The Brewers have claimed infielder Hernan Perez off waivers from the Tigers, Milwaukee announced. To clear a roster spot, the club designated utilityman Elian Herrera for assignment.
Perez, 24, has seen very brief playing time at the major league level in each of the last four seasons. In 647 Triple-A plate appearances, he slashed .280/.321/.387 while adding 21 stolen bases. The Venezuelan native has split his time as a professionally evenly between shortstop and second base.
Meanwhile, the 30-year-old Herrera has delivered a career .249/.304/.343 slash line in 470 turns at bat in the majors, all compiled in sporadic action over 2012-15. He is a true utility player, having spent time at all three outfield spots and every infield position left of first base. Herrera has had some success at the plate at the Triple-A level, where he owns a .307/.375/.431 batting line in just over 1,000 plate appearances.

Of course now Perez will now blossom into a .280 hitter and an above average defender.

Well, of course he is. Perez is going from the American league to the inferior National League.

This is likely partially about giving Herrera a chance to hook on elsewhere. He’s a decent utility man.

I am just glad we (Milwaukee) have not made a single move to get more pitching. I always said the problems we have stem solely from our backup infielder(s), not anything else, so dazzlin’ Dougy makes the big move. Just great work by our GM. I am excited to see what Perez and his .061 BA with 11Ks in 33 ABs can bring to our already potent lineup. Who knows, we could go on a streak and finish the season .333!
Craig Jacobson
He’s a 24 year old who hit OK at AAA. Meanwhile, Herrera is 30 and if he has a future, it won’t be in Milwaukee. This is exactly the sort of low-risk move a bad team should be making.

You are right, this is a low-risk move that we should be making, and I am not all that upset by the move. I just find it disconcerting that it is the only recent move. One look at the AAA team in Colorado and the statistics… it is easy to see there is not much in the way of help, especially pitching. My point is that a move like this should be one in a flurry of moves (picking up minor league pitching, 3B, etc.) not a stand-alone move.
Sage
Well, it’s only June 2nd, let’s give Doug some time here. I’m sure there’s plenty of moves coming for us in the next two months. This is just the start.

Sage,we have been waiting since 1982 for a World Series team.Dougie has built a real winning with nothing and I mean nothing on the farm. And we blame it on small market.I blame it on people that don’t know what a prospect is from a light pole.
Ed 11
This man just told it like it is. We had to trade Estrada for PT hitter Lind. Why,because we don’t have a farm system.

Maybe a change in scenery will be good for Perez. Remember how horrible Mark Reynolds was in MKE last year? Now he’s pretty decent in St. Louis, of course.
stymeedone
It is surprising anyone claimed him. Maybe he is better than what he showed in his look sees the last two years. Still, since I see his peak as a utility infielder, and am happy with Romine filling that position for the Tigers, not a big loss. If we can find a usable piece for the bench, maybe just keeping Tyler Collins up, all the better.
BarrelMan
Elian Herrera to the Tigers?
stymeedone
No thanks, we have Josh Wilson 🙁
With Kinsler, Iglesias, Miggy, and Castellanos all playing every day, I don’t understand why they feel they need more than Romine as a utility fielder. They need a LH bat for the bench, an impact bat. Someone that could spell Cespedes, or JD when they face a tough Righty, or could PH late for Iglesias, or McCann, or even Castellanos, when a HR could make a difference. Kelly Johnson, Garrett Jones, Adam Lind, or Geraldo Parra may be possible upgrades (when healthy).

Was Hernan Perez DFA’d? Or was he placed on trade waivers?
theloniouszen
Never DFA’d. Sounds like he was placed on trade waivers, Milwaukee claimed him, and the Tigers let him go. They could have offered to work out a trade.
tesseract
This is shocking to me. The Tigers were somewhat high on Hernan Perez, they should have asked for something in return
Craig Jacobson
I was wondering if there was more to the story from the Detroit side – Perez was a very young player in AAA last year and didn’t seem completely overwhelmed at least. For them to give up on him entirely so quickly seems awfully quick.
tesseract
Perez signed with the Tigers in 2007 I believe and they have always been high on him. This is surprising news that they gave him up for nothing in return. He’s going to be a Major Leaguer for a long time (albeit not a superstar)
theloniouszen
Word is now that they were “sneak him to AAA” waivers
tesseract
Trade waivers are revocable. If a team claimed him they could have worked out a trade. I guess their 25-man roster was full

Just another in a long list of useless guys that they call major leagues. The Brewers under this owner have become a laugh stock of how not to run a MLB franchise.

We wish Perez the very best!
