Historically, the Yankees have failed to draft well, but they’re hoping things will be different this year now that they have their highest pick (No. 16) since 1993, Joel Sherman of the New York Post writes. Since 2009, MVPs Clayton Kershaw, Mike Trout, Andrew McCutchen, Buster Posey, Ryan Braun, Justin Verlander, Joey Votto, Josh Hamilton, and Joe Mauer were all drafted before it was the Yankees’ turn to pick. Meanwhile, Kershaw, Corey Kluber, Max Scherzer, R.A. Dickey, David Price, Justin Verlander, Roy Halladay, Tim Lincecum, and Zack Greinke are the drafted players to have won the Cy Young in the last six years and of that group, all were taken before the Yankees’ top pick except for Kluber, who was a fourth-round pick in 2007. Here’s more out of the AL and NL East..
- The consensus among Mets officials is that pitcher Steven Matz will be on the big league roster at some point before the All-Star break, according to Mike Puma of the New York Post. GM Sandy Alderson conceded that it’s “very possible” Matz already would be in a Mets uniform if it weren’t for a logjam in the rotation and he admitted that there’s “probably not” anything the Mets still have to see from him in the minors. Meanwhile, the Mets continue to dangle Jon Niese and Dillon Gee, but interest has been limited, according to an club source.
- Justin Masterson will make a third rehab start in the minors on Wednesday which will allow him to work his way back from shoulder tendinitis. The start for Triple-A Pawtucket will also buy the Red Sox time to make a decision on his future, as Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal writes. By rule, Boston can keep him on his rehab assignment for 30 days, which would lapse on June 29th. Masterson was signed to a one-year, $9.5MM deal in December to be a starter, but he might only have a relief role waiting for him on the other side of his rehab.
- Scouts have been eyeing Red Sox left-hander Tommy Layne, Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe writes. “With lefty relievers, get them while they’re effective. It can be fleeting. Look at [Craig] Breslow. He was a huge part of that 2013 bullpen and now he’s a mopup guy. Layne really comes right at you and battles you,” an AL scout told Cafardo. If Boston doesn’t start winning soon, Cafardo writes that the left-hander will be a sought-after commodity.

If the Yankees wanted Dickey they could have picked him up at anytime before his break out with the Mets.
Matt Plamondon
salty?
Sky14
No, why would I be?
dwolfson
You may want to re-check your dates there. “Since 2009” and yet all those listed MVPs were in earlier drafts.
Bruinsfan94
It meant that those players have won MVPS since 2009.

Breslow was never really effective vs lefties tho, at least no more than vs RH hitters. Layne has that nasty slider that starts off coming right at LH hitters, then ends up way out of the batters box. He really is hard to hit it seems and his numbers have shown that, though RH hitters see him well with his delivery and stuff.

Matz to the Cubs for Castro….Mets eat all of contract…..
Brixton G.
The Mets would never do that..
rich 3
Castro with the -0.5 WAR? That sounds like a great idea!!!
scann
Buying low now….could look good in the future…..
Brixton G.
Giving up Matz isn’t “buying low.” Its an overpay for Castro, even when Castro isn’t terrible.
rich 3
It could also look worse. Castro is a terrible SS, he will be at a different defensive spot soon enough. A 9.2 WAR in 800 games, he is beyond overrated. Him for Matz is laughable.
Mary Jane
oh that is not worth it Castro isn’t that good.

Mets rotation is going to be sick for next few years!
slider32
Pitching is outlier!
wright1970
yes, but that sick rotation will be sick to their stomachs on a lot of nights because of this ridiculously horrible offense!!
paqza
d’Arnaud and Herrera are back!

