likely the club will back off of its six-man rotation and return to a traditional schedule. With Noah Syndergaard now fairly firmly installed at the big league level, and Steven Matz not far behind him, it makes sense that the club would be looking to see what it can get out of Gee and Niese. Both have good track records of steady production and are controllable in the future at affordable rates, but unfortunately neither has matched their historical results thus far in 2015.
- As they weigh rotation moves, which rate as good problems, the Mets are dealing with more troubling issues in the infield. The team has placed infielder Daniel Murphy on the 15-day DL with a strained quad, as Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com was among those to report. It’s not believed to be a serious injury, according to manager Terry Collins, but the club can ill afford any significant absence from Murphy. New York is already missing third baseman David Wright for an indeterminate stretch, while highly-regarded youngster Dilson Herrera is also working back from the DL (as well as backstop Travis d’Arnaud). An infield addition of some kind already seemed a plausible target for the Mets, though of course this injury is unlikely to have an impact unless it turns into something worse than expected.
- While the Marlins continue to wait and see how to proceed at the deadline, the club is looking to build out its pen to give it the best chance at entering the contention picture, MLB.com’s Joe Frisaro reports. Miami has discussed David Carpenter, who was recently designated by the Yankees and is about as intriguing an arm as you can hope to find at a reasonable price tag at this time of year.
- Nationals righty Doug Fister is set to make his first rehab appearance this weekend at Triple-A, James Wagner of the Washington Post tweets. It would appear as if things have gone about as well as could be hoped since he hit the DL with forearm tightness after his start on May 14. He’ll be a welcome addition to the Nats rotation, assuming he can return after a few minor league starts, and can begin attempting to rebuild his free agent value.
Niese has a decent track record though a poor start to this year. But I’m not seeing it with gee at best he’s pitched like a ok 5 over his career. Probably worse especially since 2014.
hes averaged over six innings per start in every year hes pitched in the majors lol
wasn’t talking innings, wasn’t talking number 5 starter
then what were you saying?
I was talking number 5 starter, sorry my brain is uh idk
then what were you saying?
Honestly if they can get a decent bench player out of one of them I’d be fine with it. Since one of them leave, they gain a bench piece which they need as well as Matz.
Someone will give a AAAA type with an all-or-nothing bat for Gee. Niese I’m not so sure. But honestly I don’t know if that helps the Mets much other than clearing a spot for better pitchers.
Moving Niese will 1) bring back at least a bench player 2) allow Matz to come up 3) Allow the Mets to take on some more money in their payroll.
Yeah that’s true. Might as well send Gee down to AAA just in case, but Niese they have to trade.
I don’t think it’s the best idea to have someone being paid $5 mil in AAA.
its called a sunk cost, no sense losing games just because someone is paid more. bullpen prospect or light hitting utility guy is all they will get in trade though
Ala Ollie Perez 2010
Unfortunately the Mets have left themselves w. few options. With their crap ownership…shedding payroll may be most of what they get if they can move Niese and Gee. They need to clear room for Matz..enough w. flotsom clogging up the rotation.
I *still* think both guys are more than serviceable #4/#5 guys on almost any staff in the league…but their last 3-4 starts collectively have hurt their respective values.
Would the Cubs be even moderately interested in Gee or Niese? Don’t really see them giving up too much for them but they might be able to help plug the 5th spot in the rotation and put Wada or Hendricks in the pen to give some stability there.
no, think cueto or kazmir if anything
Mets are not willing to trade young talent for these type players.
What? He asked if the cubs wanted the neise or gee
or someone with multiple years of control thats a top 3 in a rotation
Answer is No!! Teams that want to trade with the Mets want Matz or Syndergaard!
Teams also want Mike Trout and A. Russell, but that doesn’t mean those teams would consider trading their young stars either.
Put a Trade Package of Murphy and Niese to the Yankees !
No way Murphy is a DH with no power who can’t run the bases and is a butcher in the field. Nova and Warren are better than Niece at this point.
Some quick trades that I am sure no one will like.. Niese, Gee and Granderson to the Dodgers for Either.. The Dodgers like to throw money around and they could stick Gee in AAA where he belongs.. They could then flip Granderson or keep him for insurance because who knows when Crawford will be back..
Then the Yankees send Carpenter and Wilson to Miami for Cishek.. If anybody can fix that kid it will be Mel Stottlemyre.. This will send decent bullpen arms to Miami and give them some payroll flexibility as well give Cashman that righty he is looking for.. Although, I am pretty sure he isn’t looking for a project, but it makes sense in my world.. Imagine a bullpen of 2012-14 Cishek with Betances, and Miller.. That would be downright unfair..
Feel free to tear me apart now..
where would eithier play? Gee is better than half of the dodgers rotation. Granderson is better than Eithier. Justin Wilson is better than Cishek. I don’t even think I’d trade Carpenter for Cishek at this point.
So, you would rather have Gee pitch over Anderson and Bolsinger? Have you seen how they have been pitching? Or, were you referring to the other half of the Dodgers rotation in Kershaw and Grienke?Granderson is in no way better than Either.. Cishek is having some mechanical problems.. He will figure it out.. Homerism is a disease that needs to be eradicated..
So the fact that you made excuses for every player mentioned in this trade isn’t homerism? ok. The Dodgers nearly traded for Gee, and Granderson has already outpreformed Ethier’s preformance last year in 60 games.
I think Cashman would look to a pitcher like Clippard, Cishek is in the minors with all kinds of problems.
David Wright is starting to look like a bad contract along with d’Arnaud. I cant’ see them getting anything for Gee and Niece at this point selling low, they couldn’t get rid of them in the off season. The Mets appear to have too many position player problem right now to stay in the hunt. The only way for them to get better offensively is to trade either Matz or Syndergaard which they will not do.
How is d’Arnaud a bad contract? He hasn’t even hit arbitration yet.
He’s injury prone, which is worse than anything because you are not contributing to the team at all. Seems like Alderson is putting all hope of offense on Wright and d’ Arnaud’s return, who knows when that will be!
Injury prone by getting hit by a pitch in his wrist?
His two biggest injuries were flukey bone breaks. That’s not injury-prone. Also, as another poster said, d’Arnaud is pre-Arb so he’s not a bad contract.
As far as Wright, they’re apparently insured up to 75% on his contract in case of injury, so it’s not as bad as it seems.
The only thing keeping the Mets in the race is the Phillies, Marlins, and Braves. Playing these teams 18 times gives them a good chance at the wild card since these are 3 of the worst teams in baseball. Check Fangraphs!
It’s not like the AL East is a juggernaut this year. Good teams are SUPPOSED to beat up on crap teams.
It certainly helps, but it’s definitely not the only thing. Mets starting pitchers are 6th in ERA, 5th in xFIP, and lead the Majors in innings pitched by a starting rotation. They also have a pretty solid bullpen.
Just get anything for Niese and Gee at this point. Should’ve traded them during this past offseason.
They tried. Nobody wanted them. It’s hard to blame them.
