Ryne Sandberg’s sudden resignation raises questions about who, exactly, is charge of the Phillies, David Murphy of the Daily News writes. Team president Pat Gillick said “I can’t really comment on that” yesterday in response to a question about who would be in charge of hiring the next Phillies manager. The team will reportedly hire Andy MacPhail for a front-office position, but it’s unclear whether that’s Gillick’s idea or ownership’s, and even if it’s the latter, it’s not clear who speaks for the ownership. Here’s more from the East divisions.
- The Marlins’ loss of Giancarlo Stanton to a broken hamate bone has led to speculation that the team could become sellers at the trade deadline, but the team is unlikely to make wholesale changes, writes Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald. In the past few months, team president David Samson has repeatedly spoken about the organization’s need for “stability,” so while it’s possible the Marlins could trade a few older players (possibly including Dan Haren or Mat Latos), they won’t make dramatic moves, as they did in 2012 when they shipped Hanley Ramirez to the Dodgers.
- The Red Sox are mistaken in their apparent belief that they’re contenders, Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald writes. They’re currently nine games below .500 and eight games out of first in the AL East. They do have plenty of interesting young players in Mookie Betts, Xander Bogaerts, Blake Swihart and Eduardo Rodriguez, but the Red Sox’ recent choice to place Justin Masterson, rather than young lefty Brian Johnson, in their rotation suggests that they’re not yet focused on the future, as Lauber believes they should be.

Please the Red Sox aren’t delusional, but they also can’t concede the race in June. They still need people to buy tickets and merch and show up for the games, regardless of how out of it they are.

I’ll be fair and say that the Red Sox are one of the few teams that are success driven as far as ticket and merchandise sales. I’m not saying BoSox fans have the stomach for a gutted rebuild the way the Cubs did it….but they can sustain some deadline selling. The Red Sox can always come back next season as contenders.
The roster chemistry was questionable….Sandoval was catered to in that Giants franchise…but he’s had a highly questionable work ethic and some slips in social decorum before.
I’m guessing in 2016 we see the thinned down committed Pablo….as well as a front office that’s decided not to run a string of questionable 3rd starters out there. They’ll bring an ace in.
mookiessnarl
Only if it’s through a trade. I can’t see them spending 170-200 million on Cueto, Zimmerman or Price.
thecoffinnail
Cherington pretty much has to bring in an ace next year whether its through free agency or in a trade.. Between the expiring contracts of Victorino, Napoli, and Masterson they will have close to $35 million available.. He made those big investments this year with Sandoval, Ramirez, and Porcello. If he doesn’t get one of the big arms and turn things around next year he could be on the hot seat.. They should have a decent protected pick next year so they can chase whoever they want.. Hopefully, it will be Price because he seems to be the best bet at staying healthy through the majority of his big payday..
Dock_Elvis
I’m just not sure why it’s beyond their capacity to bring in one of those 170-200m pitchers. It’s a very limited market for teams that can afford to do that…so they are a leg up. If Boston can’t do it…then there’s only really about a handful of teams that can. The Cubs can certainly do it on Price.
I just don’t see the next Red Sox team making a playoff run without one. Right now they’d run Rick Porcello out twice in a series…that’s like shooting themselves in the foot. Sure….almost every signing they made last offseason was a risk…and they’ve all blown up in them
East Coast Bias
What makes you think Panda will be a different person (and player) next season? Is it the odd year even year thing? haha just wondering..
And yeah, they need an ace, and maybe another mid rotation arm as well.
Dock_Elvis
Because that was the m.o. that Sandoval ran with in SF. He’d play well…go lacks and get pudgy…then he’d find the motivation and come back and rake…rinse and repeat.
Willy
Im sorry but you are incorrect about Sandoval. He is catered in Boston more than any other place and he has a great work ethic. Everyone always says, including his manager and media people like ex-Sox Lou Merloni how strong of a work ethic and how hard Pablo competes. He’s having an off year defensively but if you look at his past stats that has happened to him proviously. He’s also getting used to every AL park infield, by next year he will be fine like hes always been. And Pablo isnt alone in his defensive struggles, look around the league, Headley for the Yanks was a great fielder last year… and he suddenly stinks this year.

Masterson just needed his outright release, only Boston won’t give it to him yet and admit his 88mphFB is totally inefficient.
It was really funny last week. They had Bill Lee as a guest on one of the AAA games during one of Masterson’s games and he was all over masterson.. Saying thing’s like “88mph high cheese won’t get anyone out with the assortment this guy has”. Still the same honest and down to earth guy he has been for 50 years. MLB needs this guy. get rid of Harold Reynolds, who is without a clue and bring onboard Bill Lee, who may offend half the league but will give honest evaluations of the players.
Dock_Elvis
Yeah…but no one gets a job in baseball by being honest. Bill Veeck had to own teams to get away with it….and even then the league fought him.

Funny you mention one of my favorite all time owners! You ever read his book? Packed full of interesting funnies he pulled off during his 2 illustrious career as owner of MLB franchises, along with various other MiLB teams.
How he did all this, as a WW2 here and losing his leg during the conflict is a really great story.
Dock_Elvis
I own a pair of Veeck books. Veeck as in Wreck, and the one written by Paul Dickson. They are hilarious to read in comparison. The world Veeck lived in was something special. It’s funny…in many ways he created the game we see today…but there’s no way in he** he’d be welcome now..or even actually able to own a team. Gone are the days of ownership as the family business.

Hasn’t their fanbase already bought the majority, if not all, the tickets for the season? Their money is pretty well set except for concessions. They need to show the fans that they are correcting things. Is putting Masterson in the rotation, when he will be gone next year, correcting things?
Willy
They can still accomplish this and let Johnson pitch over Masterson. In fact they would “Sell” more of everything by promoting one of their own even for 1 start then they would by allowing a rental pitcher who has stunk to start once again.

Aces do not grow on trees… they made a huge mistake bringing in both Hanley and Pablo. Who is there to keep them in check? Ortiz? Laughable.
Problem is none of their young arms have made a splash since Lester.
User 4245925809
It’s not so much that they haven’t made a splash since lester, since they actually (and the fans of the team believe, as well as the team itself) have 1-2 within the organization now in Rodriquez and possibilities in Kopech, Owens, Ball, Buttrey, Espinoza. The organisation is not short on high end arms with front end possibilities. Some have done it over several seasons (Johnson, Owens, Rodriquez), Some are having breakout years (Buttrey, Ball), Some are in 1st year of professional sports and are teenagers, yet are proving dominant against much older competition (Kopech, Espinoza). The potential for #1-#3 types are there. Think they should be able to get at least a couple this time.
Dock_Elvis
All true…but its logical to think they also might deal one to Philly to bring in Cole Hamels.
stymeedone
I don’t think its logical to think Hamels will end up a Red Sox. The two sides don’t agree, and the “touchables” for Boston are either having poor starts to their current season, or are too far away from the majors to entice Philly in their rebuild. Whatever prospects Boston was offering earlier, have lost some of their luster, and Philly would want more now.

NL East is the weakest division in baseball!
Dock_Elvis
I think Boston is still logical….I didn’t say probable…logical in the sense that Colorado is illogical. I’m not gonna be shocked if that’s where he goes….there, LA, Texas, Houston,