Anyone know what player, or what kind of player, the Yankees are targeting for the upcoming draft?
scann
Kaprelian,Ponce,Nikorak at 16…..Betts,Aiken,Allard at 30…..
scann
Donnie Everett or Cornelius Randolph….are also possible at 30….
Sleeper
He probably won’t be there, but there’s also a strong hope Whitley is there at 16, at least from the fan base. Either way, should be interesting to see what route they go,there should be some quality choices still around that pick.
Sleeper
Really depends on who’s still available at the point they pick. There’s more of a small list of certain players, both hitting and pitching, that they’re been rumored to be interested in than a particular type of player
jjs91
based on all the mocks, i would have to say no.
slider32
This draft appears to be below average on the top end, I think the Yanks are looking at pitching in their first too pick and maybe SS. Kaprelian, Nikorak, Aiken, and Allard all fit the bill. At 30 you could be looking at Rickie Martin SS, or Justin Hooper!
Brixton G.
From what Ive heard, its a very deep draft in the “10-20 overall” types, with very few top 5 overall pick-type picks, hence why every mock draft is completely different. If you look at BA’s 5 mock drafts, each one has a different 1:1 pick, and you see a guy like Stephenson going 1:1 if one of them, then 10th overall in the next.
DrRamblings
This draft is good for anyone who stockpiled picks, as there may not be a “can’t miss” at the top, but there are plenty of value farther down.
oh Hal
“Interest has been limited” translates as nobody wants to pay what Alderson wants.
Out of place Met fan
Its a timing thing, everyone will wait to see if Cueto and Kazmir prove to healthy or not. Add Shark, Hamels, and Leake the list of available pitchers. No one wants to prematurely give up a B prospect for Niese to only watch Hamels go to a division rival 2 weeks later
JacobyWanKenobi
I don’t get the point of listing MVP and CY Young winners, it seems like a convoluted way of saying that good players get drafted early. The Yankees haven’t drafted early in a long time because they’ve won, a lot.
MB923
This. And the last time they even had a Top 10 pick was way back in 1992. They drafted some guy named Derek Jeter.
slider32
Most likely Matz won’t do any better than Gee this year, it’s all about percection!
rich 3
Normally I would agree with you but the Mets have been very patient with their young pitching. Harvey, deGrom, and now Syndergaard came up as finished products. They weren’t rushed at all. Matz is putting up a sub 2 era in the PCL which is nothing short of insane. Dude is really good and would have been in the starting rotation for any other MLB to start the season. Gee is a serviceable back end starter but with what the Mets will be wheeling out in their rotation he is overmatched. These are elite arms they have.
slider32
This was not a knock on Matz, I saw him in the spring and he is good, and he is ripping up AAA. I just don’t see a market for Gee or Niece. The Mets problem is they don’t have good position players like the Nats, Dodgers, and Cards.
rich 3
And three of the good players they have (Wright, Murphy, d’Arnaud) are hurt, that’s their main issue right now. Even guys who are called up to replace these guys (Herrera) are hurt. They have gotten hit by injuries worse than any other team in baseball.
slider32
It’s a crap shoot!
Uriel Alessandro
Are we supposed to feel sorry for the Yankees? They haven’t had a high draft pick in so long because they’ve been winning for a long time and then signing expensive free agents which has taken picks from them.
Vmmercan
Actually, by definition it’s solely been the winning. If they lost picks from signing expensive FAs, it wouldn’t magically give them a top 15 pick had they not done that because they’ve been winning.
willi
The Rockies are desperate for pitchers, why the Mets haven’t put a Trade package of pitchers together for some Rockies Hitters is beyond me. Tulo and Cargo for Matz, Gee and Niese.
DrRamblings
Tulo has not looked All-World this season…which is what it’d take to pry Matz away from the Mets. If they want to talk lesser players for Gee and Niese, I’m sure the Mets would listen.
MattHollidaysForearms
It would not take the best shortstop in baseball to ‘pry’ a 24 year old who’s one TJ deep with no major league experience.
DrRamblings
Previously the best shortstop in baseball before all of the injuries. Now he has the potential to be one of the best…IF he can stay healthy. He is on the back end of his career, unlike the 24yo old who is under control for years to come for peanuts. Also, given the success rate of pitchers coming back from TJ (80%+) and often coming back stronger…yeah, I’d take him with a TJ under his belt.
Bruinsfan94
So the Rockies are trading two stars for one prospect and a couple ok pitchers?
M.Kit
Layne sure looked good in that save situation. Could see more high leverage situations
Ju'Queveland "A'ight" Morris
Niese and Gee- two awful pitchers. A bag of baseballs would be too generous for them.
Mary Jane
Just trade Niese and Gee for whatever, just get rid of them Mets got more value at of them and it is time to drop them like a sack of potatoes.

Poorly written by Zach Links. How is R.A. Dickey winning the CY as a converted knuckleballer picked up off of waivers representative of the Yankees’ draft position problem?
